Points prove Lotus progress is real
April 29th, 2013
Lotus has emerged from the first four races as Formula 1′s biggest gainer over 2012, and equally confident it can keep up its form for the remainder of the campaign. Kimi Raikkonen’s three podium finishes from the first flyaway events, which included victory in the season-opening Australian Grand Prix, have helped Lotus deliver a greater points improvement than any other outfit compared to last year. Looking at the points scored in the first four races last year, against what the team have delivered this time around, Lotus has notched up 36 points more in the first four races than it did last year.
Horner says RRA not the way forward
April 8th, 2013
Formula 1′s best chance of effectively controlling costs is to ensure the stability of future regulations, according to Red Bull boss Christian Horner. Horner has often been an outspoken critic of financial controls, telling AUTOSPORT that F1 ‘should not be run by accountants’ in response to plans for the FIA to get involved in policing the Resource Restriction Agreement. Red Bull withdrew from the Formula One Teams’ Association at the end of 2011 amid a general impasse over the feasibility and reach of the RRA.
Analysis: tyres the headache, not times
March 15th, 2013
Uncertainty about the implications of Formula 1′s aggressive new Pirelli tyres on qualifying and the race, rather than questions about the competitive order, are dominating teams’ thoughts in Australia. While the paddock is in agreement that the closeness of the top five teams makes it impossible to predict who will come out on top this weekend, there are even greater questions marks about how higher degrading rubber is going to affect the weekend. Low track and air temperatures in winter testing left teams experiencing graining that meant long run data gathering was pretty meaningless for tyre data.
Cutting costs ‘F1′s biggest challenge’
December 15th, 2012
Peter Sauber believes that the biggest challenge facing contemporary Formula 1 is the need to cut costs. Sauber, who stood down as team principal of his eponymously-named outfit this year, believes that a budget cap would be an effective way of tackling this problem
Keselowski hails impetus of Ford swap
December 12th, 2012
Brad Keselowski believes Penske’s switch to Ford will provide a much-needed boost to motivation levels following his 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup title success. The 28-year-old became Penske’s first Cup champion in the final round of the season at Homestead, triumphing after nearest rival Jimmie Johnson hit trouble. Speaking during Tuesday’s test at Charlotte Motor Speedway, where Penske has started its transition from Dodge to Ford , he admitted it would be easy for energy and drive to slip in the wake of the team’s triumph.

Raikkonen never doubted Lotus potential
August 28th, 2012
Kimi Raikkonen never had doubts Lotus would bounce back from its troubled 2011 campaign – as he insists the team has what it takes to gun for the title. Ahead of what is expected to be a full-on victory bid for Raikkonen and Lotus at the Belgian Grand Prix, the former champion says his Enstone outfit has strengths that can help it overcome bigger budget rivals like McLaren and Ferrari. Speaking exclusively to AUTOSPORT about why he was so keen to sign for Lotus after its difficult time last year, Raikkonen said: “There have been years when I’ve been in top teams and we’ve had a pretty bad year, and then the next year has been completely different.
Ekstrom frustrated by Q4 slump
June 30th, 2012
Mattias Ekstrom described Norisring DTM qualifying as “the biggest disappointment for a long time,” after his pole position hopes vanished in Q4. The Swede had set the pace in the second and third sections of qualifying – including a 48.822-second lap that was the fastest of the weekend so far – and was therefore the last man to set his Q4 time, which was the slowest of the four drivers that made it through to the one-lap shoot-out. After being beaten by HWA Mercedes drivers Gary Paffett and Jamie Green and RBM BMW’s Augusto Farfus, the Abt Audi driver was at a loss to describe what had gone wrong, saying: “I had a clean lap, but it just wasn’t quick enough

Many teams struggled to get the balance right during an additional practice session that NASCAR scheduled for Saturday afternoon in order to give competitors the chance to sample a harder left-side tyre.

November 16th, 2011

The 24-year-old Czech had tested a 2009 Renault in his regular role as one of the team’s junior drivers. He has set his sights on an F1 role next year now that he has completed the 300km qualifying distance behind the wheel of an HRT at Yas Marina.
