FIA: tyre tweaks can only be for safety

Pirelli’s planned mid-season Formula 1 tyre tweaks are set to be much smaller than originally anticipated after the FIA ruled that changes will only be allowed on safety grounds. Sources have revealed that the governing body has told Pirelli that it is happy to accept – and is indeed keen for – alterations necessary to prevent a repeat of the rear tyre delaminations that have struck at the last few events. But, in a blow to outfits like Red Bull hoping further tweaks would help them overcome tyre difficulties they have faced, the FIA has made it clear it will not tolerate further changes aimed at reducing the number of pitstops or decreasing degradation.

Sebastian Vettel put Red Bull firmly in control of the second morning of Formula 1′s first pre-season test at Barcelona. The reigning world champion ended more than half a second clear of the chasing pack, having improved his own benchmark several times over the course of the morning’s running.

Busch apologises for radio outrage

Kyle Busch has apologised to Toyota for his criticism of the Japanese manufacturers’ engines during last weekend’s NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Dover. The Joe Gibbs Racing driver made some strong remarks on his radio following the conclusion of last Sunday’s event, where he was forced to make an extra stop for fuel with 11 laps to go, having dominated the event and leading 302 of 400 scheduled laps. Busch, who narrowly missed the Chase this year, eventually finished seventh and a lap behind winner Brad Keselowski, who stretched his fuel mileage further than his rivals to claim his second victory during the play-offs.
Pommer bounces back with pole

Markus Pommer secured pole position for the second Formula 2 race of the weekend at Hungaroring, with a blistering lap towards the end of the qualifying session. After the frustration of a boost-valve failure forcing him into the pits at the end of the formation lap on Saturday – robbing him of a front row start – the German driver ended the session 0.37 seconds ahead of race one winner Alex Fontana .
Dovizioso hits out at detractors

Andrea Dovizioso has decried what he believes is a general lack of recognition for his abilities within the MotoGP community. The Italian has suffered a string of disappointments in the past two seasons, including losing his works Honda ride at the end of 2011 and losing out to compatriot Valentino Rossi in the fight for a 2013 works Yamaha seat .
Ferrari ‘must forget Spa frustration’

Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali says his team must not carry the frustration of Fernando Alonso’s non-finish in Belgium into this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix. Alonso had his first retirement of the year at Spa, after being caught up in a multi-car accident that was triggered when Romain Grosjean moved across on Lewis Hamilton at the start.
McLaren: Hamilton backed wing call

Hanninen leads, Mikkelsen goes off

Juho Hanninen holds a 26.8-second lead over seven-time event winner Freddy Loix in the Ypres Rally after Andreas Mikkelsen went off the road on the opening evening. Skoda driver Hanninen has led the event, round six of the 2012 Intercontinental Rally Challenge, from the outset, steadily edging away from Mikkelsen (Skoda UK) through the opening stages. The gap was up to 11s before Mikkelsen slid into a ditch on stage five, dropping a minute and falling to fifth place
Button unimpressed with Kovalainen

Jenson Button felt Heikki Kovalainen ‘got the balance wrong’ as the Caterham driver held off Button’s McLaren for most of the Monaco Grand Prix. Kovalainen got up to 13th amid the startline crash, while Button had to go wide to avoid Kamui Kobayashi’s flying Sauber and found himself behind the Caterham.
Lotus expects to stay with frontrunners

Lotus is confident it has the drivers and car to be quick at every track from now on, after finally delivering its first podium finish of the season in Bahrain. Despite having shown promising speed in the first few races of the campaign it had failed to finish in the top three until last weekend, when Kimi Raikkonen and Romain Grosjean both secured podium spots. Trackside operations director Alan Permane reckons that the result is proof that Lotus has now got its act together and is ready to show that its E20 can repeat that form at other races.
Brawn rubbishes DRS cost claims

Costa seeking for drive after setback

Merhi: Talent more valuable than cash

Meeke criticises rally organisers

Kris Meeke has criticised the organisers of Rally GB for the decision to run Thursday afternoon’s Clocaenog stage in fading light. Meeke was annoyed at what he saw as the unfair advantage the drivers at the front of the field enjoyed driving through the event’s opening stage in brighter conditions. The Mini driver was running 12th on the road and began the test 24 minutes later than Sebastien Loeb, the first car through.
Spies says second still satisfying

Ben Spies said he still took a lot of satisfaction from second place at Valencia even though Casey Stoner denied him victory in the MotoGP season finale by just 0.015 seconds. Spies fought through from fourth to catch and pass Stoner for the lead as drizzle intensified in the closing stages. But with victory seemingly in the bag for the Yamaha rider, Stoner got a better exit from the final corner of the race and edged his Honda ahead as they took the chequered flag

Peterhansel blames own mistakes

Stephane Peterhansel says it was his own errors that caused him to fall away from the fight for Dakar Rally victory, after coming home only fourth in this year’s event. X-Raid BMW driver Peterhansel, who has won the rally six times on a motorbike and three times in the car category, was battling for the lead with Volkswagen’s Carlos Sainz and Nasser Al-Attiyah for the first week before hitting a string of problems. Repeated punctures proved particularly costly, but Peterhansel said things began to go wrong when he missed a way point on stage six and lost several minutes trying to get back on the course.
