Fernando Alonso has tipped Mercedes to be a strong contender for victory in Sunday’s Monaco Grand Prix. The German team has yet to finish higher than third in Formula 1 this year, despite claiming three pole positions, after struggling with tyre management . But the Ferrari driver believes that if Mercedes can take pole position in Monte Carlo, it will be favourite for victory.

Ferrari played down the fact that Fernando Alonso picked up a puncture in the Spanish Grand Prix, saying it never jeopardised his win . It emerged after the Barcelona race that Alonso had a cut tyre when he came in for his fourth and final pitstop on lap 49 of 66.

Kimi Raikkonen said there was no point in fighting Fernando Alonso when the Ferrari star made his crucial pass to win the Spanish Grand Prix . Fernando Alonso says it is too early to get carried away about his chances of victory in the Spanish Grand Prix despite a strong start to the weekend on Friday. Fernando Alonso grabbed the fastest time in a Ferrari one-two as wet weather frustrated the Formula 1 field’s attempts to get an early understanding of the Spanish Grand Prix upgrade packages in opening practice at Barcelona. It was only coming into the final quarter of an hour that slicks were viable, and even then there were sufficient slippery patches to limit the relevance of the laps that drivers managed. But with so many developments to try, teams were less reticent about coming out early than is often the case in wet sessions.

Fernando Alonso could have won the Bahrain Grand Prix but for the DRS failure that forced him to make two unscheduled pit-stops, according to Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali. The Spaniard’s DRS rear wing stuck open while running second on lap seven, forcing him into the pits for emergency repairs. The problem recurred when he returned to the track however, forcing him straight back into the pits.

For the first time this season Fernando Alonso goes into a grand prix weekend as favourite, according to the players of the Castrol EDGE Grand Prix Predictor. The Ferrari driver, who scored his first victory of the year in China last weekend, is currently the man deemed most likely to be the first to score multiple victories in 2013, with 34 per cent of users selecting him compared to 33 per cent choosing world championship leader Sebastian Vettel. The Red Bull driver has been the overwhelming favourite going in to the first three races.

Fernando Alonso gave Ferrari its first victory of the 2013 Formula 1 season as his tactic of starting on soft tyres proved the right one in a strategy-defined Chinese Grand Prix. Kimi Raikkonen and Lewis Hamilton used the same strategy to fill the podium, as Sebastian Vettel’s tactics could only give him fourth place, just inches behind Hamilton in a thrilling finish. Fernando Alonso has laughed off suggestions that Ferrari team-mate Felipe Massa has the upper hand in qualifying now. The Spanish driver has not qualified ahead of the Brazilian since last year’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, and if Massa manages the feat again this weekend in China it would be the first time Alonso has been outqualified five times in a row in Formula 1. Fernando Alonso claims he would have respected a team order to hold position had he been in Sebastian Vettel’s situation in the Malaysian Grand Prix. Red Bull team principal Christian Horner suggested in an interview with Sky Sports News that “if Fernando Alonso or Lewis [Hamilton] were in that position, they would do the same” as Vettel did when he disregarded team instructions and overtook Mark Webber to win at Sepang.
