19 years old, Jameson Spies lives in Quartz Hill, California. He grew-up surrounded by racing. His mother raced late models throughout Southern California while his father built and setup the car. Not surprisingly, Jameson began racing go-karts at the age of 13, and is now racing Spec Trucks at Toyota Speedway at Irwindale. He has a passion about all forms of racing and hopes to make a career out of it.
  • Jason Lofing
    iRacing.com Series Writer
Jason is 21 years old and was born and raised in Elk Grove. California. A big time NASCAR fan, he hasn’t missed a race on Sunday in years. Lofing is also a huge San Fransisco Giants fan and tries to take in at least a couple games a year. Other than sim racing, his biggest (and far more expensive!) hobby is photography. Although he is rather new to sim racing, Lofing has already accomplished some pretty impressive results, qualifying for the 2011 iRacing Oval Pro Series in Season 1, 2011, winning the inaugural Landon Cassill Qualifying Challenge and finishing runner-up in the second one.

I was born in New Haven, Connecticut in 1988 and moved to Midland, Michigan when I was two years old. I stayed there until third grade when I moved to Farmington Hills, Michigan and now I currently live in Naperville, IL where I'm attending Metea Valley High School as a 9th grader. In the past, I have participated in soccer and this year I plan on joining swimming or water polo. My family includes my 15 year old sister, a 7 year old sister and my mom and dad. I have been writing since 6th grade and have participated in many writing contests in my school and have received several awards for writing.
My fascination for motorsports began when I was nine. The first NASCAR race I watched on TV was the 2009 Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Infineon Raceway, won by Kasey Kahne. My favorite NASCAR drivers are Kyle Busch, Dale Earnhardt Jr, and Jimmie Johnson. I have watched all the races in the NASCAR Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Camping World Truck Series since 2010. I currently have three wins on iRacing, two of them in the Nationwide car at Daytona and one in the Street stocks at Charlotte. My favorite car and type of track on iRacing is the Nationwide Series (B Class) car and superspeedways.

I am a veteran sim racer who first started racing way back in 1993 on the SPRTSIMS section of Compuserve with a league who can trace themselves all the way to the present. Within that league I act as Chief Steward and try to bring the unique viewpoint that this experience gives me into my articles.
I have a BA (Hons) in Journalism and Editorial design and have been writing for seven years and currently cover the Lotus 79 CTC and Radical series alongside my freelance work. Living in the UK, as well as motorsports I love Photography, Arts and Crafts and reading.

I was born in Adelaide and we moved-out for Angle Vale for a few years until I was about 7 years old, when we moved to the Barossa Valley where I live now. I'm 19 years old and currently traveling back and forth weekly as I'm studying for a Diploma of Furniture Design and Technology.

I've always had a love for racing as my close family did some racing and we were always out at the local dirt track. I joined iRacing back in 2010 and slowly but surely got the hang of it as this is my first experience with sim racing and am loving it each time I race. I've won two SK Modified titles (almost had three in a row but finished P2 in 2011 S4), an inRacingNews Challenge championship (2012 S1 Mazda) and was also an AustralAsian Intel GT Series Finalist.
  • Nathan Aljoe
    Contributing Writer
Nathan's passion for motorsport first began in the late 1980s, captivated by the season in which Aryton Senna won his first F1 title with McLaren. Over the years his interest widened to include the British Touring Car Championship, World Rally Championship, NASCAR and various other forms of motorsport. Nathan began sim-racing in the mid 1990s using games developed by Papyrus. He later moved onto SimBim simulations such as GTR, GTR2 and GTR Evolution and has most recently joined the iRacing community.

When he's not working or sim racing, Nathan enjoys spending time and relaxing with his family. Other hobbies include going to festivals, tinkering with his car and doing up his house.
  • Austin Hartenfels
    Contributing Writer
Born and raised in Fredericksburg, Virginia, I have always had a serious passion for cars and motorsports. Hoping one day to become an automotive journalist for a magazine, I constantly crave the exciting competition that comes along with racing and sim-racing. Having participated in a mere test session in a Legends car at Old Dominion Speedway, I have not been able to get into any real-life competition . . . yet.

