Mercedes rules out playing team tactics
May 25th, 2013
Mercedes Formula 1 team boss Ross Brawn has ruled out using one of his drivers as a sacrificial lamb in the Monaco Grand Prix to try to guarantee his outfit victory. With Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton securing the front row in Monte Carlo, the team could boost its chances of a win by using one of the drivers to hold the rest of the field up while the other is allowed to break free at the front
Qualifying press conference – Monaco
May 25th, 2013
DRIVERS : 1 – Nico ROSBERG (Mercedes), 2 – Lewis HAMILTON (Mercedes), 3 – Sebastian VETTEL (Red Bull Racing) TV UNILATERAL Q: Nico, I guess in some ways the result that many people had expected – but it was not straightforward in the way it was achieved today, given the conditions. Nico ROSBERG: Oh, definitely, yeah! It could have been a lot easier out there today. The conditions were all over the place and as soon as it started drizzling again the lap times became a lot slower, even on the Inters
Monaco qualifying quotes: Ferrari
May 25th, 2013
Fernando Alonso – 6th: “Unfortunately, today did not go a we had hoped, even if we tried our very best. We weren’t as competitive as in the first two free practice sessions on Thursday, but I don’t think we can lay the blame for this step backwards on the cooler temperatures, because the conditions are the same for everyone
Monaco qualifying quotes: Red Bull
May 25th, 2013
Sebastian Vettel – 3rd: “I was a bit annoyed with my flying lap in Q3; I think I maybe pushed a bit too hard here and there.
Monaco qualifying quotes: Pirelli
May 25th, 2013
Paul Hembery: “Qualifying got off to a tricky start as the drivers were immediately confronted with wet conditions for the first time all weekend in Q1, making it difficult to judge the amount of grip available – particularly as some parts of the circuit were much wetter than others. Generally we saw that the track got a lot quicker as each session went on, making the timing of each qualifying run absolutely crucial.
Alonso concedes victory very unlikely
May 25th, 2013
Fernando Alonso reckons he will have to just try to beat his title rivals in the Monaco Grand Prix, as he doubts he can win the race from sixth on the grid. As Mercedes took another front row lockout , Alonso found himself back on row three, with championship opponents Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen third and fifth, split by Mark Webber. “I think it’s going to be difficult tomorrow,” Alonso admitted
Hamilton says front row a relief
May 25th, 2013
Lewis Hamilton insisted just being on the front row for the Monaco Grand Prix was a relief as he had struggled more in practice than on any previous Monte Carlo visit. The 2008 world champion was outqualified by his Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg for the third consecutive race, as the German continued his pole streak. “I have been struggling all weekend, just struggling with the car,” said Hamilton
Rosberg takes third consecutive pole
May 25th, 2013
Nico Rosberg claimed his third Formula 1 pole position in a row in Monaco Grand Prix qualifying, as Mercedes fended off Red Bull’s challenge to fill the front row again. After practice sessions that had suggested a Mercedes versus Ferrari battle , Red Bull raised its game in a qualifying session that began damp and remained drizzly until the end. Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber were provisionally first and second following the first Q3 runs, and with the rain appearing set to increase, it looked like Red Bull might have the front row sealed

May 24th, 2013

Rosberg: Mercedes pole not guaranteed
May 23rd, 2013
Monaco pacesetter Nico Rosberg remains wary that Mercedes’ Formula 1 rivals are yet to show their strongest hands in Monte Carlo. Mercedes had been a popular tip for victory heading into the weekend, and Rosberg proved such views were not without foundation as he went fastest in both practice sessions in the Principality.
Red Bull admits single-lap pace a worry
May 23rd, 2013
Red Bull is not currently able to match the single-lap pace Mercedes showed in Monaco Grand Prix free practice, reckons Mark Webber. The Australian’s fifth place in the afternoon was the champion team’s best result of practice day in Monte Carlo.
Force India opposing Pirelli alterations
May 23rd, 2013
Pirelli is facing resistance from Force India as it tries to get unanimous approval from Formula 1 teams for its tyre modifications . Following a dramatic week of behind-the-scenes negotiations with teams and the FIA about what it can change on its tyres, Pirelli is hoping to tweak the rears for the next race in Canada to eradicate the delamination issues that have blighted recent grands prix. But although the FIA is happy that there are safety grounds for Pirelli to make the alterations it wants to – which will essentially be replacing the steel belt in the rear tyre with the kevlar used last year – not all teams are eager for such a tweak
Honda ‘will benefit’ from Mercedes work
May 23rd, 2013
Honda’s bid to hit the ground running when it returns to Formula 1 with McLaren in 2015 will be helped by the Woking-based outfit having a season with Mercedes’ new V6 turbo, reckons rival Renault. It was confirmed last week that Honda will be making an F1 comeback in 2015 after signing a multi-year deal with McLaren. The timing of that move means that McLaren will get to evaluate the new Mercedes turbo next year, opening up the possibility that lessons taken on board will be passed on to Honda.

May 22nd, 2013
Fernando Alonso has tipped Mercedes to be a strong contender for victory in Sunday’s Monaco Grand Prix. The German team has yet to finish higher than third in Formula 1 this year, despite claiming three pole positions, after struggling with tyre management . But the Ferrari driver believes that if Mercedes can take pole position in Monte Carlo, it will be favourite for victory.

Ecclestone: drivers have to use brains
May 22nd, 2013
Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone believes Pirelli’s high-degradation tyres mean drivers once again have to ‘use their brains’ to win grands prix. Pirelli has been accused of preventing drivers from racing flat-out with its aggressive 2013 compounds, with Red Bull boss Dietrich Mateschitz saying F1 was now “nothing to do with racing” as tyre conservation took precedence. But Ecclestone said taking care of tyres now was no different to looking after fragile machinery in previous eras, and that rather than deserving censure, Pirelli has improved the show by reintroducing a strategical element into modern F1.
