Sainz gets extra FR3.5 outing at Spa

Carlos Sainz Jr will stay with Zeta Corse in Formula Renault 3.5 for this weekend’s round at Spa after scoring points on his debut in Monaco on Sunday. The Red Bull-backed GP3 racer initially signed a one-off deal with the Italian team for last weekend so he could gain experience of the Monte Carlo circuit. However, that deal has now been extended after a weekend where the Spaniard spent most of the event running at the sharp end on his way to finishing sixth .
Toro Rosso: poor start won’t set tone

Toro Rosso still has the potential to catch the front of the Formula 1 midfield, according to technical director James Key, despite its poor start to the 2013 season. Team principal Franz Tost set the ambitious target of finishing sixth in the constructors’ championship when the STR8 was launched in February.
Beatriz IndyCar drive safe until Indy

Ana Beatriz will remain in the second Dale Coyne Racing car until at least the Indy 500, the team confirmed today. The Brazilian joined the team on a part-time basis ahead of the season-opener at St Petersburg two weeks ago, where she finished 22nd. Although she has 23 IndyCar starts to her credit, this weekend will mark her first race at the Alabama circuit.

Lauda insists Lowe no threat to Brawn

Ross Brawn’s immediate future as team principal at Mercedes is not in doubt, insists its chairman Niki Lauda, despite Paddy Lowe planning to switch from McLaren. Speculation that Brawn will be stepping down from his role sooner rather than later grew after it emerged that McLaren technical director Lowe has agreed to join Mercedes at the start of next year.
Hamilton crashes on Mercedes debut

Lewis Hamilton’s first proper day of Formula 1 testing with Mercedes got off to a bad start on Wednesday when he crashed the team’s new W04. The Briton, who has joined the team from McLaren, had been third quickest in the morning when, after 15 laps, he ran off the track at the Dry Sack hairpin. Television footage of the incident showed he had locked up in the braking area of the corner, before skipping across the gravel trap and nosing into the barriers.

Visoiu switches to MW Arden after contesting last year’s championship with Jenzer, showing promising form at times and finishing second in race two at Barcelona.

Munoz set for 2013 Indy 500 debut

Dave Newsham believes he can win the opening round of the British Touring Car Championship at Brands Hatch on Sunday after taking his first series pole position. Former Renault Clio Cup champion Newsham stepped up to the BTCC last season. He joined the Team ES Racing squad for 2012 and put its turbocharged Vauxhall Vectra on pole earlier this afternoon with a time of 48.483s

Gascoyne gets expanded Caterham role

Mark Smith has taken over control of the Caterham F1 team’s technical department after Mike Gascoyne’s was promoted to chief technical officer of the entire Caterham Group. Gascoyne, who joined the team before it made its Formula 1 debut in 2010, will now be responsible for proposing, supporting and coordinating technical initiatives in Caterham Group’s F1 and GP2 team as well as Caterham Cars, Caterham Composites and Caterham Technology & Innovation. Smith, who as the team’s technical director, takes over the day-to-day control of the technical side of the F1 team
