iRacer of the Week: Cody Byus
by David Ifeguni on July 2nd, 2012
Have you ever wondered how it would feel to race in a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race car? Ask one of the 2000 sim-racers who have raced in the iRacing.com NASCAR Class A Series this season. The series runs the car used in the Sprint Cup Series on the same tracks as their real life counterparts like Kentucky Speedway, Daytona International Speedway and Texas Motor Speedway. In real life, Matt Kenseth is leading the NASCAR Sprint Cup points. In iRacing, the NASCAR Class A championship points leader is Pennsylvania’s Cody Byus. Cody has two Class A wins this season, one at Charlotte and one at Michigan, but do you know when he got his first iRacing win? Do you know what he does outside of iRacing? Find out the answers [...]
Warren Edges Buchberger for Truck Title
by Tim Terry on January 25th, 2012
2011 NiSWC champion Adds NASCAR iRacing.com Class C Series Crown to His Trophy Case In the span of seven days, Alex Warren went from winning the NASCAR iRacing.com Pro Series championship to having to battle fellow Pro pilot Brandon Buchberger down to the wire in the NASCAR iRacing Class C Series (NiCCS). The duel was just that, close enough that it came down to the final laps of the season and when the points were tallied, it was Warren and his Core Pipe/GSRacing.net sponsored team who came out on top after the grueling twelve week season – by one point. Week Eleven saw the series convene at the Tricky Triangle, formally known as Pocono Raceway. Warren finished atop the standings for the week and gained 13 points on his nearest [...]
Alfalla Wins Texas, Closes in on Championship
by Jason Lofing on September 14th, 2011
With only three races remaining in the 2011 NASCAR iRacing.com Series World Championship, (NiSWC) it is do or die time, especially for those still alive in the quest for the championship. Texas Motor Speedway played host to the sixteenth race of the season and saw one man rise above the rest. Championship leader Ray Alfalla passed polesitter Josh Parker for the lead on the race’s long green flag run and led nearly all the remaining laps for his third victory of the 2011 NiSWC season. Early in the race, it appeared that it was Parker’s race to lose. He started on the pole and was quickly building a gap when a massive crash happened off of Turn Two on the second lap of the race. The wreck was sparked when [...]
Gorlinsky Breaks Through at Daytona
by Jameson Spies on June 30th, 2010
John Gorlinsky drove his way to the front of the field, and eventually into victory lane at Daytona International Speedway last night in Round Eleven of the NASCAR iRacing World Championship Series (NiWCS). Pit stops were key in the one stop online race. Pit road closed the door for some and opened it for others, including Gorlinsky who put his Virgina Tech Chevy into the lead on Lap 44 following the pit stop exchange and was never headed. However, the Hokie’s first NiWCS win was did not come easily. While leading the race, Gorlinsky momentarily pulled a vanishing act when he lost his internet connection with the iRacing.com server on Lap 68. When his car reappeared, it was in the side of second-placed Derek Wood, causing “The Big One.” Involved [...]
iRacing: Music to Florian Godard’s Ears
by David Phillips on June 9th, 2010
Florian Godard lives life in the allegro lane. A world-class double bassist in the Orchestre d’Ile de France, Godard is one of just five sim racers regularly competing in both the NASCAR iRacing.com World Championship Series (NiWCS) and the iRacing Drivers World Championship Road Racing (iDWCRR). But beautiful music and fast cars have long been vital components of Godard’s life. Now living near Paris, Godard grew-up in a musical family. His mother is a pianist and singer, his father plays the accordion and guitar. So it was only natural, predictable even, for Florian to begin making music at an early age. He began playing the piano as a toddler and was composing music inspired by his favorite video games on his father’s synthesizer by age eight. “I was in love with [...]
Atchison Extends Early NiCSS Lead
by Jason Lofing on May 20th, 2010
Jesse Atchison came into Week Two of the NASCAR iRacing.com Class C Series (NiCCS) fresh-off a very impressive week of online racing at Daytona with the points lead in hand. Charlotte Motor Speedway was the venue for Week Two and Atchison did not disappoint. Tuesday night was the race of the week, with several top NiCCS sim racers taking part, including NASCAR iRacing.com World Championship Series competitors Atchison and good friend Brian Schoenburg. Altogether, 11 of the 17 drivers were Pro license holders, making for a star- studded field as far a NiCCS race goes. Joey Brown led the field to the green and the yellow was quick to follow only two laps in, as Kenneth Decker got sideways and lost it off of Turn Four, causing the field to [...]