As a sim racer, my interests date back to "GTR Evolution." My goal is to have fun and win some races. I made it to Oval Pro in 2010, but did not become very successful. I enjoy any mixed road racing competition and love racing the Silverados around almost any track.
  • Jordan Hightower

Jordan began sim-racing in 2005 with the NASCAR Racing 2003 Season sim and then joined the iRacing community in June of 2008. He hails from Fort Smith, Arkansas where he is currently enrolled at the University of Arkansas Fort Smith, after which he plans to attend the University of Arkansas to earn his MBA. Although he enjoys watching and playing basketball, most of Jordan's focus is on motorsports, particularly NASCAR: "Anything that burns gas and goes fast, I like."
  • Scott Kelly
    Contributing Writer
Born and raised in the greater St. Louis, Missouri area, Scott Kelly has had a love for motorsports ever since his father did the right thing by introducing auto racing into his life. No longer able to quench his need for speed by spectating NASCAR races on TV and watching dirt track stars slide around local tracks, Kelly eventually picked-up sim racing in his teens, wheeling cars found in Ratbag Games' "Dirt Track Racing" and "World of Outlaws: Sprint Cars" while also becoming introduced into multiple Papyrus sim-racing series. Joining the iRacing ranks in late 2011, Kelly set his sights on the short track racing he was familiar with, focusing on the sprint car, while also driving the Legends and street stock in multiple iRacing.com leagues.

Kelly brings not just his enthusiasm for racing to the highest-rated motorsports simulation, but also his B.A. degree in English; he covers the action seen in the iRacing.com Sprint Car Series, while also placing the spotlight on various leagues within the service. Enjoying his start to a career in motorsports journalism, Kelly also doesn't mind visiting victory lane from time-to-time.

I was born in Florence, South Carolina in 1989 and have lived here my entire life. I've been around racing since I was a young kid watching with my dad on Sundays. In 2009 and found my local track, Florence Motor Speedway and started working for them as a PR guy the same year. At the end of that season, I started writing for RACE22.com, a Late Model Stock Car news site. In 2010, I picked up my first DSLR camera and started shooting races. To this day, I've experienced some of the best races from behind the camera.

I've been with the iRacing service since its public beta in 2008, back when the top oval car was the Late Model. I've been in over 500 races on the service with 70+ wins on both oval and road. My favorite car on the service is the Chevrolet Silverado. Darlington Raceway and Concord Speedway are my favorite tracks simply because everybody hates them.

When Kevin Gries says his favorite iRacing car is “definitely” a Corvette C6.R believe him.  Officially-speaking, he hasn’t run a race, a time trial or even practiced in anything besides a ‘Vette since a mid-November run in a Class A Impala at Homestead.  Since then it’s been a steady diet of Corvette and the iRacing.com Prototype/GT Challenge . . . to good effect.  With 11 wins in 23 starts, Gries has planted himself securely in second place in the overall standings, a little bit too far behind Nikita Gorlov to have any hope of taking the title but well clear of third placed Marcin Skrzypczak. With a P2 and P3 in the same category in Seasons 2 and 3, respectively, Gries is no stranger to the Prototype/GT Challenge podium.  Nor [...]

iRacer Profile: Mirko Salati

Funny what a difference a season can make.  2012 Season 3 saw Mirko Salati best Julian Rodriguez Moreno and Diego Comuni to take the iRacing.com Mustang Challenge on the strength of eight wins and 20 top fives from 22 starts.   Midway through Season 4, with just one start to his name, Salati occupies 318th place in the Pony Car series, some 725 points adrift of leader Dariusz Bielanski.  What’s up with that? Well the arrival of the “most admired” person in Salati’s life – his daughter, who was born in November – may have a little to do with his fall down the Mustang Challenge pecking order.  The resident of Reggio Emilia, Italy readily admits to a significant “downsizing” in the amount of time he spends sim-racing these days.  Then [...]

Petit Le Mans World Tour

Some of the 250+ HPD ARX01Cs to compete in iRacing's Petit Le Mans wail into Turn One at Road Atlanta.

Not long before the Rebellion, Level 5, Oreca, Extreme Speed, IMSA Matmut and Momo race teams sped to class wins (and the Delta Wing once again proved it is in a class of its own) in last weekend’s Petit Le Mans Powered by Mazda, some three dozen iRacers experienced the thrill of victory in the World tour of iRacing’s Petit Le Mans.   Featuring the HPD ARX01c, Corvette C6.R and Ford GT, the multi-class extravaganza attracted nearly 500 sim racers from around the world to iRacing’s virtual Road Atlanta, resulting in a dozen splits and (all told) 30 hours of great online racing. HPD winners included Teemu Iivonen, Marco Arcidiacono, Cameron Todd, Paul Radon, Jonathan Auger, Piotr Bogun, Bill Mann, Peter Short, Mike Dellesandro, Josh Hammett, Esa Hietanen and Shemer T [...]

Overtaking Discipline

The Mazda Cup is the ideal environment for learning and practicing overtaking skills.

I want to spend some time talking about overtaking discipline, and what I believe are the essentials to preserving your (and others’) safety rating and ultimately having an enjoyable iRacing experience. First of all, it’s pretty safe to say that iRacing’s Mazda MX-5 Cup series is an ideal place for newbies and oldies alike to learn how to overtake properly. Things happen much slower in the Mazda than they would in, say, the Corvette C6.R (I’m stating the obvious… but you get what I mean). Additionally, the fixed setup in this series removes any effects that a change in setup would have on the balance of your car – basically you are forced to drive the same Mazda every time (again, stating the obvious but it’s important to note for [...]

