iRacer Profile – David Williams
by David Phillips on April 14th, 2012
It figures that David Williams’ has become a fixture in the iRacing.com Grand Prix Series World Championship. His favorite real world race series is Formula One, what he terms “the pinnacle” of motor sports. Then there’s the fact that the iGPSWC is contested in a Williams-Toyota FW31, even if the convergence of names owes more to coincidence than any genetic linkage to Sir Frank Williams. But despite the facts that a string of top tens in the 2011 series earned him ninth in the standings and that he held-down 14th spot in the 2012 standings heading into this weekend’s race at Sebring, the highlight of the Englishman’s sim racing career came in a (relatively) humble Star Mazda. That would be the Star Mazda which he piloted to third place in [...]
Huttu Tops iRacing.com Intel GP Series World Final
by David Phillips on March 4th, 2011
Finland’s Greger Huttu further solidified his unofficial title as the world’s greatest sim racer by winning this morning’s iRacing.com Intel® GP Series World Final, a thirty lap race in Star Mazdas at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. After qualifying second to Bastien Bartsch (France), Huttu grabbed the lead on the second lap and was never headed. The Scandinavian didn’t have an easy time of it, however, as Bartsch applied pressure throughout the race and took the checkered flag just .9s behind the winner with England’s David Williams rounding-out the podium in third. A one-two punch in Team Redline’s line-up in official iRacing series competition, Bartsch and Huttu led the qualifying round for the World Final with the Frenchman posting an impressive lap of 1:17.990 around Laguna Seca’s 11 turn, 2.238 mile [...]
iRacing Intel® GP Finals at Hand
March 3rd, 2011
In less than 24 hours, the first champion of the inaugural iRacing.com Intel® GP Series World Final will be crowned. The champion could be any one of ten of the world’s top sim racers who have journeyed to Hannover, Germany from Australia, the United States and many parts of Europe for the Intel Extreme Masters Tournament. The ten will have at it in their virtual Star Mazdas over 30 laps of the demanding Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Who will win is anybody’s guess, but one thing’s for sure: you’ll be able to watch all the action live, beginning at 9 am GMT (4 am ET) Friday (March 4) or on replays at http://www.iracing.com/multimedia/live-broadcasts/ Bastien Bartsch and Jake Stergios represent the international dimension of the event. Bartsch, 25, hails from Valence, [...]
Alfalla Brings Big Mo to iRacing.com Intel® GP Series World Final
by David Phillips on March 2nd, 2011
Given that the United States/Canada qualifying round for the iRacing Intel® GP Series was held in September, momentum wouldn’t figure to play much of a role in Friday’s iRacing.com Intel® GP Series World Final. Or that a sim racer from Florida would be able to pack some momentum in his carry-on for the flight to Hannover, Germany, where the race is being held as part of the Intel Grand Masters Tournament. But if any one of the ten iRacers from the USA, Europe and Australia who’ll be driving their virtual Star Mazdas in Friday’s 30 lapper at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca can be said to have “Big Mo” on their side, it’s Ray Alfalla. After all, the Cape Coral-based Alfalla won the opening round of the 2011 NASCAR iRacing.com Series [...]
An Epic Journey to Show Sim Racing in a New Light
by David Phillips on March 1st, 2011
If there was a “longest tow” award at Friday’s iRacing.com Intel® GP Series World Final in Hannover, Germany it would be a dead heat between Ian Lake and Mitchell McLeod. The two Australians quite literally traveled from half a world away to participate in the Super Bowl of sim racing, which is scheduled to take place on Friday, March 4 at 10:00 am CET (4 am ET). To either catch a live broadcast of the race or a replay go to http://www.iracing.com/multimedia/live-broadcasts/ Their epic journey to compete against nine of the world’s best sim racers in Star Mazdas in a 30 lap race around a virtual Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca is just one of the unique dynamics of the event. “I think every part of this competition is adding its [...]
Sim Racing’s Super Bowl Another Chance for Huttu to Shine
by David Phillips on February 28th, 2011
Professional football has already had its Super Bowl this year, stock car racing its Daytona 500. Now sim racing takes the spotlight with the iRacing.com Intel® GP Series World Final on Friday, March 4 which will be broadcast live at 10:00 CET (4:00 am ET). Part of the Intel Extreme Masters Tournament at the CeBIT technology exposition in Hannover, Germany, the race pits ten of the world’s top online racing drivers against one another in a quest for the lion’s share of more than $18,000 in prizes and the honor of being crowned iRacing.com Intel® GP World Champion. Sim racers from as far away as New South Wales, Ohio and Florida will be journeying to Germany for the event. But it’s a safe bet that in most everyone’s eyes, the [...]
Lake, McLeod Grab Intel GP Finals Spots
December 13th, 2010
Ian Lake and Mitchell McLeod grabbed the final two spots in the Intel GP World Finals competition by finishing one-two in Sunday’s Asia/Australia finals. Lake led McLeod home by 3.93s after twenty laps of Star Mazda online racing at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The two Australians will join eight sim racers from the United States and Europe in the Intel Extreme Masters Tournament at Cebit in Hannover, Germany on March 4, 2011. The ten competitors will be competing for the title of Intel GP World Champion and their share of the World Final’s nearly $18,000 purse. In addition to Lake and McLeod, the finalists include Ray Alfalla (USA), Bastien Bartsch (France), Wyatt Gooden (USA), Greger Huttu (Finland), Jason Lisner (USA), Richard Towler (England), Jake Stergios (USA) and David Williams (England). [...]
Asia/Australia Intel GP Final Field Set
by David Phillips on November 24th, 2010
Ten iRacers qualified for the Asia/Australia Intel GP Series Finals during the Asia/Australia Regionals at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, November 16-22. The ten top point-getters include Tatsuro Hashimoto (Club International) and Marc Beeson, Danny Davidson, Ian Lake, Darren Marsh, Luke McLean, Mitchell McLeod, John Pickett, Jamie Rosenzweig and Jonathan Salhani (all from Club Australia). The ten finalists will square-off in the Asia/Australia Intel GP Series Finals on Sunday, December 12. The online racing competition will feature Star Mazdas racing over 20 laps at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, with the top two finishers moving on to the Intel GP World Finals. Scheduled for March 3, 2011 at Cebit in Hannover, Germany the Intel GP Series Finals will feature ten finalists from America, Europe and Asia/Australia. Earlier this year, the European and [...]
