Hamilton sure tyre woes will be solved

Lewis Hamilton says no stone will be left unturned when he visits the Mercedes factory later this week for a brainstorming session to cure the team’s tyre woes. The former world champion has a previously scheduled promotional appearance for a sponsor in Florida first, but he believes the trip to Brackley is now an essential after his disappointing Spanish Grand Prix.
Ralph Sanchez: 1948-2013

US race promoter Ralph Sanchez, who also played a key role in re-igniting Emerson Fittipaldi’s career, has died at the age of 64 after a long illness. Cuban-born Rafael, or Ralph, Sanchez was the architect of the Miami Grand Prix street race in the early 1980s, the Tamiami Park CART Indycar event later in the decade and then the Homestead oval to the south of the Florida city in the ’90s. Sanchez should also be credited with bringing Fittipaldi back to the cockpit, more than three years after he had retired from Formula 1.

Castroneves: Win a vital boost

Helio Castroneves has admitted that his win in Sunday’s IndyCar curtain-raiser in St Petersburg was important for both himself and his Penske team after enduring the worst season of his career last year. The three-time Indianapolis 500 winner came into the weekend off the back of the first winless season of his career last year. His last victory had come at Motegi in 2010, and he said that opening his 2012 campaign with a win would be an important boost.

Hunter-Reay concerned by kerbs

Andretti Autosport driver Ryan Hunter-Reay has expressed concern over changes that have been made to the kerbs at the St Petersburg street circuit ahead of this weekend’s opening round of the 2012 IndyCar season. The cars are yet to run on the Florida track, with the first practice session scheduled to start on Friday afternoon, but Hunter-Reay has suggested that the reprofiled kerbs could be too aggressive for the new Dallara DW12s, meaning that some cornering speeds will be lowered. “In the past here, we’ve been able to run over [the kerbs],” Hunter-Reay said.
Audi stays on top at Sebring

Audi continued its dominance of the Sebring 12 Hours weekend by locking out the top three positions in the second practice session on Thursday. Having gone fastest in the morning session, Romain Dumas put the #2 R18 turbodiesel he shares with Timo Bernhard and Loic Duval at the top of the timesheets again, only to be knocked off by 0.478s by Andre Lotterer in the sister car. Allmendinger hails ‘drive of his life’

AJ Allmendinger believes that he produced the best drive of his life to anchor Michael Shank Racing to victory at the Daytona 24 Hours. The NASCAR regular, who shared his Riley-Ford with Justin Wilson, Oswaldo Negri Jr and John Pew at the 50th anniversary running of the Florida enduro, was in contention for the win throughout the race. Allmendinger drove the final three hours of the race under constant pressure from Ryan Dalziel’s pole-sitting Starworks Riley-Ford as the gap between the pair fluctuated between three and 11 seconds due to a combination of traffic and caution periods
McNish, Luhr pair up for Daytona

NASCAR working on tandem drafts

Drivers and NASCAR officials say they are still looking for ways to limit tandem racing at restrictor plate tracks following a Sprint Cup Series test at Daytona on Tuesday. Six drivers ran on the 2.5-mile high banks trying different restrictor plates, spoilers and suspension settings among other possible solutions as NASCAR hopes to at least limit the two-car drafting that has prevailed this year both at the Florida track and Talladega.

Successful driver and team owner Roy Winkelmann passed away in Florida early on July 17. He was 81. Winkelmann, a successful driver in North American sportscars during the early 1960s, was best known as the owner of Roy Winkelmann Racing, one of the most successful Formula 2 teams of the 1960s.
Audi tests ‘evolution 2′ R18

Audi has completed the first test of what it referred to as the ‘evolution 2′ version of its new R18 Le Mans car. The closed-cockpit machine ran at Sebring this week following the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup-opening 12 Hours last weekend. All 10 works Audi drivers took part in the test, which also featured an old-style R15 TDI for comparison purposes.
