Warwick joins stewards for Germany
July 28th, 2010
Derek Warwick will join the stewards’ panel for this weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix. Warwick is the third British ex-grand prix driver to advise race officials this year, after former world champions Damon Hill and Nigel Mansell advised in Monaco and at Silverstone respectively. Warwick competed in Formula 1 from 1981 to 1993, during which time he drove for Toleman, Brabham, Lotus, Arrows and Renault, with whom he nearly won the 1984 British Grand Prix

Mansell joins stewards for Silverstone
July 7th, 2010
Former world champion Nigel Mansell is the latest driver to join the stewards’ panel this season. The 1992 title-winner will be the drivers’ representative in the stewards’ office at Silverstone this weekend. Mansell won the British Grand Prix four times during his career, with three of those victories coming at Silverstone in 1987, ’91 and ’92
Mansell back in action for Hungary
June 29th, 2010
The Beechdean Mansell Motorsport team has announced that it will return to competitive action in Hungary in August following its Le Mans crash. Nigel Mansell damaged the Ginetta Zytek GZ09S car in a high-speed crash in the early hours of the Le Mans 24 Hours, something that forced the team to miss the next race of the Le Mans Series in Portugal
Magnussen aims high in Cup debut
June 19th, 2010
Jan Magnussen hopes to be able to get a top-ten finish on his NASCAR Sprint Cup Series debut at Sears Point on Sunday. The Danish driver qualified 32nd on Friday, driving the #09 Phoenix Racing Chevy, with technical support from Hendrick Motorsports. Magnussen’s NASCAR deal came together thanks to his links with General Motors through the Le Mans Series, which led to testing outings on road courses with the manufacturer’s top team in the Sprint Cup
Sarrazin returns for Ypres rally
June 17th, 2010
Stephane Sarrazin will return to the Intercontinental Rally Challenge for the Ypres Rally next weekend. The factory Peugeot racer, who retired from the lead of last weekend’s Le Mans 24 Hours, finished fourth in the IRC-opening Monte Carlo Rally in January.
Audi considering closed-top car
June 17th, 2010
Le Mans winner Audi is considering a coupe body shape for its next LMP1 car, this week’s AUTOSPORT magazine reveals. Audi Sport boss Wolfgang Ullrich has hinted that he no longer considers it viable to return to the Le Mans 24 Hours with a open-top car
Strakka boss hails ‘amazing’ win
June 15th, 2010
Strakka Racing team boss Piers Phillips has hailed his team’s remarkable LMP2 class win at the 78th Le Mans 24 Hours as “amazing.” The British team defeated pre-event favourite Highcroft Racing to win the class, recording the highest ever finish for an LMP2 car at Le Mans by taking fifth overall.
Q and A: Davidson on Le Mans dramas
June 14th, 2010
Anthony Davidson went through it all during his first Le Mans 24 Hours with Peugeot; leading the race, car failure, charging back towards the lead, clashing with GT cars and ultimately retiring short of the finish. After the race, he gave AUTOSPORT his thoughts on the event. Q.
Davidson thrilled with performance
June 14th, 2010
Anthony Davidson was delighted with his personal performance in this year’s Le Mans 24 Hours, despite his #1 Peugeot retiring after leading. The Briton’s best run was a quadruple stint during his car’s charge back towards the lead on Sunday morning, following a four-lap delay to an electrical problem. He consistently lapped four seconds faster than the leading Audis throughout his three-hour stint and handed the car over to Alex Wurz as he homed in on the second-placed #8 Audi, only for the engine to let go early in Wurz’s stint.
