Johnny Cecotto Jr will start round seven of the GP2 Series in Monaco from pole position after topping his qualifying session for odd-numbered cars. But Arden team-mate Mitch Evans came within 0.016 seconds of toppling him in the second group. The sessions were split in two, for odd- and even-numbered cars, to avoid the crashes that have occurred in recent years with all 26 cars on track simultaneously.

Sam Bird set the fastest time in the half-hour practice session for the fourth race weekend of the GP2 Series season on the streets of Monaco. Using the super-soft tyre, Bird lapped the Principality in 1m21.512s, leading a Russian Time one-two ahead of team-mate Tom Dillmann, who was 0.057s slower.

Stefano Coletti extended his points lead in the GP2 Series with his second victory of the season in the sprint race at Barcelona on Sunday morning. Rapax driver Coletti stormed into the lead from fifth on the grid, but did it the hard way – banging wheels with poleman Johnny Cecotto Jr’s Arden car at Turn 1. They ran side by side all the way through Turns 2 and 3, before Coletti finally pulled clear, with Cecotto bearing the scars of the contact on his left-hand sidepod

Reigning Formula Renault 3.5 champion Robin Frijns gave Hilmer Motorsport its first-ever GP2 Series victory in the Barcelona feature race, making it the second race in succession that a new-for-2013 team has won. Frijns and his team executed a perfect race strategy, switching from the soft tyres to the hard compound at the first opportunity on lap six. Thanks to a fast stop, this gave him track position over everyone save for poleman, and early leader, Marcus Ericsson of DAMS

Felipe Nasr set the fastest time by over three quarters of a second in the free practice session for the third race weekend of the GP2 Series season at Barcelona. Track conditions were dry following the first Formula 1 session , and conditions were ideal for quick times from the off. Jolyon Palmer was first to set the fastest time for Carlin, soon toppled by reigning Formula Renault 3.5 champion Robin Frijns (Hilmer).

Fabio Leimer won the Bahrain GP2 Series feature race at the Sakhir circuit, the second round of the Formula 1 feeder championship. The Racing Engineering driver won from pole position, but his near one-second advantage from qualifying did not quite translate into the easy victory run he might have expected

Stefano Coletti will start the opening race of the GP2 Series in Malaysia from pole position after a thrilling qualifying session on Friday in which the top three were covered by eight-thousandths of a second. Coletti set his 1m44.280s best lap relatively early on his second run on the soft-compound tyre, and sat out the last eight minutes of the Sepang session to watch his rivals attempt to knock him off the top of the times. The first to come close was Carlin’s Felipe Nasr, but his best effort was 0.008 seconds slower after a lock-up into the final hairpin and a snatch of oversteer on the way out

James Calado lived up to his billing as GP2 championship favourite by setting the pace in the season’s opening practice session in Malaysia. Calado’s early 1m45.403s lap put his ART entry a scant 0.019 seconds ahead of Rapax’s Simon Trummer. Newcomer team Russian Time got off to an encouraging start with Tom Dillmann going third quickest

The GP2 field for the 2013 season opener has been completed by newcomer Hilmer Motorsport signing Conor Daly and Pal Varhaug for this weekend. Both drivers are race winners in GP3, with Varhaug winning the championship’s inaugural round in 2010 and Daly taking a victory on his way to sixth in the championship with ART last year

Jolyon Palmer will race with the Carlin team in the 2013 GP2 series, the British squad said on Monday. The 21-year-old from Horsham made his debut in the championship in 2011 with Arden, before moving to iSport for the 2012 season. He scored his breakthrough win at Monaco this year, finishing 11th in the standings.
