Sauber confident of more progress
May 19th, 2013
Sauber is confident it has made progress with solving the rear-end instability problem that held it back early in the season. The Swiss squad tried a new rear wing in last weekend’s Spanish Grand Prix, which was found to be a step forward.
Ferrari hits out at Red Bull over tyres
May 17th, 2013
Ferrari has hit out at rival Red Bull’s criticisms of the current tyres in Formula 1, saying it does not understand why it should feel ‘ashamed’ for winning races with aggressive four-stop strategies. Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz attacked the state of F1 after the Spanish Grand Prix, claiming the sport was no longer about racing but instead was simply about tyre preservation.
Double points finish key for Force India
May 17th, 2013
Force India’s hopes of keeping McLaren behind it hinge on achieving double points finishes, according to deputy team principal Bob Fernley.
Ricciardo hopes Toro Rosso slump over
May 15th, 2013
Toro Rosso now understands how to get the best of its car and can be a regular Formula 1 points-scorer again, reckons Daniel Ricciardo. The Italian team had an encouraging Spanish Grand Prix weekend, with both Ricciardo and team-mate Jean-Eric Vergne coming close to Q3, and the Australian taking a point for 10th in the race. Ricciardo had previously made a breakthrough with seventh place in China, only for Toro Rosso to be left baffled when the best it could manage a week later in Bahrain was 16th.
Mercedes board not rattled by struggles
May 14th, 2013
Mercedes’ board members are fully behind the team despite its early season tyre struggles, says motorsport boss Toto Wolff. The German car manufacturer has impressed with its qualifying form so far this year – securing three pole positions – but difficulties managing its tyres have resulted in it slipping down the order in races
Gutierrez: 11th in Spain like a victory
May 14th, 2013
Esteban Gutierrez believes that his strong run to 11th in the Spanish Grand Prix was “like a victory” after his poor start to the season. The Sauber rookie had been under pressure having failed to score a point in his first four grands prix
Boullier urges Lotus to be greedy
May 14th, 2013
Lotus boss Eric Boullier wants his team to be “greedy” and start pushing for more wins, even though its consistent form has put it in title contention.
McLaren denies use of team orders
May 13th, 2013
McLaren insists it did not order Sergio Perez to ease off in his Spanish Grand Prix battle against Jenson Button in an attempt to avoid a repeat of their Bahrain GP clash. Just one race after the pair came to blows at Sakhir with an over-aggressive fight for positions , the prospect of another wheel-to-wheel dice was on the cards at Barcelona when Perez closed in on his team-mate in the closing stages. However, a late radio message to the Mexican that told him to focus on conserving his tyres meant he abandoned his chase of Button, and he finished two seconds behind at the chequered flag.
Ferrari wary of qualifying focus
May 13th, 2013
Ferrari says its quest to improve qualifying form must not come at the expense of its race-day performance that has proved so crucial this season.
Mercedes: no inherent car problem
May 13th, 2013
Mercedes suspects that its tyre dramas are not being caused by an inherent problem with its car. The team suffered a deeply frustrating Spanish Grand Prix, where both Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton’s form slumped after locking out the front row, and it does not yet have an answer as to why its W04 is so strong in qualifying and so poor in the races. When asked by AUTOSPORT if Mercedes believed the matter was related to the procedure of looking after the tyres, its motorsport boss Toto Wolff said: “I don’t think it is an inherent car problem because if you have an inherent car problem you cannot do three pole positions
Spain race quotes: Ferrari
May 12th, 2013
Fernando Alonso – 1st: “Even if this is the third time I’ve won a home race, the emotion is still very strong, as if it had neverhappened before. It’s nice to be able to give the whole of Spain this win, especially at a time when the country is in crisis and for many people, it’s not possible to come here to bring their support. I thank everyone for that support and the team for doing a fantastic job.
Spain race quotes: Caterham
May 12th, 2013
Charles Pic – 17th: “I’m really happy with today’s performance. Finishing 17th doesn’t really tell the whole story as we ended the race right behind one of the Williams cars which shows that we’ve made some good progress this weekend. The blue flags didn’t help as without them I’d have had a much better chance of overtaking him, but it was still good that I could attack him in the last few laps.
McLaren shelved wing amid legality fear
May 11th, 2013
McLaren opted not to run its latest-specification front wing in qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix because it did not have the chance to check it would pass the FIA’s bodywork flexibility tests. A pair of new front wings reached Barcelona overnight, but ahead of Saturday morning practice the decision was made not to risk running them without checking. “It was very tight,” said team principal Martin Whitmarsh when asked why the new front wing design was not used.

McLaren: no quick fix for car problems
May 10th, 2013
McLaren admits that fixing the problems on its MP4-28 is going to be a long-term project, as it further played down talk of a dramatic step forward in Spain this weekend. The Woking-based team has introduced at the Circuit de Catalunya a heavily revised car, which features a new front wing, rear wing, sidepods, tweaked rear suspension uprights and other minor changes
Webber aims to capitalise on ‘form’ GPs
May 9th, 2013
Mark Webber is confident that the upcoming run of ‘form’ races will allow him to get back into the Formula 1 world championship hunt. The Australian is already 45 points behind standings-leading team-mate Sebastian Vettel after claiming only one podium finish in the opening four races of the season. But Webber has won grands prix at five of the six circuits visited by F1 between now and the August break, with Montreal the only venue he has yet to triumph at.
Mercedes expects boost from tyre tweak
May 9th, 2013
Mercedes duo Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton believe their chances of a good result in the Spanish Grand Prix have been boosted by the change in the hard compound tyre . Although Mercedes struggled in Bahrain with overheating rear tyres, both drivers think that cooler European weather and moving the hard Pirelli’s operating window in line with the medium will help them. “The [new hard] tyre is closer to the operating window of the medium,” explained Rosberg
Alonso: Ferrari can attack in Spain
May 9th, 2013
Fernando Alonso says he arrives at his home grand prix in Spain feeling that he can go on the attack for the first time since he joined Ferrari. The Spaniard has won the Barcelona race just once – in 2006 with Renault – and has been hindered by uncompetitive cars in the three home races he has competed in with Ferrari. This year, however, Alonso feels he has a car that will allow him to change the defensive approach of previous years.
Williams has ‘plan B’ for troubled car
May 9th, 2013
Pastor Maldonado insists that Williams has a ‘plan B’ should the major upgrade package it will trial in Friday practice for the Spanish Grand Prix not perform as expected. Williams has endured a poor start to the 2013 Formula 1 season and has yet to score a point heading into a race that it won last year . But despite being confident that the new parts, which Williams has successfully tested during two days of straightline running at the Idiada facility in Spain since the Bahrain Grand Prix, will work, Maldonado does not see this upgrade as make or break for his campaign
Ferrari’s start ‘only a six out of 10′
May 7th, 2013
Ferrari believes there is a lot of room for improvement this season, with chief designer Nikolas Tombazis saying the Scuderia deserves a six out of 10. The Maranello squad has enjoyed a stronger start to the campaign compared to last year, when it was hindered by a car that failed to deliver the expected performance. Ferrari has scored 77 points so far, compared to 45 at this point last year
