James Hinchcliffe hopes that his maiden IndyCar victory at St Petersburg will silence some of the doubters from earlier in his career, when he suspects that his light-hearted persona was interpreted as not taking his job seriously. After holding held off veteran Helio Castroneves to secure the win , the Canadian said that the manner of the victory should put any lingering questions about his commitment to rest. “I’ve always tried to be myself at the racetrack,” he said

Gordon: Johnson has mental edge
September 25th, 2012
Jimmie Johnson’s previous Chase record gives him a ‘psychological advantage’ heading into the decisive final eight rounds of the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup, according to his four-time champion team-mate Jeff Gordon. Gordon, who finished directly behind Johnson in third at Loudon , said Johnson’s past ability to peak during the Chase – a key ingredient in his unprecedented string of five straight titles between 2006 and ’10 – already made him a favourite for 2012 after just two of the 10 Chase races.

Kenseth: Cup cars too forgiving
June 1st, 2012
Matt Kenseth says he would be in favour of NASCAR Sprint Cup cars having less rear downforce as he believes the current rules make them much more forgiving than in the past, resulting in fewer incidents. Compared to 2011, the Cup season has seen 40 fewer cautions periods up to this point of the year. Many races at intermediate tracks where cars are more aero-dependent have finished with less than a third of the field on the lead lap and a number of drivers unable to get back in contention after slow starts.

Having started his day ill, requiring a visit to the track’s infield care center, Allmendinger drove a solid race and saw his persistence rewarded with his best ever finish in the Sprint Cup series.

February 20th, 2012

Under NASCAR rules, the top 35 in the owners’ standings from the previous year are guaranteed qualifying spots in the opening five Cup rounds.
