Pirelli tweaks ‘should be tested first’
May 24th, 2013
Force India believes Pirelli should hold fire on making a final decision over changes to its Formula 1 tyres until after teams have tested the revised rubber at the Canadian Grand Prix. Pirelli is currently trying to reach agreement with teams over tweaks to its rear tyres to try to prevent a repeat of recent delaminations.
Pirelli threatens to quit over contract
May 23rd, 2013
Pirelli has warned teams that it will pull out of Formula 1 at the end of the year unless it gets an answer soon on whether they want a fresh contract from 2014. Talks between the Italian tyre manufacturer and the teams about a new deal have stalled in recent weeks, and Pirelli says time is running out on it being able to produce tyres in time to be fully ready for the new 2014 regulations. Paul Hembery, Pirelli’s motorsport director, said in Monaco on Thursday that F1 was facing an ‘extremely serious’ situation, and that if the matter was not resolved very quickly then his company would find it impossible to make new tyres in time.
Force India opposing Pirelli alterations
May 23rd, 2013
Pirelli is facing resistance from Force India as it tries to get unanimous approval from Formula 1 teams for its tyre modifications . Following a dramatic week of behind-the-scenes negotiations with teams and the FIA about what it can change on its tyres, Pirelli is hoping to tweak the rears for the next race in Canada to eradicate the delamination issues that have blighted recent grands prix. But although the FIA is happy that there are safety grounds for Pirelli to make the alterations it wants to – which will essentially be replacing the steel belt in the rear tyre with the kevlar used last year – not all teams are eager for such a tweak
Vettel: Red Bull not lone tyre critic
May 22nd, 2013
Sebastian Vettel insists that Red Bull is not alone in being unhappy about Pirelli’s tyres, and thinks it unfair his team are being singled-out as whiners. Rivals have criticised Red Bull’s outspoken views on the impact of more aggressive tyres this year, even though it is leading the constructors’ championship and Vettel is on top of the drivers’ standings. The team’s stance was further questioned after the Spanish Grand Prix when owner Dietrich Mateschitz suggested F1 was no longer ‘racing’ because Vettel stopped four times – even though he adopted a similar tactic to win the race in 2011.
Red Bull had it too easy – Alonso
May 22nd, 2013
Fernando Alonso reckons Red Bull’s criticism of the Pirelli Formula 1 tyres is simply the result of it not being able to handle defeat well.
Ecclestone: drivers have to use brains
May 22nd, 2013
Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone believes Pirelli’s high-degradation tyres mean drivers once again have to ‘use their brains’ to win grands prix. Pirelli has been accused of preventing drivers from racing flat-out with its aggressive 2013 compounds, with Red Bull boss Dietrich Mateschitz saying F1 was now “nothing to do with racing” as tyre conservation took precedence. But Ecclestone said taking care of tyres now was no different to looking after fragile machinery in previous eras, and that rather than deserving censure, Pirelli has improved the show by reintroducing a strategical element into modern F1.
Tyre ruling not an issue – Mercedes
May 20th, 2013
Mercedes says there can be no grounds for disappointment over the reduced scope of Pirelli’s Formula 1 tyre revisions, despite having suffered with degradation more than most. As AUTOSPORT revealed last week , Pirelli’s revisions – due to come in to force from the Canadian Grand Prix – will now be minimal after the FIA made it clear any tweaks to the rubber could only be made on safety grounds. The governing body’s stance means that Pirelli will not be allowed to make alterations to the tyre specification aimed primarily at lessening tyre degradation or reducing the number of pit stops.
FIA: tyre tweaks can only be for safety
May 17th, 2013
Pirelli’s planned mid-season Formula 1 tyre tweaks are set to be much smaller than originally anticipated after the FIA ruled that changes will only be allowed on safety grounds. Sources have revealed that the governing body has told Pirelli that it is happy to accept – and is indeed keen for – alterations necessary to prevent a repeat of the rear tyre delaminations that have struck at the last few events. But, in a blow to outfits like Red Bull hoping further tweaks would help them overcome tyre difficulties they have faced, the FIA has made it clear it will not tolerate further changes aimed at reducing the number of pitstops or decreasing degradation.
