Unfair to tweak 2013 tyres – Lotus

Lotus thinks it would be unfair if Pirelli makes changes to the tyres later this season just because some teams are struggling to make the rubber last. After a number of outfits were forced to make four-stops during the Spanish Grand Prix due to the high degradation, Pirelli has conceded that it may have to tweak its tyres to limit a repeat in the future. Such changes could hamper the Lotus outfit, which appears perfectly suited to the high degrading rubber with its E21

Fry sidelined by appendicitis

Ferrari technical supremo Pat Fry will miss the rest of the Spanish Grand Prix weekend after being diagnosed with appendicitis. Fry was taken to hospital in Barcelona on Saturday morning after visiting the Ferrari team doctor amid the suspicion that he was suffering either from kidney stones or appendicitis. The latter was diagnosed and Fry is undergoing a routine operation during the afternoon.
Pirelli: debris caused di Resta’s issue

Pirelli now suspects that Paul di Resta’s tyre failure in practice for the Spanish Grand Prix was caused by a cut in the rubber. After overnight inspection of the remains of the left rear tyre that gave way on di Resta’s car, Pirelli suspects that the tread overheated after debris caused a small cut in it. The overheating, allied to the force being put through the rubber, caused the tyre to fail as di Resta exited the high-speed final corner at the Circuit de Catalunya
McLaren: no quick fix for car problems

McLaren admits that fixing the problems on its MP4-28 is going to be a long-term project, as it further played down talk of a dramatic step forward in Spain this weekend. Tech 3 suffers Austin pit fire

The Tech 3 MotoGP team says it is ready to compete in the Grand Prix of the Americas this weekend despite a fire in its garage overnight. One of the electric starters to start the bikes up caught fire inside Cal Crutchlow’s and Bradley Smith’s pit garage at Austin. The track’s sprinkler system was immediately activated and prevented any serious damage.
Le Mans to recreate original layout

A section of the original layout of the Le Mans 24 Hours circuit will be recreated as part of the 90th anniversary celebrations of the French endurance classic. The roads at the Pontlieue Hairpin, the most northerly point of the first layout of the Circuit de la Sarthe used from 1923-1928, will be returned to their 1920s glory for the week of this year’s 24 Hours in June.
Ducati admits Austin will be tough

Ducati admits it will arrive at Austin on the back foot following its decision to skip MotoGP’s pre-season test at the Texan track. While Honda and Yamaha’s factory riders completed a collective 10 days of running in March, Ducati’s sole experience comes via Nicky Hayden’s brief run around the circuit on a street bike. Following the season-opening Qatar Grand Prix, where Andrea Dovizioso and Hayden were seventh and eighth respectively, Ducati team manager Vittoriano Guareschi acknowledged his team faces a difficult weekend.

MotoGP world champion Jorge Lorenzo believes Yamaha and Honda’s rivals will rue not joining them for their private Austin test given how hard it is to master the track. The factory Hondas and Yamahas, plus LCR Honda rider Stefan Bradl, are testing at MotoGP’s new American venue this week . After Tuesday’s opening day of running, Lorenzo said he liked the Circuit of the Americas layout but was very relieved to have extra time to learn it.
Austin gets final MotoGP inspection

Austin’s Circuit of the Americas has undergone its final FIM inspection prior to MotoGP’s test debut at the Texan venue next week. The leading MotoGP teams will test at Austin from March 12-14.
