iRacer Profile: Brian V Macklin
by David Phillips on April 13th, 2013
When Brian V Macklin goes sim-racing nowadays you could say the fix is in. That’s because he favors the fixed setup versions of his favorite series, be it NASCAR Class A, B or C. Why not? With 29 wins in 97 starts in the Gen6, Chevy COT and Chevy Silverado in Season 1 – so far — the iRacing setups seem to be working for him . . . just as the generic iRacing package did in 2012 when the Harrington, Delaware sim-racer captured the overall National series title on the strength of six wins and 18 top fives. But while Macklin’s clearly favors the fixed oval packages, it doesn’t mean he’s afraid to play with the settings . . . or turn right as well as left. In fact [...]
Get to Know: J.D Laird
by David Ifeguni on April 1st, 2013
J.D Laird, a 25 year old from Anaheim, CA, may have accomplished a great deal in his sim-racing career — but he has accomplished far more in his painting career, which is the focus of this week’s Get to Know. Even though you may not have known it, you have probably seen some of Laird’s paint schemes at some point in time. If you watch the NASCAR iRacing.com Series World Championship races, then you’ll see drivers like two time series champion Ray Alfalla, Byron Daley and Brian Schoenburg sporting cars painted by Laird. Even if you don’t watch the NiSWC (which you should), you’ve probably seen one of Laird’s paint schemes run in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series last year or this year. This year, he developed the paint scheme [...]
iRacer Profile – John-Michael Shenette
by David Phillips on March 10th, 2012
John-Michael Shenette has one foot grounded real world racing, the other in sim racing. Or is it the other way around? For in the case of the Connecticut’s Shenette, the boundaries between the real and virtual racing are blurred. And that’s a good thing. A former iRacing.com marketing intern, past Late Model and SK Modified divisional champion, Shenette assists in the administration of the iRacing.com DWC. He is also president of the Short Track Pro Cup Series (www.stprocup.com), iRacing’s longest-running league, and creator of Dynasty Motorsports. On the other hand (or foot, as it were), Shenette has nearly two decades of real world racing under his belt, having raced Super Late Models, Trucks, Pro Stocks, IMCA Modifieds, karts andquarter midgets, with plans to compete in PASS North races and the [...]
Illini Mighty at Michigan
by Tim Terry on August 18th, 2011
Illinois sim racer Brandon Buchberger flexed his muscle during Week Two as he took the overall win in the NASCAR iRacing.com Class C Series (NiCCS) at Michigan International Speedway. Over 2000 sim racers took to the track, but it was a win on August 14th that put Buchberger over the top for the victory. Buchberger bagged the win to take home 236 points. With an sof rating pegged at a 3770, the winner led just seven laps in the highly competitive race which featured a total of 21 lead changes over the 80 lap duration. The race was slowed by six yellow flags and saw Justin Fuller come home in second, ahead of Kwame Adjei, Carl Taylor and Ryan Ameen. Justin Brooks led the race with five laps to go [...]
iRacer Profile: Nick Ottinger
by David Phillips on June 18th, 2011
OK, OK. If you’re a regular (or even irregular) reader of inRacingNews, you’re already familiar with Nick Ottinger’s name. After all, as a serial winner in the NASCAR iRacing.com Street Stock Series, he’s a staple of Jordan Hightower’s weekly reports. The Carolina Club sim racer is also very active — and competitive — in Legends Cup and NASCAR Class A and B, where he got out of the gate fast with four top fives and a couple of wins in the early weeks of the season. But would you have guessed that Ottinger’s most recently read book was Of Mice & Men? Or that one of this confessed oval junkie’s favorite tracks on iRacing is Infineon Raceway? Read on . . . Q: How long have you been sim racing [...]
Black Stripes Pave the Way at Charlotte
May 31st, 2011
You would think that the NASCAR iRacing.com Class C Series (NiCCS) resembled the NASCAR iRacing.com Series World Championship (NiSWC) division when looking at the results from the third week of racing! Week Three for the NiCCS took the trucks to Charlotte Motor Speedway, a popular stop among the racer in the series. Over 2000 sim racers took to the track this week and in the end, it was two NiSWC drivers who took top honors in the series. Josh Berry became the overall winner at Charlotte for the NiCCS when he topped a 4426 sof race on May 21st and, in turn, took away 277 points. Berry led the “black stripe” podium as he raced to the line on lap 90 ahead of fellow NiSWC drivers Brad Wright and Jordan [...]

iRacer Cassill Takes Over for Elliott
by David Phillips on March 24th, 2011
iRacer and NASCAR driver Landon Cassill will take over driving duties for Phoenix Racing beginning at Auto Club Speedway this weekend. Cassill, 21, replaces 1988 NASCAR Cup champion Bill Elliott, who started the first four races of the season in the No. 09 Chevrolet. “Hopefully, I can do good enough to keep the car in the top 35 (in points) and even in the top 25,” Cassill said. For more details, see Lee Spencer’s story here: http://bleacherreport.com/tb/b8DqY
Trevor Bayne First Drove Daytona on iRacing.com
by Steve Potter on February 23rd, 2011
It was standing room only in the Daytona media center this past Sunday afternoon when Trevor Bayne walked in following his dramatic win in the Daytona 500. But in the same room a year earlier, just a handful of people looked on as drove an iRacing.com-powered simulator while Michael Waltrip talked him around Daytona International Speedway. Posted on You Tube by Simcraft, builder of the Apex simulator builder, here’s a video of that day in 2010 when a former Daytona 500 champion used iRacing to coach a future one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7RkoG1MKvfU&feature=related This wasn’t Bayne’s first exposure to iRacing; in 2009 a friend bought the then aspiring NASCAR Nationwide driver a gift subscription to the iRacing service. According to Rocky Bayne, Trevor’s dad, his son has a setup in his house, and [...]
Cassill Creates $1,000-to-Win Online Qualifying Challenge
by Joey Dennewitz on December 11th, 2010
NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Landon Cassill is pleased to announce the formation of a new online competition that gives iRacing drivers the opportunity to win $1,000. The Landon Cassill Qualifying Challenge invites iRacing drivers to feel the pressure of a one lap qualifying showdown at the simulated Charlotte Motor Speedway. The winner of the December 18th event will receive $1,000. “I began studying on iRacing simulators back in 2007 and it has really helped my ability to qualify at the Sprint Cup Series tracks that I had not been to before this season,” said Cassill. “Each week I would host a session at the upcoming Sprint Cup Series track on iRacing and work on qualifying runs. Eventually there were 40 to 50 drivers that would join the session and [...]
Hometown Hero Long Captures Snowball Derby
December 6th, 2010
Johanna Long (Adam Fenwick Photo) PENSACOLA, Fla. — Johanna Long may just be getting her feet wet in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, but she’s on top of the super-late-model world after winning the 43rd annual Snowball Derby Sunday at Five Flags Speedway. Long survived a wild finish to win the prestigious short-track event at her home track and in doing so, joined 1994 race winner Tammy Jo Kirk as the only female Snowball Derby champions.
