Power, Franchitti Set For Homestead Finale

HOMESTEAD, Fla. — Will Power’s strategy in the Cafes do Brasil Indy 300 at Homestead-Miami Speedway is simple, though not necessarily easy —keep rival Dario Franchitti in his rearview mirrors.
Accomplish the feat for 200 laps and Power will claim his first IZOD IndyCar Series title. Falter and the wily Franchitti will secure his third championship in the past four years.
Power says he is ready for the weekend.
“I think when it comes down to it, comes to the race, I’m very focused on what I want to do and if it comes time to be very aggressive, I will,” Power explained. “If not, I’ll just race my normal race. I’ll be aware of exactly what I have to do on the weekend.”
Franchitti knows he has his work cut out for him to steal the title from Power.
“We know how to get the job done,” he said of his Chip Ganassi Racing team. “The guys at Team Target know how to win it too. We’re not going to go out and change our game plan. We’re going to go out to win the race. We’ve got to make up the points. We’ve got to get a 13 point advantage, which is not going to be easy, but we think we’ve got we’ve got the equipment to do it. We know how to do it. So we’ve been talking about a lot this week about the ins and outs and the championships and the points.”
At this point we just want to get on the track and fight out there.
For the 11th time in the 15-year, 202-race history of the IZOD IndyCar Series — and the fifth season in a row — the driver championship will be decided in the final event.
Through a 16-race duel across three continents, Verizon Team Penske driver Power and Target Chip Ganassi Racing’s Franchitti have been piling up points. Power takes a 12-point advantage into the season finale, which will feature a 27-car field on the 1.5-mile oval.
Last season Franchitti entered the finale trailing his teammate Scott Dixon by five points, but used fuel strategy to win the race and claim his second title by 11 markers.
“It was physically very difficult with no yellows,” Franchitti remembers. “Our strategy, after the halfway point, it wouldn’t have mattered if there were no yellows or not. We were always, from lap 100 on, in a very good position.”
In 2008, Dixon earned his second title by 17 markers over Helio Castroneves. Franchitti, driving for Andretti Green Racing, won the 2007 championship by 13 points over Dixon.
The closest title battle came in 2006 when Sam Hornish, Jr. earned his third title by tiebreaker. He and Dan Wheldon each earned 475 points, but Hornish won four races to Wheldon’s two.
