Jorge Lorenzo went under the lap record at Jerez to top the opening MotoGP practice session for the Spanish Grand Prix. The reigning world champion delivered a 1m39.701s lap to topple erstwhile leader Dani Pedrosa by three thousandths of a second. Lorenzo’s team-mate Valentino Rossi was third fastest while Austin victor Marc Marquez was fifth, three quarters of a second back

Dani Pedrosa remained on top on day two of pre-season MotoGP testing at Sepang, but times stayed extremely close. In a repeat of Tuesday’s lead order , Honda’s Pedrosa very narrowly edged out Yamaha rival Jorge Lorenzo. This time the gap between Pedrosa’s 2m00.549s and Lorenzo’s best effort was just 0.019 seconds.

Danilo Petrucci was quickest in a very quiet opening MotoGP practice session at Misano. Damp and very cold conditions dissuaded most of the prototype field from coming out, meaning the timesheets were dominated by CRT riders. Petrucci’s late 1m43.178s on the Suter-BMW that Ioda has switched to this weekend put him 0.2 seconds ahead of Michele Pirro’s Gresini FTR-Honda.

Vermeulen hopes to help improve bike

The Australian is substituting for Colin Edwards at the leading CRT squad while the latter recovers from the broken collarbone he sustained in a qualifying crash at Estoril a fortnight ago.
Stoner dominates opening practice

Casey Stoner proved his surprise decision to retire at the end of the 2012 MotoGP season had done little to dim his pace or hunger by going fastest in the opening practice session at Le Mans. Stoner went clear early on and rarely looked troubled thereafter, and for half the session was almost one second clear of the field. When others, chiefly his Honda stable-mate Dani Pedrosa, did close in, the Australian went back out and lowered his benchmark further, ending the session 0.587 seconds clear of Pedrosa.
Edwards undergoes successful surgery

Colin Edwards underwent successful surgery on his broken left collarbone in Barcelona’s Insitituto Universitario DEXEUS hospital on Monday afternoon following his crash in qualifying for the Portuguese Grand Prix. The American had a plate and screws fitted by regular MotoGP surgeon Dr Javier Mir, who also operated on Edwards when he broke his other collarbone in a crash at Catalunya last June. “Doctor Mir and his team have done a great job,” said Edwards.

Casey Stoner captured his first pole position of his 2012 MotoGP title defence as a late red flag produced a frantic finish to qualifying at Estoril. Five riders were in contention in what became a thrilling pole battle, fought out between the works Hondas and Yamahas and Tech 3 Yamaha’s Cal Crutchlow, who played a starring role.

Casey Stoner edged MotoGP’s Friday morning pacesetter Ben Spies in second practice ahead of this weekend’s Portuguese Grand Prix at Estoril. The pair traded fastest times in the final 10 minutes of a dry second session, before Stoner (Honda) eventually settled the issue with a 1m38.396s – putting him more than three tenths clear of the field. Spies did enough to claim second, in the process outpacing his Yamaha stable-mate Jorge Lorenzo for the first time this year.

Lorenzo flies to Qatar pole

Jorge Lorenzo claimed pole position for the MotoGP season-opening Qatar Grand Prix, denying Casey Stoner a fourth straight Losail pole. It was reigning champion Stoner who led the way for Honda for most of the hour, as he both topped the part of the session devoted to practice, then improved to a 1m55.149s on his first concerted pole shot with 11 minutes left. That was beaten by Lorenzo’s 1m54.993s for Yamaha just afterwards, and although four-time Qatar winner Stoner fought back with a 1m54.855s, it put him on top for less than a minute before the Yamaha lapped 0.221 seconds quicker.
