Mercedes duo cautious over win chance
April 12th, 2013
Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton believe it is too early to start thinking of fighting victory in the Chinese Grand Prix despite Mercedes’ strong start to the weekend. The duo were comfortably quickest in the opening practice session before finishing fourth and seventh in the afternoon . Rosberg dominated the Shanghai event last year from pole position, but the German insists he is not getting carried away
Brawn says team orders a no-brainer
March 25th, 2013
Ross Brawn believes that instructing his drivers to hold position in the closing stages of the Malaysian Grand Prix was a no-brainer because both Mercedes cars were marginal on fuel. Although Nico Rosberg was frustrated at being ordered to hold position behind Lewis Hamilton at the end, Brawn says that calling off the race was totally the right thing for the Brackley-based outfit to do. He has revealed that team data shows that although Rosberg felt he had the pace to threaten the Red Bulls if he had been allowed to overtake Hamilton, his fuel situation meant he had no realistic chance of doing so.
McLaren: Alonso’s lead is vulnerable
August 31st, 2012
Fernando Alonso’s world championship lead is ‘exposed’ due to Ferrari not having the quickest car right now. That is the view of McLaren technical director Paddy Lowe, who says that his outfit takes heart from the current pecking order in Formula 1 – which makes it more likely Ferrari’s rivals will be able to close down its advantage. “They are certainly not the frontrunner of the four [leading] teams,” said Lowe, when asked by AUTOSPORT about Alonso’s comments that Ferrari was slowest of the title contenders
Top teams keen for customer hybrids
May 4th, 2012
The two manufacturers planning to race hybrid systems at this year’s Le Mans 24 Hours, Audi and Toyota, want to see the technology become more widely available to customer teams in the future.
Hamilton: McLaren in very good shape
March 2nd, 2012
Lewis Hamilton says McLaren has nothing to fear from rivals’ upgrades as top teams prepare to introduce their final pre-season developments at Barcelona this weekend. Both McLaren and Red Bull are tipped to bring substantial updates to the last two days of 2012 Formula 1 winter testing, but Hamilton reckons his team will be in good shape whatever the opposition does
Trulli: It is ‘the end of qualifying’
May 10th, 2011
Lotus driver Jarno Trulli says the Turkish Grand Prix marked what he believes is “the end of qualifying” in Formula 1. The degradation of Pirelli’s soft tyres meant several drivers decided to do just one run in qualifying in Turkey, with Ferrari’s Felipe Massa even deciding to not go for a second run despite failing to set a time in his first one. Several other drivers decided to compromise their qualifying position in order to have a new set of tyres for the race
Q and A: Mateschitz on Red Bull’s titles
November 16th, 2010
Just six years after it took over the Jaguar team to create Red Bull Racing, Dietrich Mateschitz’s energy drink empire celebrated its first Formula 1 championship successes in recent weeks as RBR clinched the 2010 constructors’ title and Sebastian Vettel added the drivers’ crown in Abu Dhabi. AUTOSPORT’s Austrian correspondent Gerhard Kuntschik talked to Mateschitz after Red Bull’s moment of glory.
