Meyers Eyes First Outlaws Title

CONCORD, N.C. — Jason Meyers is so close to his first World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series title he can practically taste it.
All Meyers, the driver of the No. 14 Elite Racing sprint car, has to do is survive three nights at The Dirt Track at Charlotte Motor Speedway and he will become the 2010 series champion.
Easier said than done.
Hot on Meyers’s trail is four-time and defending series champion Donny Schatz, who is only 96 points behind with two points paying events during the World of Outlaws World Finals this weekend.
“Our goal is to go out there and win at least one of the races in Charlotte and put an exclamation point on the season,” said Meyers, who won the opener of the World Finals in 2009 and has three victories at Charlotte in his career. “We have been able to do that the last couple of years and we have always enjoyed racing down there. We have been working hard these two weeks for this. We are going to go hard through the end of the year. That is what got us to this point and that is how we are going to finish it. We are going to go down there and put a show on for the fans and end the season on a high note.”
Schatz, who won at The Dirt Track at Charlotte Motor Speedway earlier this season, is hoping to stun Meyers and claim his fifth-straight series title.
“It’s fun to have a race at the end of the year where you can go and have a good time. You always kind of look forward to the end of the year, but I wish it would keep going,” Schatz said. “We’ve been running fairly well here recently. I’d like to see more races. It’s kind of sad to see it end, but all good things must end.”
Not to be forgotten, 20-time World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series champion Steve Kinser is third, only 100 points behind Meyers as the series travels to the four-tenths-mile dirt oval located across the street from Charlotte Motor Speedway.
“Winning the championship was what we were hoping to do. It’s going to be tough to do that with where we are at,” Kinser said. “I really appreciate the chance Tony and everyone at TSR gave us. Running the Bass Pro Shops colors was really an honor this year. We had some really good nights. Winning right away down in Florida gave all of us a lot of confidence. The Kings Royal win was probably one of the better nights.
“Mathematically, we still have a shot at winning that 21st title this year. Hopefully we can finish out this season with a couple of strong runs,” Kinser said.
The fourth annual World Finals kick off on Thursday with two rounds of time trials, which will set the heat race lineups for the Friday and Saturday portion of the event. Bonus points will be available to the top-five qualifiers in each of those sessions, with it possible for a driver to gain as many as 10 points in the standings through qualifying.
The World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series raced in Charlotte for the first time in 2000 and in 17 A-Feature events at the track, 11 drivers have visited victory lane. The World Finals was first held in 2007, with Meyers and Kinser splitting wins. In 2008 Brooke Tatnell and Schatz visted victory lane, with Joey Saldana and Meyers winning last year.
Joining the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series at The Dirt Track will be the World of Outlaws Late Model Series, which features a tight battle for the series championship between defending champion Josh Richards and 2008 champion Darrell Lanigan.
Also competing Thursday through Saturday will be the Super DIRTcar Series big-block modifieds. Matt Sheppard currently holds a 74-point lead in the series standings over Jimmy Phelps.
