VW resists drivers’ push for upgrades
May 8th, 2013
Volkswagen team principal Jost Capito says he will not be pressured by his drivers into delivering upgrades to the Polo R WRC before they are ready. The Polo suffered further rear differential and handbrake issues on last week’s Rally Argentina. A revised specification of handbrake operation – hydraulic instead of pneumatic – was running on Andreas Mikkelsen’s third car, but it will not be included on the points-scoring Polos until it is absolutely ready
Toro Rosso planning switch to Renault
February 5th, 2013
Toro Rosso is planning to make the switch to Renault engines next season, although it has not signed a deal with the French car manufacturer yet.
Canada Friday quotes: Caterham
June 8th, 2012
Heikki Kovalainen – 16th: “First I want to say thank you to the team for doing a great job and getting the car fixed and ready for most of FP2. I made a mistake on the exit of turn 9 and hit the wall, obviously doing some pretty substantial damage to the car but, thankfully, not to the chassis. As soon as we got it back to the garage the guys started work on rebuilding it so to get that job done and giving me FP2 track time was a very good achievement.

Ford: Hirvonen’s error caused crash
July 29th, 2011
Ford has revealed that Mikko Hirvonen’s first-stage accident on Rally Finland was caused by driver error. The team spent much of last night checking through the data from the accident, which has left the Finn 36th overall and more than two minutes off the lead, and could find nothing amiss with the engine. Hirvonen’s initial report was that he had lost power from the engine, making it impossible for him to get through the corner
Wilson praises Fiesta RRC
July 13th, 2011
Matthew Wilson has praised the introduction of the Ford Fiesta Regional Rally Car after testing the new car in Cumbria. The Fiesta RRC is essentially a Fiesta World Rally Car with a smaller rear wing and a smaller air intake restrictor on the turbo. Stobart M-Sport WRC driver Wilson has done the development work on the new car, which is aimed at FIA Regional Rally Championships in Europe, Africa, Asia-Pacific and the Middle-East, where WRC-spec machines are not permitted
Flying Wilson troubled by gear issue
June 17th, 2011
Matthew Wilson ended stage one of the Acropolis Rally frustrated at a gearshift problem that cost him a chance to challenge for the lead of the event. The Stobart Ford driver completed the 23.6-kilometre Thiva stage in a promising fourth place overall, just 6.2 seconds behind early leader Petter Solberg as the likes of Sebastien Loeb and Mikko Hirvonen struggled with running higher up the road order in the dusty conditions. But Wilson said he had been compromised by an issue with the flat-shift gearchange system, which was cutting the engine for too long on every shift.
Off-throttle diffuser ban plans still on
June 11th, 2011
The FIA has told teams that it is not going to waiver from its decision to ban off-throttle use of blown diffusers this year, with it set on outlawing the systems from next month’s British Grand Prix.
Todt says new engines could be delayed
June 7th, 2011
FIA president Jean Todt has confirmed that he may be willing to consider postponing the introduction of new 1.6-litre turbo engines in Formula 1 from 2013, even though Renault’s future in the sport is said to depend on it. The FIA announced last week that the door was open on a deal to delay the switch in F1 power-units providing there was unanimous support from stakeholders about the situation. Although Renault is determined to push ahead with the change of rules, other manufacturers like Ferrari, Cosworth and Mercedes-Benz are less keen on making the expensive switch.
Rossi optimistic of improved pace
May 11th, 2011
Valentino Rossi is optimistic of improved pace from the Ducati Desmosedici GP11 at the French Grand Prix, following a positive test at Estoril last week. After finishing in a season’s best fourth place at the Portuguese Grand Prix, Rossi sampled an upgraded bike at the circuit and went fifth quickest in the test. He reported a front end that was more sensitive to set-up changes and smoother power delivery from the engine, and believes that both factors will make the Italian squad more competitive at Le Mans

Wilson impressed by Ostberg’s pace
August 20th, 2010
Ford team principal Malcolm Wilson has admitted he has already been impressed by Mads Ostberg’s pace on this week’s Rally Germany. The Norwegian driver is making his debut in a Ford Fiesta S2000 on this week’s Trier-based event, having only ever previously competed in a Subaru Impreza WRC
Japan Saturday quotes: Red Bull
October 3rd, 2009
Sebastian Vettel – 1st: “I did my best not to get distracted today; it was a strange session with a lot of incidents. The most important thing is that all the drivers are okay. In qualifying, it’s usual that you’re looking for the limit, as it’s about just one fast lap time, but Turn 9, where the people went off, is quite difficult.
