iRacer Profile: Olli Pahkala
by David Phillips on May 11th, 2013
Olli Pahkala is not one to waste time. Since joining joining the iRacing service late last summer, his has been a fast and steady rise through the ranks to the upper echelon of online road racing. After spending the last weeks of 2012 S2 and most of S3 racing (relatively) low-powered cars, he found himself behind the wheel of a virtual Williams-Toyota FW31 in S4 and promptly won eight races in the iRacing.com Grand Prix Series. Not content with than, the Finn reloaded for 2013 S1 and dusted all comers, roaring to 15 wins and 26 tops fives in 38 starts, outdistancing Yuho Abe and Rocco Barone for the title. In addition, he teamed with Greger Huttu, Jukka Savolainen & Co to bring Club Finland its first World Cup of [...]
iRacer Profile: Kalle Ruokola
by David Phillips on November 10th, 2012
Regular inRacing News readers are no doubt familiar with the name Kalle Ruokola. His name is splashed all over Katier Scott’s Classic Teams Championship reports, from the race results to the superb images of his used to illustrate the stories. But the resident of Vantaa, Finland can do lots more than wheel a Lotus 79 and take great screen shots. A music buff and avid golfer, he sports an impressive 205 wins in 614 road course starts (and another 10 on the ovals) with season crowns in the inRacingNews Challenge (SRF), Prototype & GT Championship (Corvette C6.R) and the Radical Racing Challenge, not to mention a slew of Time Trial titles to match. To date he has yet to stand atop the points in the Classic Lotus GP Series, though [...]
Battle in the Pacific
by Patrick Atherton on June 28th, 2011
Okayama International in Japan was the host venue for Round Eight of the iRacing V8 Supercar Series. Things have been getting a little keen in this immensely popular Aussie series, with no shortage of biff at Zandvoort the previous week. Okayama was formerly named Aida, and hosted the “Pacific Grand Prix” in the early 1990′s. The ’94 event was noteworthy for being the penultimate Grand Prix for the late Ayrton Senna, before his tragic death at Imola. The Brazilian great didn’t make it past the first corner thanks to Mika Hakkinen. In any case, the track has probably never seen as much action, in the virtual world at least, since it was added to iRacing’s expanding supply of world-class laser scanned tracks, in Season One. “My strategy was just to [...]
Haug: Red Bull situation a nightmare
June 3rd, 2010
Mercedes motorsport boss Norbert Haug says the clash between Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber is a ‘nightmare’ for Red Bull Racing. “If it happens in fifth and sixth, it is different from if it happens when you are first and second,” Haug told AUTOSPORT. “I think a collision – we one time had it with David [Coulthard] and Mika [Hakkinen] spinning at the A1-Ring – but not a crash like that one
Wolff: Value of privateers will rise
November 20th, 2009
Christian ‘Toto’ Wolff, the businessman and financial manager from Vienna who has bought a minority stake in the Williams team, says his decision is purely commercial. The 37-year-old, a part-time racer and rally driver, purchased a stake in the team that will see him own between “10 and 49 per cent” of the Grove-based squad. “My investment in Williams is a pure strategic decision,” said Wolff, who has been involved in the management of upcoming racing drivers and co-owns a management company with former world champion Mika Hakkinen.
