Berton secures first Superstars win

Giovanni Berton took his first Superstars International Series race win in the second encounter in Brno, a race in which title contender Tonio Liuzzi crashed out in dramatic fashion. Berton took BMW’s first win in more than a season in commanding style, charging his way from sixth on the grid to the lead within half a lap. Once in front, he made sure he stayed there, even surviving a mid-race safety car – sparked by a crash between ‘Diabolik’ (Ferlito Jaguar) and Max Mugelli (Dinamic BMW) – to take a 2.3s win.

Giovanardi returns to Superstars

Fabrizio Giovanardi will return to competition this year after announcing he will rejoin the Superstars series this month. The Italian, who has nine major tin-top titles to his name including two BTCC crowns, raced in the series in 2010 and will be joining the Petri Corse team driving a Porsche Panamera S at Brno later this month. Giovanardi is the only driver to have won with the Panamera in the Superstars series so far
Kristoffersson makes GT switch

Johan Kristoffersson will drive for Audi Sport Italia in this weekend’s Italian GT Championship round at Misano. He will share a GT3-spec Audi R8 LMS with Alex Frassineti, while Andrea Sonvico and Dindo Capello will drive Audi Sport Italia’s second R8 LMS ultra. The Audi deal spells an end to Kristoffersson’s deal to drive a Petri Corse Porsche Panamera (pictured) in this year’s Superstars International Series

Vitantonio Liuzzi stormed to pole position for the first Superstars International Series race of the season at Monza. The Romeo Ferraris Mercedes driver was in a class of his own throughout the half-hour session, setting the benchmark time of 1m54.208s just 10 minutes in. While team-mate Thomas Biagi did his best to chase down Liuzzi’s time, the former BMW driver was forced to settle for second place with a best of 1m54.538.

Cadillac team returns to Superstars

RC Motorsport will return to the Superstars International series this year, fielding two Cadillac CTS-V cars for Roberto Benedetti and Roberto del Castello. The Italian team makes its comeback after a brief switch to the sister GT Sprint series, and it will compete in both championships this year. Morbidelli keeps Audi Italia drive

Ex-Formula 1 driver Gianni Morbidelli will continue with Audi Sport Italia in the Superstars Series for a third season. Morbidelli has been a Superstars regular since 2007, winning the Italian title every year from ’07-09 and adding the International crown in the latter year. He rejoined the Audi fold in 2011 after a two-year BMW stint, but has yet to take a race win since his return.
Fisichella plans Superstars return

Pasquale di Sabatino will test the Solaris Chevrolet Lumina this week as he considers a switch to Superstars for 2013. The 25-year-old Italian moved from single-seaters to saloons last season when he raced Bamboo’s Chevrolet in the World Touring Car Championship, finishing 15th in the standings
Nannini set for Superstars test

Alessandro Nannini will take part in next week’s International Superstars test at Adria next week, opening the door to a possible race return. The 53-year-old Italian, who infamously won the 1989 Japanese Grand Prix for Benetton, has not raced full-time since the 1997 FIA GT season.
