Mercedes: holding up rivals not enough
May 17th, 2013
Mercedes says it cannot rely Monaco’s lack of overtaking opportunities to make up for its race-day tyre issues. The Brackley-based team has impressed with its single-lap form this year, securing pole position at the last three races. However, it has struggled with its longer-run pace and both Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton have endured frustrating slumps down the order in races.
Mercedes ‘cannot get carried away’
April 2nd, 2013
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has warned that his team must keep its feet firmly on the ground despite admitting its strong start to the season has raised expectations.
Mercedes hails Rosberg’s team spirit
March 28th, 2013
Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff has praised Nico Rosberg for setting aside his personal interests for the good of the team in the Malaysian Grand Prix. The German was asked to hold ground behind Lewis Hamilton at Sepang in order to secure a three-four finish for the Brackley-based squad. Hamilton admitted afterward that Rosberg had deserved his podium spot
Button impressed by Mercedes
March 2nd, 2013
Jenson Button has singled out Mercedes as the team that has impressed him the most in pre-season testing. Amid a growing view in the F1 paddock that Mercedes has made a major step forward with its W04 to rejoin the battle at the front of the field, Button too has no doubts about the form of his Brackley-based rivals. When asked about which other teams look fast right now, Button said: “I can’t tell anything from the tests so far
Perez shrugs off McLaren tech changes
March 1st, 2013
Sergio Perez insists that McLaren’s chances of winning the world championship this year will not be compromised by the technical staffing shake-up caused by Paddy Lowe’s planned departure. Lowe has been moved away from McLaren’s F1 efforts for the remainder of the year ahead of an expected move to Mercedes in 2014.
Lauda insists Lowe no threat to Brawn
February 26th, 2013
Ross Brawn’s immediate future as team principal at Mercedes is not in doubt, insists its chairman Niki Lauda, despite Paddy Lowe planning to switch from McLaren. Speculation that Brawn will be stepping down from his role sooner rather than later grew after it emerged that McLaren technical director Lowe has agreed to join Mercedes at the start of next year.
Rosberg encouraged despite failure
February 5th, 2013
Nico Rosberg has faith that Mercedes has delivered a step forward with its new W04 , despite his running being cut short on the opening day of Formula 1 pre-season testing. The Brackley-based team was forced to abandon its efforts for the day after just 14 laps on Tuesday, because modifications to its wiring loom are needed overnight after an electrical problem stopped the car out on track. But although the reliability issue was a setback for Mercedes, Rosberg says early impressions of the car are encouraging

December 3rd, 2012
Mercedes boss Ross Brawn is hopeful he can prove Lewis Hamilton wrong and give the Briton a car that is capable of fighting for victories in 2013. Hamilton is leaving McLaren at the end of the year after a six-year spell at the Woking team to race alongside Nico Rosberg at Mercedes from next season.
Mercedes could ditch double-DRS
October 31st, 2012
Mercedes has conceded that it may elect not to race with a passive double-DRS next season, thanks to the difficulties it has experienced in getting the system to work so far this year. The Brackley-based team has tried the concept during Friday practice at several recent races , but has already ruled out racing it in the final three grands prix of the year
Mercedes ‘didn’t offer more money’
September 28th, 2012
Mercedes did not break the bank to secure Lewis Hamilton’s services, claims its team principal Ross Brawn. Hamilton’s move from McLaren to Mercedes came amid suggestions that the Brackley-based outfit was offering him a higher retainer than his current team – as well as greater commercial freedom to find personal sponsors. However, Brawn says that Hamilton’s motivation to move teams had nothing to do with money – and was instead about finding a new challenge in his career
Mercedes upgrades get green light
September 18th, 2012
Michael Schumacher and Nico Rosberg’s hopes of a step forward in form from Mercedes have been lifted with their team poised to race its new Coanda-effect exhausts at this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix, AUTOSPORT can reveal. The Brackley-based outfit tested a heavily revised exhaust layout on its W03 during last week’s young driver test at Magny-Cours – making use of the concept that has been put to good use by a number of teams this year including Ferrari, McLaren and Sauber. The developments completed more than 1000 kilometres during the three days of testing in the hands of Sam Bird and Brendon Hartley – and team sources suggest the outfit was hugely encouraged by the performance boost they brought to the car.
Hartley hopes F1 test leads to more
September 14th, 2012
Brendon Hartley hopes that a solid return to Formula 1 action with Mercedes this week is enough to secure him further opportunities in the future. The New Zealander drove for the Brackley-based team on the final day of this week’s Magny-Cours young driver test – which was his first proper time back in an F1 cockpit since he was dropped by Red Bull in 2010.
Bird encouraged by Mercedes updates
September 13th, 2012
Mercedes has reason to be encouraged by the progress that it has made with its revamped car at this week’s Magny-Cours test, reckons Sam Bird. Although the team still needs time to analyse the data from the test , where the W03 featured Coanda-effect exhausts and a new double-DRS , Bird thinks that it can be satisfied with the progress it has shown this week. “It was very productive,” said Bird, who has handed over the car to Brendon Hartley for the final day

September 11th, 2012
Brendon Hartley believes he is much better prepared for a return to the Formula 1 cockpit now than he was when he got his first chance with Red Bull. As AUTOSPORT revealed earlier this week, H artley will drive for Mercedes at the Magny-Cours young driver test on Thursday if the Brackley-based outfit is able to complete all the work it needs to in the first two days with regular test driver Sam Bird.

Mercedes ‘needs to find half a second’
July 24th, 2012
Mercedes is lacking around half a second of laptime compared to the frontrunners, and must find that performance if it is to return to winning ways. That is the view of Mercedes-Benz motorsport boss Norbert Haug, who thinks that while the Brackley-based outfit has made considerable progress this year it is still not at the level it needs to be.
Schumacher decision due in six weeks
July 3rd, 2012
Michael Schumacher’s future in Formula 1 will be sorted out within the next six weeks, with his Mercedes team now preparing to make a decision on what it wants to do with its drivers for next year. The seven-time champion’s contract with the Brackley-based team runs out at the end of this season, and both he and the team have been open-minded about whether they will continue or decide to call time on his career. Speaking at the FOTA Fans’ Forum at the Williams factory on Tuesday night, Mercedes team principal Ross Brawn said he expected a decision before the end of the summer break about Schumacher’s future
Schumacher positive for European GP
June 15th, 2012
Michael Schumacher says he and Mercedes are heading to the European Grand Prix in an optimistic mood, despite a disappointing outing in Canada last weekend. The Brackley-based outfit had been singled out as one of the favourites for victory in Montreal, but it did not manage to unlock its full potential – and Schumacher’s race ended with a rare DRS failure that left his wing flap open.
