Spain qualifying quotes: Pirelli
May 11th, 2013
Paul Hembery: “The teams had their preparation time for qualifying limited by wet weather yesterday morning, so there were still a number of question marks today. As expected we saw a considerable degree of track evolution, with this year’s pole time in Barcelona the fastest-ever since Pirelli came to Formula 1 in 2011. The teams have quickly got to grips with our latest evolution of the P Zero Orange hard, which should make it easier to maintain the tyres within the optimal working temperature range and so use a wider variety of strategies
Pirelli: debris caused di Resta’s issue
May 11th, 2013
Pirelli now suspects that Paul di Resta’s tyre failure in practice for the Spanish Grand Prix was caused by a cut in the rubber. After overnight inspection of the remains of the left rear tyre that gave way on di Resta’s car, Pirelli suspects that the tread overheated after debris caused a small cut in it. The overheating, allied to the force being put through the rubber, caused the tyre to fail as di Resta exited the high-speed final corner at the Circuit de Catalunya
F1 teams pushing to avoid tyre ‘shock’
October 18th, 2012
Formula 1 teams are pushing to ensure there will be no repeat of the ‘shock’ they faced in dealing with tyres at the start of this season, after getting hold of Pirelli’s 2013 specifications for the first time. Pirelli has made its final decision on the modifications it is making to next year’s rubber following the recent conclusion of its private testing programme. This information has been provided to the teams, so they can incorporate that knowledge into the designs of next year’s cars.
Pirelli: No mystery to 2012 tyres
May 25th, 2012
Pirelli insists that there is no mystery to its 2012 tyres – and that teams fully understand exactly what they need to do to get the most out of the rubber. However, the Italian company believes the big fluctuations in form, and various struggles that some teams are having, are the result of those outfits not knowing how to get their cars working with the rubber. Amid an ongoing focus on the impact Pirelli is having on the racing this year, with five different winners in the first five races, its motorsport director Paul Hembery said: “I would say all the teams understand the tyres – what they don’t understand is how to make the interaction between the car and the tyres do what they want
Pirelli announces Bahrain tyre choice
April 3rd, 2012
Pirelli has announced its tyre compound choices for three more grands prix, revealing the rubber it will bring to the Bahrain, Spanish and Monaco races. Bahrain will see the same medium/soft selection made for Australia and China, before the hard and soft compounds are used for Catalunya – in an effort to both handle the track’s high lateral tyre loadings and promote strategic variety. For Monte Carlo, Pirelli will bring its super soft for the first time in 2012, alongside the soft compound
