New spec Audi leads at half-distance

The 2013 Audi R18 led the Sebring 12 Hours at the halfway mark in the hands of Tom Kristensen. The Dane, who shares the new R18 e-tron quattro with Allan McNish and Lucas di Grassi, held a 8.1-second lead over the 2012 version of the car driven by Benoit Treluyer shortly after the fourth safety-car period of the race had ended. Both Audis had spells in the lead over the course of the first six hours of the opening round of the American Le Mans Series, but Kristensen moved to the head of the leaderboard during the safety car in the sixth hour.
Graf puts Pickett on top at Sebring

The Muscle Milk Pickett Racing HPD topped the times on the second day of testing ahead of this weekend’s Sebring 12 Hours in the hands of Klaus Graf. The German set the best time of the day aboard the car he shares with Lucas Luhr and Romain Dumas in the American Le Mans Series season opener.

Chaves gets Schmidt Lights seat

Former GP3 racer Gabby Chaves has joined reigning champion team Schmidt Peterson Motorsport for the 2013 Indy Lights season. The Colombian, who finished runner-up to Jack Hawksworth in last year’s Pro Mazda championship, will be the Briton’s team-mate as the pair embark on their first season in the series. “After a strong season in Pro Mazda, the best way to continue my career is by following the Mazda Road to Indy ladder and stepping up into Indy Lights,” Chaves said.
Dalziel joins SRT for Le Mans

Sportscar stalwart Ryan Dalziel will race at the Le Mans 24 Hours this year with the SRT Motorsports Viper team. The US-based Scot, who won the LMP2 class at Le Mans with the Starworks squad last, will race one of the two SRT Viper GTS-Rs in the 24 Hours and at the Sebring and Road Atlanta American Le Mans Series enduros. He will replace IndyCar champion Ryan Hunter-Reay, who is unavailable for two of the three events.

Ambrose continues pole run at Sears

Marcos Ambrose claimed his second consecutive NASCAR Sprint Cup Series pole in qualifying for Sunday’s race at Sears Point. The Richard Petty Motorsports driver, who had taken Michigan pole at a record pace last week, was once again the benchmark in qualifying, this time at a track where he has excelled in the past but where he has yet to win for the first time. The Australian set a time of 1m15.203s, improving around seven tenths from his best in practice.
Carroll Shelby dies aged 89

Former racing driver and legendary auto designer Carroll Shelby died on Thursday at the age of 89. Shelby was a highly successful sportscar racer in the 1950s, winning the 1959 Le Mans 24 Hours in an Aston Martin shared with Roy Salvadori. His career also encompassed Formula 1, where he would make eight starts in championship rounds, including a best finish of fourth in the 1958 Italian Grand Prix.
Ford becomes Almirola’s crew chief

Newman wins after last-gasp drama

Danica Patrick believes she probably set herself too high a target for her first full NASCAR Nationwide Series season, following poor results in the opening two races. Although the former IndyCar star has already contested 27 Nationwide events since 2010, this is the first time she has embarked on a full-season assualt. JR Motorsports driver Patrick was involved in an incident early in the season-opening race at Daytona and last week she was only 21st at Phoenix, where she had competed in NASCAR three times previously
Level 5 retains Bouchut and Diaz

Level 5 Motorsports will retain Christophe Bouchut and Luis Diaz as Scott Tucker’s team-mates for its American Le Mans Series LMP2 campaign this year. The team was the only regular ALMS LMP2 entrant last season, but faces tougher competition this year with several newcomers joining the field. Level 5 will enter a pair of new HPDs for the ALMS and Le Mans 24 Hours.
Dodge to evaluate NASCAR future

Dodge officials say the they will evaluate the future of their NASCAR programme after Penske announced it will join Ford’s ranks in 2013. The move has led to uncertainty over Dodge’s continued longterm presence in the Sprint Cup series with only Penske and Robby Gordon Motorsports currently running its Chargers. Penske’s move follows switches from Chip Ganassi Racing and more recently Richard Petty Motorsports to Chevrolet and Ford respectively in the past two years.
Ragan signs for Front Row

David Ragan will join David Gilliland in Front Row Motorsports’ line-up for the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup. Ragan had driven for Roush Fenway since 2006, but was released at the end of last season – a year which had seen him score his first Cup win in the July Daytona race. “Front Row has made great progress in the last few years, and I look forward to helping them advance to the next level,” said the 25-year-old.
Almirola joins RPM for Sprint Cup

Proton Motorsports team principal Chris Mellors is delighted with the pace P-G Andersson has shown through the morning Rally of Scotland stages. Andersson is fourth after five stages, just four seconds adrift of a podium place. Unfortunately for the British-based team, Alister McRae has been forced to retire the sister Satria Neo S2000 from ninth place after the sump was damaged on Errochty.
