Analysis: tyre change tech challenges
May 15th, 2013
Pirelli’s decision to change its tyres from the Canadian Grand Prix onwards will potentially have a far-reaching effect. Tyres are an integral part of the car’s design, affecting the aerodynamics and the suspension. With changes to the construction moving back towards the 2012 tyre specification, married to the current compounds, teams will be heading back to their computer screens to re-optimise their cars around the modified tyres
Lotus rues Grosjean’s suspension fault
May 12th, 2013
Lotus is sure Romain Grosjean had the pace to help prevent it losing second in the constructors’ championship after the Spanish Grand Prix had his suspension not failed. Grosjean was running ninth in the first stint, but had to park with a problem on his car’s right rear on lap eight
Loeb takes secure lead into final day
May 3rd, 2013
Sebastien Loeb will start the final day of Rally Argentina with a 39.8-second lead over Sebastien Ogier. A mistake on SS7 and puncture on SS8 left Ogier half a minute adrift of Loeb and convinced him to settle for second place . Ogier’s Volkswagen outpaced Loeb’s Citroen by half a second in their head-to-head on the evening superspecial that closed Friday’s action, but that made scant impact on the overall standings
Debris caused Hamilton’s tyre drama
April 20th, 2013
Lewis Hamilton’s left-rear tyre failure during Saturday morning practice for the Bahrain Grand Prix, which led to his five-place grid penalty , was caused by metal debris, according to Pirelli. The problem led to suspension and gearbox damage, as confirmed by a Mercedes statement. This forced Mercedes to change Hamilton’s gearbox, which was being used for the fourth weekend of its run of five, leading to the penalty.
Ogier feared glitch would cost victory
April 15th, 2013
Sebastien Ogier feared his bid for Rally of Portugal victory would be ended by the technical problems that struck his Volkswagen on Sunday morning. The Frenchman had built up a lead of more than a minute over everyone but team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala heading into the final four stages, but a technical problem – subsequently diagnosed as a slipping clutch – meant he surrendered huge chunks of time on stage 12. With no service to separate that SS12 and the following 52-kilometre stage 13, and with Mikko Hirvonen rapidly closing, Ogier’s lead looked increasingly precarious.
Hyundai reveals updated WRC car

Hyundai Motorsport revealed its latest specification i20 WRC at the Geneva Motorshow on Tuesday.
Allmendinger back to NASCAR
February 26th, 2013
AJ Allmendinger will return to the NASCAR Sprint Cup to rejoin Phoenix Racing in this weekend’s Phoenix round. Although Allmendinger looks increasingly likely to contest at least a handful of IndyCar races this season for former NASCAR employer Penske, he will replace Regan Smith in James Finch’s Cup squad in Arizona
Lotus: No fears of test drama repeat
February 11th, 2013
Lotus is heading to next week’s second pre-season Formula 1 test at Barcelona confident there will be no repeat of the suspension dramas that forced it to withdraw last year. After once again showing promising form in the first test at Jerez, Lotus needs no reminding that its pre-season preparations in 2012 suffered a major setback when it had to quit running at Barcelona because of suspension failure
US Saturday quotes: Toro Rosso
November 17th, 2012
Jean-Eric Vergne – 14th: “I think the team has worked well so far this weekend to produce a car that seems a bit more competitive than in the past few races. It doesn’t mean much that I beat my team-mate today, because he had some difficulties in the first session. Maybe I could have got a bit more out of the car this afternoon, perhaps found a couple of tenths
Solberg insists incident unavoidable
November 9th, 2012
Petter Solberg insists he was not to blame for the suspension damage that ended his chances of winning Ford’s final rally as a factory World Rally team.
Major set-up changes for Vettel
November 4th, 2012
Red Bull has made major changes to the set-up of Sebastian Vettel’s car ahead of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in a bid to help his chances of charging through the field. The world champion will start from the pitlane at Yas Marina after his team elected to remove his RB8 from parc ferme overnight in the wake of the fuel cell problems that led to his exclusion from qualifying . The team claimed that it had chosen to take the car out of parc ferme to get to the bottom of why the FIA was unable to extract the mandatory one-litre sample of fuel it requires for post-qualifying checks.
Hamilton concedes title out of reach now
October 14th, 2012
Lewis Hamilton believes the rear suspension problem that ruined his Korean Grand Prix has ruled him out of contention for the 2012 Formula 1 title. Hamilton could only finish 10th at Yeongam , and was informed by his McLaren team after the race that his car had broken a rear anti-roll bar near the end of the first stint. The result leaves him 62 points behind race winner and new championship leader Sebastian Vettel with four rounds to go.
Pedrosa delighted with early progress
October 12th, 2012
A buoyant Dani Pedrosa said he was delighted with Honda’s progress on the opening day of MotoGP’s Japanese Grand Prix. Victorious in three of the past four races – with only a first-lap crash preventing him from challenging at Misano – Pedrosa entered Motegi trying to further deplete Jorge Lorenzo’s 38-point championship lead
McLaren not aware of gearbox problem
September 23rd, 2012
McLaren had little warning that Lewis Hamilton’s gearbox was about to fail in the Singapore Grand Prix – as it denied suggestions it knew of an issue heading into the race. Hamilton retired from the lead of the race on lap 23 at the Marina Bay circuit after finding himself unable to select a gear.
Hirvonen accepts blame for poor pace
August 24th, 2012
Mikko Hirvonen believes he will have to rethink his driving style to get on the pace in Germany. The Finn is only sixth after day one of Rally Deutschland, 48.9 seconds behind his rally-leading Citroen team-mate Sebastien Loeb
Keselowski fears Allmendinger tainted
July 15th, 2012
Brad Keselowski believes his Penske team-mate AJ Allmendinger faces a tough road ahead following his positive test for a stimulant, which led to his suspension from NASCAR. Speaking for the first time about the issue, Keselowski said that regardless of the result of a ‘B’ sample test, which Allmendinger has already requested, his team-mate’s reputation could be damaged beyond repair.
Lorenzo buoyed by ‘excellent’ start
July 13th, 2012
Jorge Lorenzo has lauded Yamaha’s ‘excellent beginning’ to the Italian Grand Prix at Mugello, as he bids to end Honda’s current run of two straight victories. After being taken out at the first corner in the Dutch TT, Lorenzo was then unable to match the works Hondas at the Sachsenring – even if he was able to extend his championship lead due to Casey Stoner’s last-lap crash.
Allmendinger fails drugs test
July 8th, 2012
AJ Allmendinger has been temporarily suspended from NASCAR following a positive test for forbidden substances.
E-tron drivers say fuel will be critical
June 14th, 2012
Marcel Fassler and Benoit Treluyer say that the Audi e-tron is faster and more flexible than the Ultra, but that the race performance will be heavily influenced by the fuel consumption of the hybrid. The 2011 Le Mans 24 Hours winners told AUTOSPORT that the Ultra has an advantage due to its optimised weight distribution but that the extra power and traction of the e-tron should make it ultimately faster as long as the drivers can make the e-tron’s 58 litre fuel capacity last for the same number of laps as the Ultra’s 60 litres. “They are very close and hopefully we can do the same number of laps with a bit better performance as we have the extra power on the exit of a few corners,” said Treluyer.
