O’Young returns to Le Mans

Touring car and sportscar driver Darryl O’Young is returning to the Le Mans 24 Hours after a four-year absence with the AF Corse Ferrari team. The Canadian-born Chinese driver, who is racing with the ROAL BMW team in this year’s World Touring Car Championship, has signed to drive one of AF’s GTE Am class Ferrari 458 Italias in the French enduro on June 22/23.
Le Mans to recreate original layout

A section of the original layout of the Le Mans 24 Hours circuit will be recreated as part of the 90th anniversary celebrations of the French endurance classic. The roads at the Pontlieue Hairpin, the most northerly point of the first layout of the Circuit de la Sarthe used from 1923-1928, will be returned to their 1920s glory for the week of this year’s 24 Hours in June.
Jarvis gets Phoenix Blancpain drive

Sebring 12 Hours winner Oliver Jarvis will return to the Phoenix Racing squad for this year’s Blancpain Endurance Series. Audi factory driver Jarvis has been placed with Phoenix, with which he raced in the DTM in 2008-09, for the five-round BES, which includes the Spa 24 Hours in July.
Loeb’s team to remain in the ELMS

Le Mans seeks to name greatest cars

Endurance racing fans are being called upon to help name the greatest cars in the history of the Le Mans 24 Hours in its 90th anniversary year in 2013. The Automobile Club de l’Ouest, the organiser of the 24 Hours, has set up an online poll for fans of the great race to vote for a car from each of the 10 decades of the event. A 10-man panel, including top drivers, team managers and journalists, will then choose between the winners of each decade to come up with a top-10 list of the cars that best embody the legend of Le Mans.
Bourdais rejoins Starworks for Daytona

Sebastien Bourdais will rejoin the Starworks team for the 2013 Daytona 24 Hours. The four-time Champ Car champion and Le Mans 24 Hours podium finisher is set to team up with Ryan Dalziel, Alex Popow and Allan McNish in the Starworks Riley-Ford. Bourdais contested three mid-season Grand-Am races with Starworks last year, winning at Indianapolis alongside Dalziel and Enzo Potolicchio.
Le Mans date moved back

The 2013 Le Mans 24 Hours has been put back a week to 22-23 June. Race organiser the Automobile Club de l’Ouest had originally announced that next year’s endurance classic would take place on 15-16 June.
Gene steps in for Bernhard at Le Mans

Marc Gene will replace Timo Bernhard in Audi’s Le Mans 24 Hours line-up after the team’s 2010 winner failed to regain his fitness in time following a testing accident at Sebring in March. Gene, who also won Le Mans alongside Alex Wurz and David Brabham driving for Audi’s former turbodiesel rival Peugeot in 2009, was drafted into Audi’s squad when it became clear Bernard would need a long recovery period for his vertebrae injury
Pescarolo delays debut of LMP1 car

Sportscar legend Henri Pescarolo has delayed the debut of his new LMP1 contender until the Le Mans 24 Hours. His team had planned to race its new Pescarolo-Judd 03, which is based around the monocoque and suspension from last year’s Aston Martin AMR-One, at the Spa 6 Hours on May 5. As predicted by AUTOSPORT, it will now not be ready in time for the second round of the FIA World Endurance Championship, which means Pescarolo Team will be forced to give the car its race debut in the 24 Hours in June
Audi heads 2012 Le Mans entry list

Audi heads the entry for this year’s Le Mans 24 Hours with a four-car assault that will include two hybrid versions of its R18 coupe. The German manufacturer has opted to split its entry between its new diesel-electric hybrid, which has been testing since last autumn, and a conventional turbodiesel version of the R18. Audi Sport boss Wolfgang Ullrich said: “The first test results [of the hybrid] are very encouraging and we are intrigued to see just how this technology performs on the race track at Le Mans
Dome back to Le Mans with Pescarolo

Dome is to return to the Le Mans 24 Hours in conjunction with the Pescarolo team. The Japanese constructor is producing a heavily-updated version of its Judd-powered S102 coupe that raced at Le Mans in 2008 for an assault on this year’s race and the Spa FIA World Endurance Championship race in May
Kimber-Smith wants LMP1 seat

Tom Kimber-Smith is chasing an LMP1 drive at June’s Le Mans 24 Hours, after being left out of Greaves Motorsport’s LMP2 line-up. The 27-year-old Briton was the star driver for the team in 2011, helping it to a Le Mans class victory and the Le Mans Series LMP2 title.
WEC adds Bahrain round

The new FIA World Endurance Championship will be fought out over eight rounds next year. The world championship, which has grown out of the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup, is effectively increasing from seven to eight races with the addition of an event in the Middle East.
United Autosports to run LMP2 car

United Autosports will enter the prototype ranks at Petit Le Mans in October after securing a deal to run an LMP2 Pescarolo in conjunction with OAK Racing. Former grand prix driver and Le Mans 24 Hours winner Stefan Johansson will race the car with Mark Patterson and team co-owner Zak Brown at the 1000km event at Road Atlanta – which will count as a round of both the American Le Mans Series and the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup. Richard Dean, who co-owns the team with Brown, said that the entry marks the first step in its plans to compete at the Le Mans 24 Hours in the future
Chrysler evaluating GT return

Chrysler is evaluating a return to international GT competition with the next generation of Viper, according to this week’s AUTOSPORT magazine. The US giant, which took a hat-trick of GTS class wins at the Le Mans 24 Hours from 1998-2000 with the original Viper Coupe, has began to look at the possibility of taking on BMW, Ferrari, Chevrolet and Porsche in the GTE category

Highcroft expects to defend title

Reigning American Le Mans Series champion team Highcroft Racing says it is close to committing to a title defence, after announcing that it will definitely contest the Sebring 12 Hours and Le Mans 24 Hours with the latest LMP1 HPD. Highcroft’s plans for 2011 had been uncertain over the winter, with lead driver David Brabham admitting he was keeping his options open in case Duncan Dayton’s squad was unable to put a programme together for the season