Evgeniy Dontsov is open to new challenges.  With 17 wins to his credit, he was a fixture near the very top of the Star Mazda Championship standings for the past few seasons, finishing fourth in 2011 Season 4 and runner-up to Tony Repussard in 2012 Season 1.  Rather than continuing to focus on Star Mazda, however, the Nizhniy Novgorod, Russia resident moved on to something different than the 1335 lb, 260 hp open wheel Star Mazda.  How different?  Try the 2425 lb, 590 hp Corvette C6.R. While it’s fair to say Donstov’s transition from flyweight, open wheel racer to thundering beast of a sports car has not been without its challenges, he’s starting to show similar form to his Star Mazda Championship days.  With wins at Spa and Suzuka he [...]

Weeks 9 and 10 took the iRacing.com Prototype and GT Challenge outside of North America for the final time this season, to a pair of tracks 10,000 miles apart in opposite hemispheres. Their track layouts once again provided the globe-trotting sim racers with contrast from week-to-week as Silverstone’s wide, historic airfield layout in the English countryside differs radically from the tighter, more undulating Phillip Island venue on the south Australian coastline. Silverstone would be the final week with the 70 minute open setup race length, Phillip Island’s 45 minute duration also the last time it would be used this season.  The Thursday and Friday 2000 GMT “hot split” concept for GT drivers continued, however with European daylight savings many drivers also took part in the earlier online race as well. The 14 Days of Florida

by Michael Booth on April 12th, 2012

The LMP2, GT1 and GT2 classes under the lights proved an unusual sight at Daytona.

Weeks 7 and 8 of the iRacing.com Prototype and GT Challenge were spent in Florida, as sim-racers started the second half of their season at two of the most historic venues for road and oval racing in the USA.  The sunshine state is no stranger to multiclass endurance racing, as it hosts a pair famous races – the Daytona 24 hours in January, and the 12 hours of Sebring in March. While Le Mans Prototypes have been a feature at Sebring for many years in the American Le Mans Series, they have never run at Daytona due to the 24 hour race being part of the Grand-Am series. Fortunately the virtual world allows us to put together this car and track combination, with the GT1 and GT2 cars also taking [...]

It didn’t take long for Oscar Sahlin to make an impact on iRacing.  The postman from Södertälje, Sweden joined the service in the middle of 2011 Season 1 and, by the time the final checkered flag of Season 3 had fallen, he had bested the likes of Ryan Field and Brian Strodtbeck to claim the iRacing.com Mustang Challenge title.  The Ford Mustang FR500S remains his metier, as Sahlin had driven his personal virtual (or is that virtual personal?) pony car to third place the past two seasons of the iRacing.com GRAND-AM Sports Car Series.  With the finish line coming into view for 2012 Season 1, he finds himself in a familiar spot — third — behind Paulo Valente and Matthew Davis in the GRAND-AM series with seven wins and ten [...]

The 2012 edition of iRacing’s 120 Minutes of Sebring is in the books after nearly 800 sim racers took part in the online version of America’s oldest endurance race.  The day after Audi, BMW, HPD, Mazda and Porsche celebrated class wins in the 60th annual Twelve Hours of Sebring, scores of HPD ARX01cs, Corvette C6.Rs and Ford GTs took to iRacing’s virtual version of the venerable airport circuit in 17 splits of the best in multi-class online racing. The event went off in two waves, the first a time-friendly slot for Australia/New Zealand/Asia, the second for the Americas/Europe and Africa.  Winners of the top Australia/New Zealand/Asia split were Beau Cubis (HPD ARX01c), Roope Turkilla (Corvette C6.R) and Niek Versteege (Ford GT), while Norbert Sulzer (HPD ARX01c), Teemu Vuolle (Corvette C6.R) [...]

Niek Versteege holds-off Kimmo Suominen through Laguna Seca’s Corkscrew.

Weeks 5 and 6 of the iRacing.com Prototype and GT Challenge visited the longest and shortest tracks on the schedule – Belgium’s Spa-Francorchamps and Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in California – to round-out the first half of the season.  With a history of multiclass endurance racing, and featuring in the World Endurance Championship this year, the 7km Spa track allowed all three cars, especially the GT classes, to stretch their legs on the straights. Laguna Seca on the other hand measures in at just 3.6km in length, the short lap presenting LMP2 drivers with lots of traffic to deal with over a race distance.  Laguna Seca and its famous “Corkscrew” turn have been a permanent fixture on the American Le Mans Series calendar since its inception and a venue on [...]

