May 12th, 2013
Aaro Vainio won the 50th GP3 Series race on Sunday morning at Barcelona, the Finn taking the Koiranen GP team’s first victory in the category in its second-ever start. Vainio anticipated the start to perfection from his second row starting spot, leaping from fourth to the lead by Turn 1. Poleman and team-mate Kevin Korjus followed him, ahead of David Fumanelli, Nick Yelloly and Saturday’s winner Tio Ellinas, who jumped up from eighth to fifth in his Marussia car

Frijns takes first GP2 win in thriller
May 11th, 2013
Reigning Formula Renault 3.5 champion Robin Frijns gave Hilmer Motorsport its first-ever GP2 Series victory in the Barcelona feature race, making it the second race in succession that a new-for-2013 team has won. Frijns and his team executed a perfect race strategy, switching from the soft tyres to the hard compound at the first opportunity on lap six. Thanks to a fast stop, this gave him track position over everyone save for poleman, and early leader, Marcus Ericsson of DAMS
Niederhauser fastest as GP3 kicks off
May 10th, 2013
Patric Niederhauser set the fastest time in the 45-minute free practice session for the opening round of the new-look GP3 Series season at Barcelona. Although the second-generation GP3 uses the same chassis as its predecessor, it now features a throaty 3.4-litre AER V6 engine producing 400bhp. Niederhauser, a two-time GP3 race-winner in the old machine, lapped the Circuit de Catalunya in 1m35.044s, almost three and a half seconds quicker than the fastest previous race weekend lap set by Mitch Evans in 2011, whose pole time back then was 1m38.498s
Ericsson leads all-DAMS front row
May 10th, 2013
Marcus Ericsson will start round five of the 2013 GP2 Series at Barcelona from pole position, leading a one-two for reigning champion DAMS ahead of team-mate Stephane Richelmi. Ericsson, who had not scored a point this season until taking the four for pole position – his first-ever in the series – left it late to grab the top spot, having previously led the way for much of the session only for Richelmi to look like he had snatched it late on

Daly’s News
by Conor Daly on April 3rd, 2013
Editor’s note: Lightning can strike any time, any place . . . but you have to be there for it to strike you. Ask iRacer Conor Daly. After an off-season which, among other things, saw him test an IndyCar for AJ Foyt Racing, test a GP2 car for the new Hilmer Motorsports outfit, win the MRF Challenge and prepare himself for a third season of GP3, he found himself on a plane to Malaysia with the somewhat murky prospects of a ride in the GP2 race at the Malaysian Grand Prix. And that was just the start of a whirlwind for Daly as, shortly after writing this blog, he was named to drive one of AJ Foyt Racing’s entries in the 2013 Indianapolis 500. More on that next time.
