Teams forced to race in both series
June 17th, 2010
GP2 teams will be forced to compete in both the main and Asia series as part of the selection criteria for the 2011-13 seasons, AUTOSPORT reveals. The current three-year cycle of entries ends this year, and applications are already being considered for the next three-year bracket. While most teams already contest both series, Malaysian squad Meritus has been unique in only competing in Asia, and Racing Engineering, which carried Giorgio Pantano to the 2008 GP2 title, has never competed in the Asia series
Meritus eyes main GP2 series for ’11
March 24th, 2010
Meritus has confirmed that it is in talks to join the main GP2 Series field in Europe from 2011. The team has so far only competed in GP2 Asia, where every year it takes the place of Racing Engineering – the only one of the main GP2 squads not to participate in the winter mini-series. A long-time powerhouse on the Asian single seater scene, Meritus took its first GP2 victory with Luca Filippi in the recent Sakhir rounds, and with a space now available in the full GP2 championship due to the loss of Durango, it has an eye on joining its Asia rivals in Europe as well
Filippi gives Meritus first GP2 victory
March 13th, 2010
Luca Filippi gave the Meritus team its first GP2 victory with a flawless performance in the Asia series feature race at Sakhir. Meritus and Filippi had won a GP2 Asia race together on the road in the inaugural championship’s Sentul event two years ago, but were later disqualified because incorrect tyres had been fitted. This time Filippi held the lead from pole position, and resisted race-long pressure from series champion Davide Valsecchi
Filippi snatches late Sakhir pole
March 12th, 2010
Luca Filippi claimed his first GP2 pole since the 2007 season with a late quick lap at Sakhir today. After a close early battle for the provisional top spot, it looked like Arden’s Charles Pic was set to repeat his Abu Dhabi pole position.
Rossi’s qualifying times disallowed
February 4th, 2010
Alexander Rossi has been moved to the back of the grid for the first GP2 Asia race in Abu Dhabi tomorrow after a front wing infringement was found in post-qualifying checks. The American had qualified his Meritus car in fifth place prior to the stewards’ decision. “During a pitstop, a mechanic adjusted the front wing hole setting on one side to 17 and on the other side to hole 18 which is not allowed – a simple human error,” said a statement from the team
Filippi tops Abu Dhabi practice
February 4th, 2010
Luca Filippi was quickest in free practice as GP2 Asia resumed in Abu Dhabi after its three month break. On a circuit initially covered in dust following an earlier sandstorm, Meritus driver Filippi came through to snatch the top spot from championship leader Davide Valsecchi (iSport) in the closing seconds.
Van der Garde gets early Addax move
January 29th, 2010
Giedo van der Garde will replace Max Chilton at Barwa Addax for the GP2 Asia Series rounds at Abu Dhabi next month. The 24-year-old Dutchman will race for the team in this summer’s main championship and is using the one-off appearance to gain experience of the team and the track, which will host the main series finale in November.
Rossi switches to Meritus for GP2 Asia
January 27th, 2010
Alexander Rossi will race for Meritus for the rest of the GP2 Asia Series. The 18-year-old American, who finished fourth and fifth in the series opener at Abu Dhabi with Ocean Racing in November, will replace Diego Nunes in the Malaysian-based team’s line-up for the second round of the championship on February 5-6. “I am very confident in the team’s abilities to prepare a race-winning car and I am very much looking forward to getting back to work in Abu Dhabi,” said Rossi
Valsecchi wins GP2 Asia opener
October 31st, 2009
Davide Valsecchi opened the GP2 Asia season with a hard-earned victory over fellow category veteran Luca Filippi in Abu Dhabi. iSport driver Valsecchi had to come from behind to beat the Italian, finally taking the lead with a spectacular move through the Turn 11, 12 and 13 complex
Filippi fastest again at Yas Marina
October 24th, 2009
Meritus driver Luca Filippi remained fastest overall on the second of the pre-season GP2 Asia test in Abu Dhabi – the first sessions on the new Yas Marina track that will host Formula 1 next weekend. iSport’s Davide Valsecchi had been quickest by over a second in the morning session, ahead of Formula 3 graduate Sam Bird (ART) and Addax’s Luiz Razia.
