James Hinchcliffe hopes that his maiden IndyCar victory at St Petersburg will silence some of the doubters from earlier in his career, when he suspects that his light-hearted persona was interpreted as not taking his job seriously. After holding held off veteran Helio Castroneves to secure the win , the Canadian said that the manner of the victory should put any lingering questions about his commitment to rest. “I’ve always tried to be myself at the racetrack,” he said
Mercedes will protect data from Honda

Lewis Hamilton believes Ross Brawn will stay at the Mercedes Formula 1 squad, having been personally assured of the team principal’s long-term commitment. Zanardi rules out DTM move

Alex Zanardi has now officially ruled out a move to the DTM, despite testing a BMW last month. Speculation that the Italian could return to motor racing following his success in the Paralympics increased after he tried out a DTM BMW M3 as part of the German car manufacturer’s 40th anniversary celebrations of its motorsport division in November. But despite holding talks with BMW about a possible tie-up, Zanardi has now confirmed that he wants to remain focused on his cycling – and cannot give the commitment it would take to race in touring cars

Hyundai WRC car breaks cover

Hyundai’s i20 WRC, with which it plans to return to the World Rally Championship, has run for the first time in Europe. The car, produced in South Korea and first unveiled in September , was flown into Germany for two days at an ADAC test centre just outside Frankfurt early last week.
Formula 2 will not run in 2013

MotorSport Vision, promoters of the Formula 2 championship, have announced the series will not run in 2013 after just four years of existence. The championship, a revival of the former Formula 2 series that ran until 1984, was launched in 2009 as a one-make class using cars built by Williams and powered by Audi engines. The limited success of the series, however, has forced MSV boss Jonathan Palmer to cancel the championship after only four seasons
Ford pulls works backing from WRC

Ford will cease to have a factory presence in the World Rally Championship at the end of the 2012 season. Leading NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers have welcomed NASCAR’s reinstatement of AJ Allmendinger , following his suspension after a failed drugs test. Allmendinger successfully completed NASCAR’s Substance Abuse Policy Road To Recovery programme in August, after first being suspended in early July when results of a test performed at Kentucky Speedway on June 29 drew a positive result. A test of a ‘B’ sample later led to an indefinite suspension

Carlin, Fortec committed to British F3

The two biggest teams in the British Formula 3 International Series have affirmed their commitment to their domestic contest for 2012 in the wake of the FIA’s announcement of a European F3 Championship. Both Carlin and Fortec Motorsport, who account for nine of the 10 drivers currently confirmed for the series’ main class, have stated that they will definitely compete in British F3 in 2012. Carlin chief Trevor Carlin said that the European championship would make “absolutely no difference” to his team’s British F3 commitment
No new Dallara aero kit for 2013

Dallara has confirmed that it will not be producing a new aero kit for the 2013 IndyCar season. All of the new DW12 IndyCars will use Dallara bodywork this year before the series opens the regulations up to allow any manufacturer to produce and sell aero kits for 2013. However Dallara’s Andrea Toso told the official IndyCar website that the company would focus on assembling new cars and providing spares packages for the current aero kit rather than going into competition with other manufacturers next year.
Williams partners with Michael Johnson

Williams F1 has announced a deal with Olympic gold medallist and former 200m world record holder Michael Johnson. Johnson’s Performance Inc company will provide an intensive training programme for the Formula 1 team’s pit crew personnel, and also evaluate its current training programme. In return, the MJP logo will be displayed on the sleeves of driver and team overalls and on team kit.
Kubica loss ‘biggest blow’ to Renault

Renault team boss Eric Boullier believes the absence of Robert Kubica was a bigger factor in the squad’s poor 2011 season than the unsuccessful forward-facing exhaust layout. GP3 working on 2012 Monaco date

GP3 organisers have confirmed they are working on adding the series to the Monaco Grand Prix support bill for the first time next year. The series revealed its 2012 calendar on Friday afternoon, including support events at seven of the European grands prix.
Renault says driver decision imminent

Renault will make a decision on its 2012 driver line-up within the next fortnight, team principal Eric Boullier said in Brazil on Saturday. With the outfit evaluating several options for next year now that it is confirmed Robert Kubica will not be ready to start the campaign, the final call will be made at an imminent meeting of the Enstone-based team’s board. Boullier said that a number of drivers were under consideration, with various strategies being looked at – which is understood to include others like Romain Grosjean and Bruno Senna, experienced drivers such as Kimi Raikkonen and Adrian Sutil and even those like Heikki Kovalainen, who have deals elsewhere but could be bought out of their contract
HVM to use Lotus engines in 2012

HVM has become the second team to confirm it will use Lotus engines in the 2012 IndyCar Series, after Michael Shank Racing announced last month that it was use the motors for its entry into the category. HVM team owner and former Formula 1 entrant Keith Wiggins said of the decision that he had no doubts about switching to Lotus power for the new-for-2012 format instead of the Honda or Chevrolet options. “Despite the choices, once it was apparent that Lotus would produce an engine, it was a clear decision for us to run with them,” said Wiggins.
Mallya sets sights on beating Renault

Vijay Mallya wants his team to knuckle down and focus on trying to beat Renault to fifth place in the constructors’ championship, on the back of an encouraging run of results. The Silverstone-based outfit is 22 points behind Renault in the standings with five grands prix remaining, but has taken 24 points out of its Enstone rivals in the last four races. In Singapore last weekend, the team delivered its best performance of the season, as Paul di Resta finished sixth and Adrian Sutil eighth.
