Caterham says LMP2 a perfect fit

A move into the LMP2 division is the perfect fit for British sportscar manufacturer Caterham, according to company design chief Mike Gascoyne. Gascoyne, head of the Caterham’s Technology & Innovation arm, explained that building an LMP2 for the customer market makes sound business sense for the group
Perrinn launches customer LMP1

A British motorsport engineering consultancy has completed the design of a LMP1 prototype to the new-for-2014 rulebook with which it aims to enter the Le Mans customer market. Perrinn Limited is ready to begin building the car as soon as the first customer signs up for the project and believes it can have the first chassis up and running in four months from the first order.
McLaren says Honda deal not exclusive

Honda will be ready to supply more teams in Formula 1 in the future if called on to do so, with McLaren confirming it does not have an exclusive arrangement with the Japanese manufacturer. Ahead of Honda’s return to F1 for 2015 , there have been suggestions that it may seek another customer team in a bid to fast-track its technical knowledge and maximise its mileage
New-era F3 engines make debut

Renault willing to supply more teams

Renault is open to expanding its Formula 1 engine supply deals beyond its current four teams for 2014 – but only as long as it does not hurt its chances of more success with works squad Red Bull. With the possibility of there being only three engine manufacturers after next year, Renault, Mercedes or Ferrari might have to increase their customer numbers.
Porsche ends works ALMS programme

Porsche is bringing to an end a factory involvement in the American Le Mans Series that stretches back to the start of the championship in 1999. The German manufacturer has announced that it is ending its works backing of the Flying Lizard Motorsports squad as it begins development of the next-generation, or 991-shape, 911 next year. This means that there will be no further development of the existing 997-style 911 GT3-RSR, which has been led by the Lizard team in the US

Ferrari: customer car could aid Italians

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has re-ignited the customer car debate by claiming it would help facilitate the return of an Italian presence to the Formula 1 grid. Di Montezemolo and Ferrari have been staunch advocates of the idea of third cars, saying as recently as November that their support was in the interests of the sport in general . Speaking to Gazzetta , the Ferrari president said it would also be an ideal way of promoting an Italian presence on the F1 grid
Prodrive loses Mini works status

Mini has confirmed that Prodrive’s involvement with the Mini World Rally programme has been reduced to the status of a works-supported private team. Black and gold for Lotus works teams

Lotus has announced that the teams it works with outside Formula 1 will switch to black and gold livery for 2012 to bring them in line with the grand prix squad’s image. Amid the dispute over the rights to use the Lotus name in F1 this year, Tony Fernandes’ Team Lotus used traditional Lotus green and gold, while the Group Lotus-backed Renault team ran in the black and gold colours made famous when the original Lotus F1 operation had John Player sponsorship. But the Group Lotus-sponsored teams in IndyCar, GP2 and GP3 all ran in green and gold.

Scuderia Toro Rosso has announced it has strengthened its technical team with the appointments of Jon Tomlinson and Luca Furbatto. Briton Tomlinson has joined the team’s Bicester wind tunnel staff, where he takes on the role of deputy head of aerodynamics, reporting to Nicolo Petrucci. Tomlinson was head of aerodynamics at the Williams team before announcing his exit from the team together with technical director Sam Michael earlier this year

Renault eyes engine deal extension

Renault has opened talks with its current engine partner to try and sort out a long-term extension of its deal that could boost efforts to bring a French driver back on to the Formula 1 grid. The Enstone-based outfit has a firm deal with Renault Sport until the end of 2013, and the team is interested in extending that partnership for when F1 switches to the new V6 power units the year after. Team principal Eric Boullier says that talks have begun with Renault about longer term plans, and admits they could play a part in efforts to boost the French presence in F1 – through both having a driver and a home race
Stoner secures pole between showers

Casey Stoner claimed his fifth pole position of the 2011 MotoGP season with a record lap in the very brief period of dry running that Italian Grand Prix qualifying allowed. The whole field came out on slicks on a drying track as soon as the session began, and by the halfway mark conditions were good enough for Honda rider Stoner to put in a 1m48.034s – narrowly beating Jorge Lorenzo’s practice mark to become the fastest ever MotoGP lap of Mugello. Shortly afterwards, the rain returned, starting as a persistent drizzle before getting harder, and that prevented anyone from improving.
Renault seeks to expand engine supply

Renault is to lodge a request with the FIA to expand its engine supply deal to four teams in 2012, AUTOSPORT has learned, as talks with potential new partners – including Williams – enters an advanced stage.
