Jourdain misses the cut on Bump Day

Rahal Letterman Lanigan will be left with just its two full-time drivers Graham Rahal and James Jakes in the Indianapolis 500 after its third entry for Michel Jourdain Jr was the surprise Bump Day casualty. Leaders bemused by WTCC qualifying

Yvan Muller, Tom Chilton and Rob Huff were all left bemused by their rivals’ tactics as World Touring Car qualifying ended in laughable fashion at the Salzburgring. Muller was on provisional pole, with Chilton and Huff second and third, when the field – led by Chilton – headed out for one final flyer. With ample time on the board, drivers elected to fight for the perfect slipstream position, worth around four tenths of a second, behind Chilton.

Bacheta wins reversed-grid race

Reigning Formula 2 champion Luciano Bacheta claimed victory in a delayed and crash-strewn reversed grid Auto GP race in Marrakech. Over half the field was eliminated in accidents, but polesitter Bacheta kept a level head and avoided contact in a wheel-to-wheel battle with Andrea Roda to take his maiden Auto GP win. Roda exercised caution in his duel with Bacheta, but was called in to serve a drive-through penalty for his part in a race-ending collision with early leader Antonio Spavone.

Casey Stoner began his bid for a sixth straight home MotoGP victory in ominous fashion by blitzing the field in first practice at Phillip Island. Yamaha’s championship leader Jorge Lorenzo was the only rider able to get within one second of the Australian, while the session’s two slowest riders were outside the 107 per cent mark. The Australian, who admitted his injuries had worsened coming into his home track, wasted little time getting up to speed.
