Jenson Button has revealed the McLaren MP4-28 will look very different when the upgraded car hits the track during practice for the Spanish Grand Prix. After struggling in the first four races of the year, McLaren will trial the first phase of a major series of upgrades in free practice at Barcelona, with further packages scheduled for introduction in the following races. The 2009 world champion said that the changes will be obvious to the naked eye, although does not expect the new parts to transform the McLaren into a race-winning machine yet

Robert Kubica has been a dominant leader on most rally outings so far – including his spectacular European Rally Championship debut last month – but that will not be the case when he joins the World Rally Championship in Portugal this weekend. The 2008 Canadian Grand Prix winner will be competing in the secondary WRC2 category in a car no match for the top-class World Rally cars. In an exclusive analysis for AUTOSPORT, Citroen technical director Xavier Mestelan-Pinon explains the differences between Kubica’s DS3 RRC and the DS3 WRC that will be fighting for outright victory in Faro with Mikko Hirvonen and Dani Sordo.

Daniel Ricciardo – 13th: “Coming into qualifying today, if I’d been told I could sign on the dotted line for thirteenth, I’d have taken it. It’s a decent result and we haven’t been that far up the time sheets all weekend in practice. Looking at it that way, thirteenth is quite good, but in Q1, we were quite competitive and only one hundredth of a second from the top ten

Fernando Alonso – 4th/4th: “Today, the car worked well in all conditions and that is very good news for us. This circuit is more representative than Australia for evaluating the car’s performance and so it was important to understand here today if the positive feelings from the winter were not just an illusion. On my lap on the Medium tyres, I did not have the right balance, otherwise I could have managed to improve, as I did on the Hards and I could probably have been on the “front row.” Now we must see how tomorrow goes, when it could rain at any moment and on a track where tyre degradation is much higher than in Melbourne

Teams predict that backmarkers will play a key part in the United States Grand Prix, with the high-speed section from Turns 3 to 9 allowing little room to overtake. Several times during practice, faster cars became caught behind slower traffic in this section, with Sergio Perez hitting Charles Pic at Turn 7 on Saturday morning. Pedro de la Rosa, whose HRT was almost 5.5 seconds off Sebastian Vettel’s pole position time in qualifying, believes that the speed differential will be difficult to manage in that section of the track.
