Tyre ruling not an issue – Mercedes
May 20th, 2013
Mercedes says there can be no grounds for disappointment over the reduced scope of Pirelli’s Formula 1 tyre revisions, despite having suffered with degradation more than most. As AUTOSPORT revealed last week , Pirelli’s revisions – due to come in to force from the Canadian Grand Prix – will now be minimal after the FIA made it clear any tweaks to the rubber could only be made on safety grounds. The governing body’s stance means that Pirelli will not be allowed to make alterations to the tyre specification aimed primarily at lessening tyre degradation or reducing the number of pit stops.
Ricciardo hopes Toro Rosso slump over
May 15th, 2013
Toro Rosso now understands how to get the best of its car and can be a regular Formula 1 points-scorer again, reckons Daniel Ricciardo. The Italian team had an encouraging Spanish Grand Prix weekend, with both Ricciardo and team-mate Jean-Eric Vergne coming close to Q3, and the Australian taking a point for 10th in the race. Ricciardo had previously made a breakthrough with seventh place in China, only for Toro Rosso to be left baffled when the best it could manage a week later in Bahrain was 16th.
F1 drivers win pitlane fines reprieve
May 14th, 2013
Formula 1 drivers are no longer being fined for pitlane speeding offences, AUTOSPORT can reveal, after the FIA agreed to a change of procedure.
Hamilton sure tyre woes will be solved
May 13th, 2013
Lewis Hamilton says no stone will be left unturned when he visits the Mercedes factory later this week for a brainstorming session to cure the team’s tyre woes. The former world champion has a previously scheduled promotional appearance for a sponsor in Florida first, but he believes the trip to Brackley is now an essential after his disappointing Spanish Grand Prix.
McLaren denies use of team orders
May 13th, 2013
McLaren insists it did not order Sergio Perez to ease off in his Spanish Grand Prix battle against Jenson Button in an attempt to avoid a repeat of their Bahrain GP clash. Just one race after the pair came to blows at Sakhir with an over-aggressive fight for positions , the prospect of another wheel-to-wheel dice was on the cards at Barcelona when Perez closed in on his team-mate in the closing stages. However, a late radio message to the Mexican that told him to focus on conserving his tyres meant he abandoned his chase of Button, and he finished two seconds behind at the chequered flag.
Frijns uncertain of future despite win
May 13th, 2013
Barcelona GP2 feature race winner Robin Frijns admits he could yet be forced to withdraw from the series due to a lack of budget. The Dutchman, left without a drive at the start of 2013 despite winning last year’s Formula Renault 3.5 title, claimed victory and a podium for new squad Hilmer in what was only his second weekend in the series
Spain race quotes: Mercedes
May 12th, 2013
Nico Rosberg – 6th: “I had a very tough race this afternoon. The start was good and I managed my first stint well to keep some of the quicker cars behind me. From there, I had to drive my own race and we began to go backwards as it made no sense to destroy my tyres by trying to stay ahead.
Spain qualifying quotes: Mercedes
May 11th, 2013
Nico Rosberg – 1st: “It’s a great feeling to be on pole again. So far this weekend has been very positive and it’s a pleasure to see that the team is improving and fighting through the problems together.
Pirelli: debris caused di Resta’s issue
May 11th, 2013
Pirelli now suspects that Paul di Resta’s tyre failure in practice for the Spanish Grand Prix was caused by a cut in the rubber. After overnight inspection of the remains of the left rear tyre that gave way on di Resta’s car, Pirelli suspects that the tread overheated after debris caused a small cut in it. The overheating, allied to the force being put through the rubber, caused the tyre to fail as di Resta exited the high-speed final corner at the Circuit de Catalunya
Spain practice quotes: Ferrari
May 10th, 2013
Fernando Alonso – 1st/2nd: “The signs from today are positive, as we were quick in both the morning and afternoon and the car seems to be well balanced on light and heavy fuel loads.
Di Resta failure could prompt changes
May 10th, 2013
Pirelli says it will investigate whether any changes need to be made to its tyre to prevent a repeat of the type of failure that affected Paul di Resta in Friday practice at the Spanish Grand Prix. Di Resta was forced to bring his car to a halt after the tread came away from the left rear tyre during the early stages of a high fuel run in FP2
Webber aims to capitalise on ‘form’ GPs
May 9th, 2013
Mark Webber is confident that the upcoming run of ‘form’ races will allow him to get back into the Formula 1 world championship hunt. The Australian is already 45 points behind standings-leading team-mate Sebastian Vettel after claiming only one podium finish in the opening four races of the season. But Webber has won grands prix at five of the six circuits visited by F1 between now and the August break, with Montreal the only venue he has yet to triumph at.
Mercedes expects boost from tyre tweak
May 9th, 2013
Mercedes duo Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton believe their chances of a good result in the Spanish Grand Prix have been boosted by the change in the hard compound tyre . Although Mercedes struggled in Bahrain with overheating rear tyres, both drivers think that cooler European weather and moving the hard Pirelli’s operating window in line with the medium will help them. “The [new hard] tyre is closer to the operating window of the medium,” explained Rosberg
Alonso: Ferrari can attack in Spain
May 9th, 2013
Fernando Alonso says he arrives at his home grand prix in Spain feeling that he can go on the attack for the first time since he joined Ferrari. The Spaniard has won the Barcelona race just once – in 2006 with Renault – and has been hindered by uncompetitive cars in the three home races he has competed in with Ferrari. This year, however, Alonso feels he has a car that will allow him to change the defensive approach of previous years.
Williams has ‘plan B’ for troubled car
May 9th, 2013
Pastor Maldonado insists that Williams has a ‘plan B’ should the major upgrade package it will trial in Friday practice for the Spanish Grand Prix not perform as expected. Williams has endured a poor start to the 2013 Formula 1 season and has yet to score a point heading into a race that it won last year . But despite being confident that the new parts, which Williams has successfully tested during two days of straightline running at the Idiada facility in Spain since the Bahrain Grand Prix, will work, Maldonado does not see this upgrade as make or break for his campaign
Perez, Button now have ‘more respect’
May 9th, 2013
Sergio Perez says he and McLaren team-mate Jenson Button will respect each other more when they fight for position in the future, following their Bahrain Grand Prix clash. Both drivers were summoned to a meeting with team principal Martin Whitmarsh and sporting director Sam Michael after they made contact during an intense battle at Sakhir
McLaren: fixing correlation top priority
May 8th, 2013
McLaren says its priority is to identify and resolve the correlation issues that led to its poor start to the 2013 Formula 1 season, as it fears the problem could also impact on its preparations for the ’14 rules.
Lotus appoints Chester as Allison exits
May 8th, 2013
Lotus has announced that Nick Chester will become its new technical director, as it confirmed James Allison’s departure. AUTOSPORT revealed earlier on Wednesday morning that Allison had decided to leave the squad, and that Chester would be promoted to fill the vacancy.
Pic: Caterham must focus on itself
May 3rd, 2013
Caterham should waste no time worrying about the gap to the established outfits right now and instead needs to keep its focus on longer term gains, reckons Charles Pic. On the back of an encouraging step forward delivered by updates at the Bahrain Grand Prix, a more extensive development package is set for introduction in Spain next week. Pic was able to outqualify both Marussias at Sakhir for the first time this year, and he has high hopes that a push forward is now being delivered
2013 a fresh start for di Resta
May 2nd, 2013
Paul di Resta says 2013 has felt like a ‘fresh start’ to him, after admitting that the end of last year could not have been any worse. The Force India driver equalled the best result of his career with a fourth-place finish in Bahrain a fortnight ago, having battled for a podium place for much of the race
