Fernando Alonso has tipped Mercedes to be a strong contender for victory in Sunday’s Monaco Grand Prix. The German team has yet to finish higher than third in Formula 1 this year, despite claiming three pole positions, after struggling with tyre management . But the Ferrari driver believes that if Mercedes can take pole position in Monte Carlo, it will be favourite for victory.

Sebastien Ogier says the time has come for comparisons between himself and Sebastien Loeb to stop. Ogier has grown increasingly frustrated by the media’s fascination with drawing parallels between the careers of the two Frenchmen, to the extent that he refused to answer questions on the subject on the season-opening Monte Carlo Rally. Sebastien Loeb clinched his seventh Monte Carlo Rally victory early as the final two stages of the 2013 event were cancelled on safety grounds. Heavy rain had moved into the previously icy and snowy region as the cars were in the mid-evening service, and as the worsening conditions prompted hordes of spectators to leave the stages, local roads became badly congested.

Spanish firm Sistemas Integrales de Telecomunicacion (SIT) replaced the WRC’s long-standing timing and tracking provider Stage One Technology for this year, but immediately hit problems.
WRC yet to secure British TV deal

British fans will not be able to watch television coverage of this week’s Monte Carlo Rally as no deal has been agreed between the World Rally Championship promoter and any broadcaster. Right up until the start of the opening round of the 2013 WRC, there had been hopes that a deal would be struck, but it proved impossible. Timing issues leave WRC in the dark

The Monte Carlo Rally running order is a mystery at the end of day one of the World Rally Championship season-opener with a timing problem leaving teams and fans in the dark. Sistemas Integrales de Telecomunicacion (SIT) took over from Stage One Technology as the WRC’s timing and tracking supplier for 2013. An issue with communication on stage three meant a slew of unreliable times as the official system registered gaps of several minutes between lead cars.
