WRC poised for crunch FIA meeting

The FIA is presenting its plans for the immediate future of the World Rally Championship in Paris this week. Led by its rally director Jarmo Mahonen, the FIA has joined forces with WRC promoters Red Bull Media House and Sportsman Media and British sports consultancy firm Portas to produce a document outlining the way forward for the series. DTM set to switch to turbo engines

The DTM is set to ditch V8 engines in favour of two-litre turbos within three seasons as part its drive to become a global formula. The series has set a target of 2016 to go down the same route as Super GT in Japan, which next year will adopt small-capacity, direct-injection four-cylinder turbos for its GT500 class.
F1′s new cars set for January test

Formula 1′s new cars are set to run for the first time in January next year as teams work on finalising a revamped pre-season build-up for the new 2014 regulations. With the switch to 1.6-litre V6 turbo power units prompting all-new cars for next season, teams have already been discussing a totally revised testing plan ahead of the campaign in a bid to ensure that everyone is as ready as possible for the first race.
Bahrain seeking season-opening slot

Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone is open to the idea of making the Bahrain Grand Prix the season opener again. With Bahrain’s track boss Zayed Alzayani saying he would be keen on the idea of his event becoming the first race again – as it was in 2006 and ’10 – Ecclestone himself has not ruled the idea out. “We could do, I suppose, couldn’t we?” Ecclestone said, speaking to reporters at the Bahrain GP on Friday.
Rossi returns to GP2 with Caterham

Alexander Rossi will return to GP2 racing after the Caterham team announced he will replace Ma Qing Hua from this weekend’s Bahrain race. American Rossi had been appointed as Caterham Formula 1 team’s reserve driver alongside Ma at the start of last month. Briscoe set for Le Mans 24 Hours bow

IndyCar refugee Ryan Briscoe looks set to contest the Le Mans 24 Hours for the first time this season. The former factory Porsche driver, who was left without an IndyCar drive after being released by Penske over the winter, is likely to be named as part of the Level 5 Motorsports LMP2 squad’s Le Mans line-up after a victorious debut with the team in last weekend’s Sebring 12 Hours. Team owner Scott Tucker has indicated that it is his intention to share his solo HPD ARX-03b at Le Mans with Briscoe and Marino Franchitti – a repeat of the winning Level 5 line-up at Sebring – but has so far stopped short of confirming them until he announces his plans for the remainder of the season.

Frijns to test Trident GP2 car

Scorpion Racing in HRT revival bid

A group of Canadian and American investors are pushing to try and secure HRT’s entry slot in Formula 1, AUTOSPORT can reveal, but they may have to wait until 2014 before being allowed to join the grid. Sources have revealed that negotiations to purchase the HRT company and secure an entry are at an advanced stage, and the plan for a team known as Scorpion Racing appears to have the blessing of F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone. However, AUTOSPORT understands that the FIA believes the 12th entry slot for 2013 was closed off when it was informed at the end of last season that HRT had been liquidated

Honda has revealed that Casey Stoner decided 2012 would be his MotoGP farewell as soon he won the ’11 title. HRC chief Shuhei Nakamoto said he spent several months trying to persuade the double world champion to reconsider before Stoner revealed in France last May that he would retire at the end of the year

Cole switches to BTCC with Gilham

Single-seater racer James Cole will switch to the British Touring Car Championship this season, driving one of Tony Gilham’s Vauxhall Insignias. Cole won the British Formula Ford title in 2009 before graduating to British Formula 3 and then Formula 2. The 24-year-old did not race last season, but will return in an NGTC Insignia, alongside Gilham’s other BTCC rookie Jack Goff.

Mercedes set to ditch Coanda exhaust

Mercedes is set to abandon its Coanda-effect exhaust for the final race of the season in a bid to try and get a better understanding of its tyre situation. After Nico Rosberg reverted to the non-Coanda design in Austin to assist the team’s 2013 development programme, the team has elected to switch both its drivers to the old version for the final weekend of the season.
