Loeb keeps lead despite puncture
May 27th, 2012
Sebastien Loeb remains in the Acropolis Rally lead despite having to stop and change a puncture on SS20. The Citroen driver’s advantage over second-placed team-mate Mikko Hirvonen has come down from 2m01s to 40s with two stages to go. Loeb said his big lead convinced him it was better to stop and change the wheel rather than risk further damage driving on a flat.
Zanella targeting title on F2 return
March 27th, 2012
Last season’s Formula 2 runner-up Christopher Zanella has announced that he will return to a series for another shot at the title in 2012. In his first year in F2 after moving up from Formula 3, Zanella took two victories as he finished as champion Mirko Bortolotti’s nearest rival.
Gordon closes, Al-Attiyah retires
January 10th, 2012
Robby Gordon moved to within 5m58s of Dakar Rally leader Stephane Peterhansel by winning Tuesday’s Antofagasta to Iquique stage, but the American’s Hummer team-mate – and 2011 event winner – Nasser Al-Attiyah’s bid for a repeat victory has ended in retirement. Al-Attiyah had remained optimistic that he could pull off a second straight win even when nearly three quarters of an hour behind Peterhansel at the rally’s halfway point, but further issues with his Hummer – today in the form of alternator and engine problems – saw the World Rally Championship regular forced to finally withdraw from the event. Even as one Hummer retired, the team’s chances of victory were boosted as Gordon claimed his first stage win of the 2012 Dakar, beating X-raid Mini driver Peterhansel by 1m38s to reduce the Frenchman’s lead to just under six minutes
Turner and Mucke pull out of decider
November 5th, 2011
The Young Driver Aston Martin team has been forced to withdraw title contenders Stefan Mucke and Darren Turner’s DB9 from the remainder of this weekend’s FIA GT1 World Championship final at San Luis. The car sustained extensive chassis damage when Mucke crashed in Friday’s second practice session. Repairs were judged impossible within the time constraints ahead of this weekend’s championship final.
Gavin says BMWs tough to beat
June 9th, 2011
Works Chevrolet Corvette driver Oliver Gavin believes BMW has an advantage over the rest of the GTE field at Le Mans this year. BMW suffered a torrid 24 Hours in 2010, but the latest version of the M3 has proved quick this season. After yesterday’s first qualifying session, Andy Priaulx’s BMW sits on provisional pole with a time of 3m58.426s, over 0.5s faster than Gianmaria Bruni’s AF Corse Ferrari 458 Italia and one second quicker than the top Michelin-shod Corvette, driven by Gavin, Richard Westbrook and Jan Magnussen
Time correction boosts Hirvonen
May 8th, 2011
Mikko Hirvonen now looks more secure in second place in Italy after the rally organisers corrected a timing error from Saturday and adjusted his results. Ford had been adamant that Hirvonen’s time on the Monte Lerno stage yesterday had been 4.5 seconds quicker than the officially recorded pace.
Jordan confident of race wins in 2011
April 5th, 2011
Andrew Jordan believes he can consistently challenge for overall British Touring Car Championship race wins this year after showing strong pace at the Brands Hatch opener.
Grosjean: GP2 title will be harder
March 24th, 2011
GP2 Asia champion Romain Grosjean believes that his DAMS team will have to work hard if it is to stay out front for the main championship this year. The Renault Formula 1 reserve driver cruised to his second GP2 Asia title at Imola last weekend.
Williams confident it can finish sixth
November 8th, 2010
Williams is confident that it can maintain sixth position in the constructors’ championship, despite only having a single point advantage over Force India with one race left to run in Abu Dhabi. Nico Hulkenberg may have secured the team’s first pole position in 100 races – since Nick Heidfeld qualified fastest in the 2005 European Grand Prix – but it was the rookie German’s eight-placed finish in Brazil that moved Williams ahead of its rival by 69 points to 68.
First 2010 pole for Scheider
August 21st, 2010
Timo Scheider took his first DTM pole position of the season in commanding fashion at Zandvoort on Saturday. The reigning champion’s lap in the Q4 pole shootout was nearly seven tenths of a second clear of Gary Paffett, who will join Scheider on the front row. Paffett lost time when he locked up at the first corner on his hot lap and last year’s winner was unable to claw it back over the rest of the lap
Loeb: Hirvonen would’ve dominated
July 30th, 2010
Former Rally Finland winner Sebastien Loeb said nobody would have had the speed to live with Mikko Hirvonen on this week’s event if the Finn had not crashed off the road this morning. Hirvonen was 4.9 seconds in the lead when he had a massive crash on the Urria stage, but his advantage over Loeb was almost double that after the Frenchman suffered a heavy landing in SS3.
Capello: Audi has closed on Peugeot
September 25th, 2009
Last year’s Petit Le Mans winner Rinaldo Capello is more confident that Audi can maintain its unbroken run of victories at Road Atlanta after he and team-mate Allan McNish made up some ground in this morning’s final free practice session. The Italian admitted yesterday that the R15 TDI had proven to be inconsistent over the peaks and valleys of the Georgia track, losing grip on the crests and bottoming on the dips
