Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton secured an all-Mercedes front row in qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix. Rosberg repeated his Bahrain pole in a brilliant Q3 performance in which he delivered two laps good enough for the top spot.

Plans for Formula 1 to introduce a licence penalty points system for drivers have been approved by the teams. The matter now only needs to be rubber-stamped by a meeting of the FIA’s World Council Meeting in June before being implemented in the 2014 regulations. Following a meeting of team managers in Barcelona to discuss the matter, as first revealed by AUTOSPORT , the proposal of having a licence points system was approved by seven of the current 11 teams.

Williams believes that Formula 1′s return to Europe, which starts with the Spanish Grand Prix this weekend, will give it a better chance of curing its car problems. The Grove-based outfit has had a disappointing start to the campaign, with neither Pastor Maldonado nor Valtteri Bottas scoring any points so far.

James Calado’s career will be overseen by Nicolas Todt, with the GP2 racer having joined Todt’s All Road Management stable. Todt already manages Formula 1 drivers Felipe Massa, Jules Bianchi and Pastor Maldonado, and is confident Calado can join them

Nico Rosberg claimed a shock pole position for Mercedes in Bahrain Grand Prix qualifying at Sakhir. Mercedes had not looked like an outright frontrunner during practice, but Rosberg set a banker 1m32.4s lap at the start of Q3 and it proved impossible to beat. Sebastian Vettel got closest for Red Bull with a 1m32.584s, just ahead of Fernando Alonso’s Ferrari

Williams is pinning its hopes of turning its fortunes around early in the season with a big upgrade package that will be introduced at the Spanish Grand Prix. Williams, which returned to winning ways last year thanks to Pastor Maldonado’s victory at Barcelona , has struggled with an uncompetitive car in the first two races of 2013.

GP2 championship leader Stefano Coletti believes his sprint race victory in Malaysia proves he has already “solved” his problem with the Pirell tyres. Coletti took pole position for the feature race but struggled with tyre wear and was passed by Fabio Leimer and James Calado. He had previously had issues with tyre life on several occasions during 2012

Valtteri Bottas – 11th: “I had a good start but then I drove off the dry line racing van der Garde and ran wide dropping to the back of the field. Once the track started to dry I was able to start overtaking a few cars and I had a good, clean race.

Williams is considering reverting to last year’s exhaust design in a bid to overcome the problems it is facing getting its Coanda concept to work. The Grove-based outfit is convinced that its current car troubles, which continued in Malaysian Grand Prix qualifying , are caused by it not mastering the impact of Coanda exhausts on its new FW35.

Williams technical director Mike Coughlan has admitted that the team must revert the specification of its car to closer to the launch configuration. The team has struggled throughout the Australian Grand Prix weekend, with Pastor Maldonado describing the car as “undriveable” after qualifying.

Qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix will be postponed until 11am local time on Sunday morning due to heavy rain showers in Melbourne. A delayed Q1 managed to take place, but the start of Q2 was repeatedly put back due to the weather conditions

Pastor Maldonado was a new man in the final Formula 1 races of 2012 and can put his wild reputation behind him, reckons Williams technical chief Mike Coughlan. Although Maldonado became a grand prix winner with his triumph in Spain last year , he was also involved in a string of incidents during the season, picking up a number of grid penalties for driving misdemeanours.
