Wittmann taking nothing for granted
November 19th, 2011
Marco Wittmann has refused to get too carried away with his dominant performance in the Macau Grand Prix qualification race – well aware that the only thing that matters is victory in the main event on Sunday.
The Signature driver led every lap of Saturday’s 10-lap qualifying race, which finished under safety car conditions, to secure pole position for tomorrow’s final.
But although his strong qualifying and race form has left him full of confidence about his chances, he is not taking anything for granted just yet.
“It is always nice to win, and stand on top of a podium, but for sure we will not celebrate much because it is just a qualification race,” said Wittmann. “The race tomorrow is the most important one, and that is the one we want to win.”
Wittmann said the key to his success on Saturday was in building up a one-second cushion over nearest rival Felipe Nasr on the opening lap – after briefly losing the lead on the run to Lisboa.
“It was important to make a good start, and that is what happened – although you never know if you will still be in front at Lisboa,” explained the German.
“Felipe was a bit in front, but I braked later than him and was on a better line on the inside, so I was able to go around first in Lisboa. Then I could push hard and build up a gap of around two seconds, and that was the key of the race I think.”
And after a relatively incident-free race, Wittmann is expecting a tougher battle on Sunday.
“I think for sure tomorrow will be more aggressive,” he said. “It is a race where you have to be. Everyone gets more confident with the track and conditions, but that is not only the others – for me it is the same situation. I will try to win. I want to win, and we will do all our best to do that.”
