DTM America is on course to start within the next three years after a collaborative agreement was signed on Tuesday. The DTM-organising ITR, Grand-Am and IMSA, which will become the sanctioning body of next year’s merged United SportsCar Racing series, were party to what was billed as a “technical licence and co-operation agreement”.

Sportscar veteran David Brabham says that a drive in GT racing this year is just as appealing as remaining in the prototype ranks. The Le Mans 24 Hours winner raced a HPD for privateer team JRM in the World Endurance Championship last year with Peter Dumbreck and Karun Chandhok. Having yet to secure a deal for the 2013 season, the Australian said he was evaluating opportunities in the WEC and in North America, and that a top GT drive would also appeal to him

Lotus factory driver Johnny Mowlem will race for the British manufacturer’s representative in North America at Petit Le Mans later this month. The 43-year-old Briton, whose primary race programme with Lotus this year has been in International GT Open, will race Alex Job Racing’s Evora GTE in the American Le Mans Series finale on October 20. He will share the factory-supported GT class car at Road Atlanta with team regulars Townsend Bell and Bill Sweedler

The Automobile Club de l’Ouest believes that the merger between Grand-Am and the American Le Mans Series will make international sportscar racing stronger. ACO president Pierre Fillon, whose organisation licenses the Le Mans name to the ALMS, said the move had “become necessary to enable endurance racing to continue to evolve”. He said the merger, which will come into force in 2014, “will reinforce the presence of endurance racing on the international scene”.

Jost Capito will leave Ford and join Volkswagen Motorsport as the German firm continues its recruitment of senior motorsport personnel ahead of the launch of the Polo R WRC next season. It is not know when Capito will switch, but the move has been confirmed privately by both Ford and Volkswagen. McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh believes Formula 1 must do all it can to “take America by storm” despite doubts about the Austin Grand Prix. Formula 1 is scheduled to return to the United States next year, but doubts surround plans to build a grand prix circuit in Austin, Texas, with organisers having admitted they are willing to delay the debut until 2013. Bernie Ecclestone has also struck a deal with New Jersey to join the calendar from the 2013 season.
