Formula 1′s young driver test at Silverstone is now set to go ahead in the week after the British Grand Prix, AUTOSPORT has learned, but it now may only involve three teams over two days.
June 14th, 2012
Formula 1 teams are still hoping to resurrect plans for the young driver test to take place at Silverstone this year, despite doubts about whether or not the venue will be able to host it. Although nine teams had hoped to take up the option of running at Silverstone in the week after the British Grand Prix, it has emerged that the track informed them recently that its race deal with Formula One Management meant the circuit could not be used that week. That move has also cast doubt on whether or not the second option of a test in Abu Dhabi can go ahead, or whether a totally new test at a venue like Jerez will need to be arranged for post-season

Jean-Eric Vergne says he is banking on an overnight improvement from Scuderia Toro Rosso if it is to be competitive for the remainder of the Canadian Grand Prix weekend. The Frenchman finished the first two practice sessions in 16th and 19th positions respectively, and while he was happy to get through his entire programme, Vergne admitted that the outright pace just was not there. “The day went smoothly, because even if there were a couple of red flags and a few drops of rain, we managed to get through all our programme, completing a good number of laps,” he said

Jean-Eric Vergne believes that it is only a matter of time before he puts his qualifying struggles behind him after missing the cut in Q1 in the previous three Formula 1 races. The Frenchman has turned in some impressive race drives this year and qualified a strong 11th in Australia.

Scuderia Toro Rosso team principal Franz Tost has described Formula 1 in 2012 as “the best” he has seen. Tost, a former Austrian Formula Ford Champion, believes that the unpredictable opening four races of the season has made the sport more appealing. “The present F1 is the best F1 I have seen so far,” Tost told AUTOSPORT.

Lotus team principal Eric Boullier has slammed plans to hold Formula 1′s young driver test at Silverstone in July as ‘nonsense’ – and hopes bad weather forces it to be cancelled. As AUTOSPORT revealed, F1′s young driver test is being split into two venues this year, with 10 teams currently electing to run immediately after the British Grand Prix and only Red Bull Racing and Scuderia Toro Rosso opting to run in Abu Dhabi in November. But Boullier is deeply critical of the Silverstone decision, which he thinks only makes sense from a cost perspective

Daniel Ricciardo is hoping the tight battle brewing for Formula 1′s midfield honours will play into the hands of Scuderia Toro Rosso in 2012. The Australian drove the STR7 for the first time this week on Saturday, completing a full programme of more than 130 laps in Catalunya testing.

Jean-Eric Vergne has been encouraged with the in-roads Scuderia Toro Rosso is making on the low-speed grip of its new car in Barcelona. Following yesterday’s full programme of testing, in which Vergne completed 113 laps, the Frenchman said that the all-new STR7′s strength was grip in the high-speed corners.

February 22nd, 2012
Daniel Ricciardo is confident Scuderia Toro Rosso has produced a car that will enable it to move up the order in 2012. After some positive early indications from the new STR7 during the first tests at Jerez and Barcelona, Ricciardo feels that the team can achieve its ambition of finishing in the top seven teams this year
February 9th, 2012
Daniel Ricciardo believes that Scuderia Toro Rosso’s strong start in testing with the new STR7 is crucial given the inexperience of the Italian team’s rookie driver line-up. Ricciardo has started only 11 grands prix, while team-mate Jean-Eric Vergne will make his race debut in Australia next month. This means that the reliability and driver-friendliness of the new machine has allowed the pair to focus on their driving and improving the car rather than getting bogged-down in troubleshooting

Daniel Ricciardo says he is ready to assume the role of team leader at Scuderia Toro Rosso if he can assert himself over new rookie team-mate Jean-Eric Vergne in 2012.
