WRC poised for crunch FIA meeting

The FIA is presenting its plans for the immediate future of the World Rally Championship in Paris this week. Led by its rally director Jarmo Mahonen, the FIA has joined forces with WRC promoters Red Bull Media House and Sportsman Media and British sports consultancy firm Portas to produce a document outlining the way forward for the series. For the first time this season Fernando Alonso goes into a grand prix weekend as favourite, according to the players of the Castrol EDGE Grand Prix Predictor. The Ferrari driver, who scored his first victory of the year in China last weekend, is currently the man deemed most likely to be the first to score multiple victories in 2013, with 34 per cent of users selecting him compared to 33 per cent choosing world championship leader Sebastian Vettel. The Red Bull driver has been the overwhelming favourite going in to the first three races.

Toyota claimed a second FIA World Endurance Championship victory in five attempts in a thrilling battle with Audi at Fuji. After six hours of racing, Alex Wurz, Nicolas Lapierre and Kazuki Nakajima took the win aboard their TS030 HYBRID by just 11 seconds from the Audi R18 e-tron quattro driven by Andre Lotterer, Benoit Treluyer and Marcel Fassler. Charles Pic will incur a 10-place grid penalty for the Korean Grand Prix after his Marussia team decided to change his Cosworth engine overnight on Friday. It is Pic’s ninth engine change of the season, with 2012 regulations stating that drivers must only use eight units through the year. “It is also appropriate at this stage to say that we plan to fit a new engine to Charles’ car this evening in the knowledge that, as his ninth engine of the season, we will incur a 10-place grid penalty on Sunday,” said team principal Jon Booth.