Peugeot surprised by reliability woes
June 14th, 2010
Anthony Davidson says Peugeot was surprised by the multiple failures its cars suffered in this year’s Le Mans 24 Hours. The factory 908s were dominating the event until one car dropped out with a suspension failure and the other two each retired with blown engines after or while leading. Davidson’s #1 car had run flat-out for half the race distance after losing four laps on Saturday evening with an electrical problem
Meyrick pleased after ‘crazy’ race
June 13th, 2010
Fourth-placed Andy Meyrick paid tribute to his ORECA team for getting his car to the finish of the Le Mans 24 Hours in fourth place, highest of the petrol-powered cars. The Courage-based chassis suffered the fewest problems of all the petrol LMP1s, overhauling the faster Aston Martins in the second half of the race when the Astons ran into trouble. “Coming here, obviously a good finish is what you hope for, but it’s not what we expected realistically,” he told AUTOSPORT.
Audi admits victory a surprise
June 13th, 2010
Audi’s drivers have admitted that they were surprised to take a clean sweep of the podium in the Le Mans 24 Hours. Timo Bernhard, Romain Dumas and Mike Rockenfeller clinched their maiden victories after the #1 and #2 Peugeots ran into trouble while leading the race
Highcroft knew Strakka would be strong
June 13th, 2010
Highcroft Acura driver Marino Franchitti admitted that he was not sure if his team would have been able to beat LMP2 winner Strakka even if it had not suffered a water pressure issue while running second in class two thirds of the way through the 2010 Le Mans 24 Hours. The American Le Mans Series frontrunning team eventually finished fourth in class and 25th overall, 71 laps off the lead, after limiting its running in the closing stage to ensure it made the flag
Q and A with Bernhard, Rockenfeller
June 13th, 2010
Immediately after the winners’ press conference for the 2010 Le Mans 24 Hours, AUTOSPORT caught up with Timo Bernhard and Mike Rockenfeller to get a sense of how it feels to finish first in the world’s most famous race. This is what two thirds of the victorious Audi #9 crew had to say. Q
Q and A with Franck Montagny
June 13th, 2010
Franck Montagny and his team-mates Nicolas Minassian and Stephane Sarrazin were dominating the Le Mans 24 Hours until their #2 Peugeot suffered an engine failure. Immediately after the race, Montagny told AUTOSPORT how disappointing that moment had been, but why he was still deeply proud of Peugeot’s efforts this week
Montagny: Peugeot was cruising
June 13th, 2010
Franck Montagny says his #2 Peugeot crew were taking it easy and cruising towards victory when the car suffered the engine failure that denied it a seemingly-certain Le Mans 24 Hours victory. The #2 led much of the race before the problem, which would eventually rule out three of the four Peugeots in the race and leave the way clear for Audi to take another one-two-three. “We were like five seconds off what we could have done if we’d pushed hard,” Montagny told AUTOSPORT.
GT2 Porsche relieved to be back on top
June 13th, 2010
Le Mans 24 Hours GT2 winners Wolf Henzler and Marc Lieb were relieved to take Porsche back to the top of the class after two years of Ferrari dominance. The Risi Competizione Ferrari 430 has won the class in the last two races and looked likely to challenge again after fighting the leading works Corvette in the early stages. The #77 Felbermayr Porsche that Henzler and Lieb shared with 2007 class winner Richard Lietz couldn’t match either, but moved forward as the pace of the race took its toll on those ahead
Larbre surprised to win GT1
June 13th, 2010
The Larbre Competition team has admitted it was surprised by its Le Mans 24 Hours GT1 class victory. The French outfit’s Saleen S7 – a model which first raced in 1999 – was off the pace of the class frontrunners early in the race, but took advantage when the Aston Martin, three Ford GTs and leading Alphand Corvette all suffered problems. One of the team’s drivers, Julien Canal, conceded that he was not expecting to have a chance of victory.
Kristensen forgives Priaulx over crash
June 13th, 2010
Eight times Le Mans winner Tom Kristensen says he has forgiven BMW’s Andy Priaulx for the misunderstanding in the fifth hour of the race that cost him a chance of victory in the Le Mans 24 Hours. Priaulx, limping back to the pits with a puncture, moved off the racing line to allow Kristensen through the inside at the Porsche Curves, but the Audi was already committed to the outside line and ran off the circuit, into the gravel
