Cudlin in doubt for Australian GP
October 15th, 2011
Damian Cudlin’s participation in the Australian Grand Prix is in doubt after his crash on Saturday. The Aspar rider, standing in for the injured Hector Barbera, was thrown out of the seat of his Ducati during final practice, landing heavily on his left hip and suffering an abrasion all the way around his left side from his buttock to his stomach. The Australian completed a handful of laps in qualifying but finished over six seconds of the pace.
Stoner takes Australian GP pole
October 15th, 2011
Casey Stoner stormed to his 11th pole position of the year by obliterating his rivals in qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island. The championship leader did not show his hand during the first half of the session, and, after running on at the Honda corner, looked as though he may have to settle for fourth spot when Marco Simoncelli knocked him off the front row with 17 minutes to go. But that was merely the home hero’s cue to unleash his raw pace; the Honda rider doing so by going fastest in 1m30.042s and then improving twice more to finish the session with a pole time of 1m29.975
Stoner still ahead in final practice
October 15th, 2011
Casey Stoner picked up where he left off on Friday afternoon by going fastest in the final practice session for the Australian Grand Prix by a huge margin. The Honda rider, who has an outside chance of wrapping up his second world title in front of his home crowd, hit the front with a little over half of the 45-minute session to go at Phillip Island in 1m31.279s and just kept getting faster. While that initial pace-setting time, and subsequent others, were set on hard tyres, a switch to a softer front Bridgestone allowed him to improve his speed considerably in a session that proved slower than the previous day’s due to high winds at the track
Stoner flies but crashes in FP1
October 14th, 2011
Casey Stoner laid down the foundations for a potential world championship-winning weekend in front of his home crowd as he set the pace in opening practice for the Australian MotoGP. Stoner needs to leave Phillip Island with a 50-point advantage over his nearest rival – reigning champion Jorge Lorenzo – and if he wins with the Spaniard lower than third the Australian will regain the crown he lost to Valentino Rossi in 2008
Capirossi to return for Australia
October 12th, 2011
Loris Capirossi will return to the Pramac Ducati line-up for Phillip Island this weekend – but has warned that he will not be at peak fitness for his last MotoGP appearance in Australia. The Italian – who will retire from racing at the end of the 2011 season – dislocated his right shoulder when he collided with Toni Elias at Aragon last month, exacerbating injuries he had previously suffered in a practice crash at Assen
Cudlin to stand in for Barbera
October 7th, 2011
Damian Cudlin will get a second MotoGP opportunity in his home grand prix in Australia – standing in for Hector Barbera at Aspar Ducati. Barbera sustained a fractured collarbone when he crashed early in last weekend’s Motegi race, and has now been ruled out of the Phillip Island event. Cudlin had made his MotoGP debut in Japan after being given a surprise call-up to deputise for the injured Loris Capirossi at Pramac Ducati
‘Buzzing’ Cudlin hopes to close gap
September 30th, 2011
Damian Cudlin says his aim for his first MotoGP weekend is just to keep chipping away at the gap to the regular riders. The Australian, who currently races in Germany’s IDM Supersport series, was a surprise choice to sit in for the injured Loris Capirossi at Pramac Ducati for this weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix. Despite being totally unfamiliar with MotoGP machinery and having never tried the Motegi track before, Cudlin got down to within 4.5 seconds of pacesetter Dani Pedrosa in practice today.
Stoner tops first practice in Japan
September 30th, 2011
Casey Stoner made another extremely strong start to a MotoGP weekend as he led a works Honda one-two in opening Motegi practice. Championship leader Stoner’s 1m47.393s put him on top just beyond the halfway point of the session, after his team-mate Andrea Dovizioso and Gresini Honda’s Marco Simoncelli had briefly had turns in front. Stoner then finished the morning by improving to a 1m47.289s to cement his advantage
Marc VDS tests Suter MotoGP bike
November 27th, 2010
Leading Moto2 team Marc VDS has shaken down the Suter-BMW bike designed in preparation for MotoGP’s 2012 rules. MotoGP will allow production-based 1000cc engines from the ’12 season as part of a package of changes intended to increase grid sizes, and top Moto2 constructor Suter and Marc VDS have been working on a BMW-powered machine with the new regulations in mind. The bike was shaken down over two days of running at Jerez this week, with a planned third day prevented by rain
