Pirelli: India choice to shape ’12 plans
October 24th, 2011
Pirelli says its distribution of tyre compounds for the Indian Grand Prix could form the basis of its 2012 strategy if it proves successful. The usual practice is for teams to get five sets of the softer of Pirelli’s tyre choices each weekend, and six of the harder – but some of these tend to be unused. For India, the allocation will be the other way around, with six softs and five hards provided.

Paul Hembery: “We’ve opted for a deliberately conservative nomination in selecting the hard tyre alongside the soft, simply because on a brand new circuit you are never quite sure of the exact race conditions you will encounter. But we’ve structured the allocation in such a way that we think the teams will run more on the softer tyres, particularly because we are bringing an extra set of soft compound tyres for Friday. This will help us to make some decisions about our strategy for next year, particularly after we saw the excellent durability of the softer compounds
Pirelli: India to get soft/prime switch
October 7th, 2011
Drivers will have access to six sets of soft tyres during the inaugural Indian Grand Prix after Pirelli announced that it is taking the unusual step of making the yellow-labelled compound the prime selection for the event. Pirelli has defined the tyre compounds it will provide to the teams for the final three races of 2011, with the Italian manufacturer opting to take a cautious approach to the new Buddh circuit later this month. Teams are given 11 sets of tyres per grand prix weekend – normally five softer option sets and six harder primes.
GPDA backs tyre allocation changes
September 7th, 2011
The Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (GPDA) has written to Pirelli saying it backs the tyre manufacturers’ push to change compound allocations next year, in a bid to end unused rubber getting wasted. As reported by AUTOSPORT earlier this week, Pirelli is prepared to ask the FIA to change the allocation regulations for 2012 because it thinks it is ‘nonsense’ that under the current rules drivers are being left with at least one set of unused tyres at the end of a race.
Rossi annoyed by tyre allocation
August 26th, 2011
Valentino Rossi has hit out at Bridgestone over its decision to bring its hardest-specification rear tyre to the Indianapolis Grand Prix this weekend. The Ducati rider said that he had pleaded with the Japanese tyre manufacturer to choose a softer compound for the event as the newly resurfaced infield section of the track was likely to react better to such rubber. “I already talked to Bridgestone in Mugello to modify the allocation for here because the rubber we have on the harder tyre is completely useless,” the seven-time world champion said.

FIM alters engine durability penalties
October 3rd, 2009
MotoGP’s governing body FIM has made the penalty for riders who use more than the allocated number of engines more lenient, shifting the points penalty to the constructors. The regulations now state that a rider who uses more than five engines over the final seven races of the 2009 season will start from the back of the grid for each race where he uses more than his allocation. The previous version of the technical rule book stated in article 2.3.6 that the rider would have ten points deducted from his championship total.

Sebastian Vettel – 2nd: “In P1 it was too dry for the extreme wets and by the end, also for the inters, but it was too wet for the dry tyres too. I think the general problem today for all is that teams are short of wet tyres – whatever you use today has to also count as part of your allocation for the weekend, which is why not many cars were running.

Bridgestone expects Monza surprises
September 8th, 2009
Formula 1 tyre supplier Bridgestone thinks managing the different compounds will be a bigger factor in this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix than it was in Belgium a fortnight ago. Several teams struggled to get the most out of the soft and medium tyres at Spa-Francorchamps, which helped play a role in Kimi Raikkonen and Giancarlo Fisichella enjoying their best results of the season. With the same types of tyres being used at Monza this weekend, Bridgestone’s director of motorsport tyre development Hirohide Hamashima reckons that there is the chance of an equally topsy-turvy result