Time for NASCAR i.Racing Pro Series
by Glenn Alden on May 7th, 2010
The time has finally come for the NASCAR iRacing.com Pro Series (NiPS) to get underway. The fight to get into the NiPS was brutal, but that’s just the beginning. As the feeder series to the Grand Daddy of them all – the NASCAR iRacing.com World Championship Series (NiWCS) – all the drivers will need to be at the absolute top of their game, week-in and week-out. In the inaugural Pro season, Josh Parker took home the crown, amidst one of the most intense points battles in sim racing history. Parker snagged the championship away from Brad Davies in the final week of the season, and has gone on to a successful NiWCS season thus far. The favorites going into the season are simple… There are none. With the top drivers [...]
Berry Surprised Winner at Darlington
by Jameson Spies on May 5th, 2010
Coming down for the white flag at Darlington Raceway, Brad Davies, the online racing winner at Talladega Superspeedway two weeks ago, could have been forgiven for being excited. Davies, of Wauchula, FL, was a little more than a lap from becoming the first two-time winner and taking over the point lead in the NASCAR iRacing.com World Championship Series. But there’s an old adage in racing – to finish first, first you must finish – and technical issues ended the 25-year-old veteran sim racer’s day two laps shy of the checkered flag, giving a surprised Josh Berry (Hendersonville, TN) his first-ever series win. Berry, who has recently been driving a late model for JR Motorsports in the physical world, finished fourth in the 2009 NASCAR iRacing.com Pro Series and was one [...]
Watch the World’s Top Sim Racers Tackle Darlington Tonight on iRacing.com
by David Phillips on May 4th, 2010
The world’s best sim racers are set to take-on the Lady in Black – aka Darlington Raceway – tonight in Round Seven of the NASCAR iRacing.com World Championship Series (NiWCS). And you’ll be able to watch all the action, live, on iRacing.com. The race will be streamed at www.iracing.com/multimedia/live-broadcasts in Silverlight and Windows Media Player, beginning at 9:00 pm eastern time (1:00 GMT). Will points leader (and Bristol winner) Richard Towler rebound from a tough outing at Talladega Superspeedway? Will Talladega winner Brad Davies make it two in a row? Will another previous race winner like Ray Alfalla, Josh Parker, Sandeep Banerjee or Dale Earnhardt, Jr. become the first two-time winner in NiWCS competition? Or will the combination of Darlington and the NiWCS produce a seventh new winner in as [...]
Who Needs Swahili in Sim Racing?
by Jameson Spies on March 17th, 2010
Jesse Atchison, aka JA28, is one of iRacing’s top oval competitors. Champion of 2009 Season One Legends Cup and Season 4 Impala SS B, the Maryland-basd sim racer was a leading contender in the inaugural iRacing Pro Series Oval (iPSO) competition earlier this year. Atchison started online racing in 2002 and was the 2003 TVR Busch Series champion, 2005 S1 IROC champion, FLM SMSS Season 8 champion, the first ever ASCORS-sanctioned race winner and the 2007 ESCORS Alienware Series Champion. As one of the top fifty finishers in the iPSO, Atchison qualified for the NASCAR iRacing.com World Championship Series where he is currently fourth in the standings behind Richard Towler, Jayson Anderson and Thomas Lewandowski. iRacingNews‘ NiWCS correspondent and (in the interest of full disclosure) teammate Jameson Spies tracked-down [...]
Schoenburg Breaking Free
by Chris Hall on March 11th, 2010
With five weeks of racing in the NASCAR iRacing Class A Series (NiCAS) now complete, it’s Brian Schoenburg who continues to lead the online racing championship, with an even bigger points margin. The Californian secured the second highest tally of the week of 207 points, with a victory in his only race at the Bristol Motor Speedway, that now leaves Schoenburg 95 marks ahead of the chasing pack. Heading up the group of sim-racers following in Schoenburg’s wake, former series leader Justin Roberts appeared in the same event as the championship leader; but despite finishing just five tenths behind the incumbent ‘top dog’ in second position, the Virginias’ Club driver couldn’t match Schoenburg’s pace, reflected in the fact Roberts didn’t lead single lap of the race. Just 19 points behind [...]
Q&A with NiCWS Winner and Pro Road Racing Champion Richard Towler
by Jameson Spies on March 11th, 2010
Over the past seven years Richard Towler has emerged as one of world’s top sim racers. Based in Hull, England, the 26 year old Towler traveled a well-trodden online racing path from Gran Tourismo 2002 to NASCAR 2003 and has been a member of iRacing.com since June of 2008. In that time he has won 229 of the 294 road course events he’s contested and 53 of 144 ovals. To save your calculator batteries, that works-out to a 77.8% winning average on road courses, 36.8% on ovals and 64.3% overall. Did we mention that, overall, he finishes in the top five 86% of the time? Last year, Towler edged Luke McLean and Shawn Purdy for the inaugual iRacing Pro Series Road Racing title. At the same time, he more than [...]
