Bouffier leads into final two stages

Bryan Bouffier will lead the Tour of Corsica into its final two stages, but Jan Kopecky is still on his tail. The advantage swung between the two drivers throughout the morning, helped by uncertain weather conditions in which stages often featured sun in one section and drizzle in others. Bouffier grabbed first place from overnight leader Kopecky on the opening Carbuccia stage, then stretched his lead to a seemingly comfortable 19 seconds on Sarrola
Kubica retires from lead in Corsica

Robert Kubica has lost the Tour of Corsica lead after running into mechanical trouble on stage five and having to retire. Kubica had taken the lead only one stage before , when the previously dominant Craig Breen clipped a bank and suffered tyre damage. That meant the ex-Formula 1 driver went onto the Barchetta stage seven seconds ahead of nearest rivals Bryan Bouffier and Jan Kopecky.

Robert Kubica leads the Tour of Corsica after a mistake from Craig Breen eradicated the Peugeot driver’s comfortable advantage. Breen had stretched his advantage to 26 seconds by claiming a third straight stage win as the event resumed after service on Barchetta on Friday afternoon. But on the following Taverna stage, Breen ran wide and hit a bank, sustaining a puncture.

Stephane Sarrazin reckons Robert Kubica will be tough to beat on this week’s Tour de Corse. The two ex-Formula 1 drivers will go head-to-head on the European Rally Championship round in turbocharged Regional Rally Cars. Kubica has led both ERC events he has started to date and has claimed 15 stage wins, but has also crashed out on both occasions
Mercedes benefiting from Kubica help

Robert Kubica’s Mercedes Formula 1 simulator tests are helping the team as well as assisting the Pole in his path towards a potential grand prix comeback, says the firm’s motorsport boss Toto Wolff. AUTOSPORT understands that Kubica has now had multiple sessions in the simulator at Mercedes’ base in Brackley. Wolff is adamant that there is no long-term plan in place between Kubica and the Mercedes F1 team, but says that his current sessions are mutually beneficial given the Pole’s level of grand prix experience.

Robert Kubica has confirmed to AUTOSPORT that he has driven in the Mercedes Formula 1 simulator. Reports emerged last week that the Pole, who was in rally action in the European Rally Championship this weekend , has spent some time in the Brackley-based team’s simulator. Speaking to AUTOSPORT at this weekend’s Rally Azores, Kubica confirmed that he had driven in the simulator but he did not want to comment much further on it.

Robert Kubica has retired from the Rally of Portugal for the second day in succession. The Pole’s Citroen DS3 RRC was hit by a repeat of the hydraulic issue that slowed him through the morning. The problem returned on the first stage out of service on Saturday afternoon and he retired just 700 metres into Loule 2, the day’s final test.

With Dani Sordo having damaged his Citroen while chasing Ogier, and Mads Ostberg having rolled his M-Sport Ford while holding the VW off on Friday, the World Rally Championship leader is successfully seeing his rivals off. Robert Kubica admitted that he has been pleasantly surprised by his pace on the opening day of Rally of Portugal. Kubica’s Citroen was the fastest of the Regional Rally Cars competing on the Faro-based event by the end of the day’s four gravel stages. When he was forced to retire with a lack of useable tyres on the road to Lisbon, only rising Finnish star and factory Skoda driver Esapekka Lappi was ahead of him in WRC2.