Barone holds-off Edwards to win at Mid-Ohio.

Weeks 3 and 4 of the iRacing.com Prototype and GT Challenge saw the series venture to Japan for its first international venue of the season, as sim racers tackled the Suzuka International Racing Course, before returning to North America for a visit to the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. The Honda-owned Suzuka circuit is iRacing’s only track to feature a Figure 8 layout, and is no stranger to top class motorsport as it plays host to Formula 1 and Japan’s Super GT series.  Mid-Ohio features blind crests and a short lap length, with the American Le Mans Series and Grand-Am Rolex Series both visiting over the course of the summer months.  While thousands of miles apart, both circuits had something in common – their tight nature and a number of elevation [...]

hello

After Season 4′s initial race at Sebring, the iRacing.com Prototype and GT Challenge set forth along the East Coast to the state of New York, where it took to Round 2 at Watkins Glen Intenational. In keeping with the modern theme of the online racing series, the configuration chosen was the Full Course including the so-called “Boot.” LMP2: HPD ARX-01c After a very competitive start to the championship, Week 2 proved to be very high scoring once again, but this time produced a clear winner. David Williams (England) defended his lead in style with another weekly top score at an impressive 246 points in Saturday’s 8.00pm (UTC) race – against a field of worthy and competitive opponents with every one of the 15 drivers in his class having an iRating [...]

A New Dawn at Sebring

A new season dawned as the iRacing.com Prototype and GT Challenge competitors raced into the Sebring night.

The venue for the start of the iRacing.com Prototype and GT Challenge turned out to be rather fitting, with a night race at Sebring International Raceway. In the latest update all three cars of the series had their tire model significantly updated, the Corvette C6.R even getting the New Tire Model for the first time as more than a few sim racers found themselves in the dark at the dawn of Season 4. After their nightly adventures at the Florida track, the series will head to Watkins Glen Boot to stretch their legs in broad daylight, before heading to Road America for Week 3 and Laguna Seca for Week 4. LMP2: HPD ARX-01c In a very competitive start to the championship it fell to DWC drivers David Williams (England) and [...]

New Tracks, New Features Highlight Season 4 Release

Classic Oulton Park is one of the highlights of the 2011 Season 4 release.

The addition of Oulton Park and Kentucky Speedway, together with a host of new features and infrastructure improvements, highlight iRacing.com’s 2011 Season 4 release. An integral part of the fabric of the British racing scene for more than half a century, Oulton Park boasts eight different configurations, including the 2.8 mile, 12 turn International Circuit, the 2.2 mile, seven turn Island Circuit and the 1.6 mile, six turn Fosters Circuit — each as challenging as it is picturesque.  Long-time host of IZOD IndyCar, NASCAR Nationwide and Camping World Truck Series events, Kentucky is the latest track to join the NASCAR Sprint Cup schedule. And if last summer’s overflow crowd for the 1.5 mile oval’s first Sprint Cup race is any barometer, Kentucky figures to be among the most popular new [...]

LMP2 The fastest car also proved to be the most popular, with a staggering 985 (open setup) and 890 drivers [...]

For a guy whose favorite quote reads “all good things must come to an end. Preferably in a humongous explosion,” Kimmo Suominen enjoyed a particularly “un-volatile” 2011 Season 3.  No surprise, really, given his safety rating of 4.80 and iRating of 6812.  Given those impressive mumbers, it’s also no surprise the resident of Salo, Finland piloted his Corvette C6.R to not one but two racing series championships in Season 3 — the iRacing Prototype and GT Challenge titles in open and fixed set-ups.  With 34 wins in 43 starts in the open series, and 21 wins in 32 tries in the fixed setup C6.R, that comes out to a sweet 73.3% winning percentage. Nor were these two titles anything new for Suominen, who claimed the Season 2 GT Championship (fixed [...]

Radical Changes For the Radical SR8 in Season 3

by John Bodin on August 9th, 2011

The Radical SR8 is the ideal platform for honing and developing sports/prototype skills at the C-Class level.

Sometimes when big news hits the smaller news tidbits get lost in the shuffle, and that seems to be the case for iRacing’s Radical SR8, which has been overshadowed by the recent “big news” of the iRacing 2.0 roll-out.  With all the hoopla over the New Tire Model and the introduction of the new Ford GT and HPD ARX01c, those remaining cars that haven’t yet been fitted with the New Tire Model haven’t really garnered much attention.  As a result, the fact that the Radical SR8 is now featured in the Radical Racing Challenge as a solo, single-car, stand-alone C-Class (D 4.0) online racing series for the first time in over a year has received little fanfare. Previously, the Radical enjoyed an independent existence for a few brief seasons following [...]
