GP2 to keep current car to cut costs
June 17th, 2013
The GP2 Series will reuse its existing chassis for the fourth three-year lifecycle that begins next season as part of a cost-cutting exercise, AUTOSPORT can reveal. GP2 chief Bruno Michel has targeted a budget reduction of “more than 10 per cent” for his teams from 2014 in reaction to the ongoing economic crisis
Yelloly, Williamson put to back of grid
June 15th, 2013
GP3 race stewards have banished third-placed qualifier Nick Yelloly and 13th-placed Lewis Williamson to the back of the Valencia grid after their cars were found to have technical irregularities. Yelloly’s Carlin machine was ruled not to comply with the specified dimensions after qualifying, which was a breach of article 4.1 of the series’ technical regulations. All the motorsport action as it happens with Race Centre Live Stewards also found that Williamson’s Bamboo Engineering car did not comply with the high roll back caliper seals, which is a breach of article 1.6 of the technical rules.
German cars barred from British F3
June 12th, 2013
German Formula 3 Cup cars running the series’ spec Volkswagen Power Engine will no longer be permitted to enter British F3 International Series events. The move has been made after John Bryant-Meisner, driving the Performance Racing Dallara that he races in German F3, took two dominant pole positions and two clear race wins in last month’s opening British F3 round at Silverstone
Oulton Park debut for Neate’s IP Tech
June 7th, 2013
Andy Neate’s IP Tech Race Engineering squad will make its British Touring Car Championship debut at Oulton Park this weekend. The new squad, which will run a single NGTC Chevrolet Cruze for team boss Neate this weekend, had initially planned to contest the whole season, but has instead missed three rounds in order to complete the car.
IndyCar issues post-Detroit sanctions
June 7th, 2013
The Rahal Letterman Lanigan team and Dragon Racing driver Sebastian Saavedra have been fined by IndyCar following last weekend’s races at Detroit. RLL was penalised a total of $10,000 for technical violations discovered on James Jakes’s car after qualifying for Saturday’s race
BMW WTCC exit likely over new regs
June 6th, 2013
BMW is virtually certain to cease its involvement in the World Touring Car Championship next year, when the series’ new technical regulations are expected to come into force. The German manufacturer last competed as a factory entrant in 2010, but has been represented by independent teams such as ROAL Motorsport, Wiechers-Sport and Team Engstler since then, while also selling its factory-produced TC engine on a customer basis. BMW’s current 1.6-litre turbocharged engine is now in its third year of racing and has powered six victories
Keselowski, Penske penalised again
June 5th, 2013
Sprint Cup champion Brad Keselowski, his crew chief Paul Wolfe and the Penske team have all been penalised after his car failed a post-race technical inspection after last weekend’s race at Dover. The car was found to be in violation of Sections 12-4J (any determination by NASCAR that equipment used in a race does not conform to the rules), 20-12.8.1B, (minimum front car height) and 12-1 (actions detrimental to stock car racing) of the series’ regulations
Rosenqvist adds spectacular third win
June 2nd, 2013
Felix Rosenqvist overtook Daniil Kvyat in stunning fashion to set up his third Formula 3 European Championship win of the weekend at Spielberg and further close on the series lead. The Mucke Motorsport driver, whose result made him the first man to win three times in the series in a single round, started third on the grid and held the position through the first two corners as Raffaele Marciello and Kvyat disputed the top spot. But as the front two held each other up at the following corner, both Rosenqvist and Latifi’s superior exits brought them alongside the pair.
Ghinzani to expand to two cars
May 30th, 2013
Auto GP squad Ghinzani Motorsport will expand to two cars and run GP2 regular Kevin Giovesi at Silverstone this weekend. Piercarlo Ghinzani’s outfit moved into the series at the start of the year following the demise of Italian Formula 3, running a single-car entry for 16-year-old Robert Visoiu.
Sainz joins Monaco FR3.5 field
May 17th, 2013
Red Bull backed racer Carlos Sainz Jr will drive for Zeta Corse in the Monaco Grand Prix-supporting Formula Renault 3.5 race. Sainz, who is racing full-time in GP3 this year, takes over the second seat at the team, which has already been raced by Emmanuel Piget and Matheo Tuscher this season. With GP3 not returning to Monaco this year after the series held a round there for the first time last season, the FR3.5 race gives Sainz an opportunity to gain experience on the famous street circuit.

Bangkok has joined a list of candidate cities that includes London, Rome, Los Angeles, Miami, Beijing, Putrajaya, Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro.

The world championship-winning AF Corse Ferrari team will contest the new Asian Le Mans Series, which kicks off in South Korea in August. Frijns uncertain of future despite win
May 13th, 2013
Barcelona GP2 feature race winner Robin Frijns admits he could yet be forced to withdraw from the series due to a lack of budget. The Dutchman, left without a drive at the start of 2013 despite winning last year’s Formula Renault 3.5 title, claimed victory and a podium for new squad Hilmer in what was only his second weekend in the series

IndyCar admits that it is in discussion with Derrick Walker about hiring the 68-year-old to take up a racing operations role within the series, although it says that no contracts have been signed. It was reported earlier this week that Walker would leave his current post as team manager of Ed Carpenter Racing after this weekend’s ALMS race at Laguna Seca to take up his new role next week

British Touring Car boss Alan Gow wants the Jack Sears Trophy to become a perpetual element of the series. The award, named after the inaugural BTCC champion, was introduced for S2000 runners this year. There are currently six S2000 cars in the field and they are being phased out as the main NGTC element of the grid grows.
Kentucky keen for IndyCar return
May 1st, 2013
Kentucky Speedway general manager Mark Simendinger believes that IndyCar will return to the 1.5 mile oval in the future, although he cautions that there is no deal currently in the works. The track was on the IndyCar schedule for 12 years before it failed to agree terms for a contract renewal with the series when its previous deal ended in 2011. But speaking at the circuit’s fan day last weekend, Simendinger said that he had no reason to believe that the track, which continues to host NASCAR, would not hold single-seaters events again in the future