Boullier slams Pirelli tyre tweaks
May 16th, 2013
Lotus boss Eric Boullier has criticised the move by Pirelli to change tyres mid-season just because some teams have complained.
Changes won’t shake order – Pirelli
May 14th, 2013
Pirelli is hopeful that the changes being made to its tyres from the Canadian Grand Prix will not affect the competitive order in Formula 1. After fresh analysis of its products following a four-stop Spanish GP at the weekend, Pirelli has elected to make tweaks to ensure that it returns to its target of two-stop races
Pirelli to change tyres from Canada
May 14th, 2013
Pirelli will make changes to its tyres from the Canadian Grand Prix in a bid to rein back the excessive degradation that has affected Formula 1 this year. After admitting that having four-stop races like the Spanish Grand Prix was too much, Pirelli is to change the tyre structures so they incorporate some of the characteristics from 2011 and ’12.
Unfair to tweak 2013 tyres – Lotus
May 13th, 2013
Lotus thinks it would be unfair if Pirelli makes changes to the tyres later this season just because some teams are struggling to make the rubber last. After a number of outfits were forced to make four-stops during the Spanish Grand Prix due to the high degradation, Pirelli has conceded that it may have to tweak its tyres to limit a repeat in the future. Such changes could hamper the Lotus outfit, which appears perfectly suited to the high degrading rubber with its E21
Mateschitz: F1 is not racing anymore
May 13th, 2013
Red Bull boss Dietrich Mateschitz has launched a furious attack on the state of Formula 1, saying it is no longer about racing. Amid a fresh debate about the impact that Pirelli’s more aggressive rubber for 2013 is having on the world championship battle, Mateschitz has expressed his frustration that Red Bull is being hindered by high-degrading tyres.
Pirelli ponders tyre changes by Britain
May 12th, 2013
Pirelli is considering an overhaul to its tyres for the British Grand Prix in late June in a bid to prevent excessive pitstops ruining the Formula 1 spectacle. After a four-stop Spanish Grand Prix reignited the debate about whether Pirelli’s aggressive approach to 2013 had gone too far, its motorsport director Paul Hembery admitted on Sunday that changes were now being evaluated. “We aim for two to three pitstops and it was too aggressive today,” he explained.
Ferrari: no panic over ’14 tyre supplier
April 29th, 2013
Ferrari says that teams are not unduly concerned by the fact that Formula 1 has yet to secure a new tyre supply contract for next year. Pirelli has been seeking an extension of its current deal, but no agreements are yet in place with the teams and the FIA has yet to sanction the move – or open up the official tyre tender process. With Pirelli well aware of the timeframe needed to prepare tyres for next season, a deal needs to be sorted out in the next few months if F1 is to avoid the risk of being left without a supplier.
Vettel: Red Bull needs to maximise pace
April 19th, 2013
Sebastian Vettel believes Red Bull will have to ensure it can exploit its car’s full pace to defeat Ferrari and Lotus in the Bahrain Grand Prix. Vettel acknowledged that Lotus and Ferrari, which led a session apiece on Friday , looked very strong at Sakhir.
Kovalainen: CT03 ‘on a knife edge’
April 19th, 2013
Heikki Kovalainen has described the Caterham CT03 as being “on a knife edge” after his first experience of the machine in free practice for the Bahrain Grand Prix.
Vettel surprised by Pirelli change
April 18th, 2013
Sebastian Vettel is surprised at Pirelli’s decision to drop the soft compound tyre for the Bahrain Grand Prix.
Raikkonen sees no need to alter tyres
April 18th, 2013
Kimi Raikkonen sees no reason for Pirelli to rethink its approach to Formula 1 tyres, as he dismissed the criticism the Italian firm has received following the degradation issues that characterised the opening rounds of the 2013 season. Red Bull had already been pushing Pirelli to change its compounds even before a Chinese Grand Prix weekend in which the soft tyre proved particularly short-lasting
F1 rookies set for extra Friday tyres
April 14th, 2013
Formula 1 teams running rookie drivers during Friday morning practice are set to get an extra set of tyres from the Spanish Grand Prix onwards. Pirelli has proposed to supply an additional set of tyres, built to the same construction as the current race rubber but using a more durable compound, for any team running a rookie driver on Friday mornings.
