Circle Track School: Lessons From A Champion
by George Wood on May 22nd, 2013
The great thing about going to the local short track is that you’re never really sure who is going to show up, and especially so when it’s a special event. Here in Pennsylvania, my local track, Selinsgrove Speedway, hosted their annual 358/360 Sprint Car National Open last week, drawing several touring drivers as well as some from Canada, Michigan, and New York. However, the biggest surprise of all came from Indiana. Tony Stewart decided to fly up to the track from Martinsville, Virginia, to have some fun and race against the Pennsylvania sprint car drivers around a moderately banked and wide surface that is considered the fastest on the East Coast. With qualifying speeds expected to be around 17.5 seconds on a cold April night, everyone was excited about the [...]
Get to Know: Joshua Laughton
by David Ifeguni on February 11th, 2013
If you want to talk about quick learners, then you’ve come to the right place. The driver I interviewed for this week’s Get to Know joined iRacing in mid-2008, but did not start using iRacing competitively and full time until 2010. When he got serious in 2010, he really got serious. How serious? He went from a Class C license to an oval pro license in less than half a year. He then went on to compete in the second season of the NASCAR iRacing.com Series World Championship, running in 16 of the 18 total races. This week’s featured driver is Joshua Laughton. The 29 year old Laughton, who currently lives in California, has accomplished a lot on iRacing. In his case, appearances are deceiving. From a glance at his [...]
Lessons from a Veteran “Up ‘n Comer”
by Andrew Mitchell on July 20th, 2012
Vinnie Sansone is one of those up and coming drivers you don’t want to miss because many believe, in the next year or so, he can contend for a NASCAR iRacing.com Series World Championship title. Vinnie has been iRacing since 2008 and has put up some great numbers. For example, in only 111 oval starts this season, he has won 39 races and finished in the top five 80 times, with an average finish of sixth place. To this point in 2012 he has completed 7773 laps on the oval side. Of those 7773 laps, more than 1300 were run in the 2012 NASCAR iRacing.com Series World Championship where Sansone has completed ten races with an average finish of 25th. At first glance, you may think that those stats aren’t [...]
Sandt Dominates (Again) at Stafford
by Craig Walker on July 16th, 2012
While all the focus of the NASCAR iRacing.com SK Modified Series may be on the championship battle between Richard Smith and Marc Pilon, Robert Sandt is quickly emerging as the driver to beat. As the series headed to Jack Arute’s Stafford Motor Speedway, Sandt drove to a solid victory for the second consecutive week and declared himself king of the half mile track. An extremely competitive field saw Pilon and Sandt line up one/two on the front row, while Pilon’s championship rival, Smith started in the fourth position. As the green flag fell. Pilon led the charge followed by Sandt, Mike Keirstead, Brett Osborn, and Smith respectively. After ten laps, Osborn, knowing Smith had the faster car, let the championship leader by and settled into cruise control in fifth place. [...]
Win Big in the iRacing.com Daytona 500
by David Phillips on February 22nd, 2012
Want to get a jump on “Smoke,” Carl, Dale Jr., JJ & Co in 2012? And get a crack at a new gaming computer, NASCAR Superstore cards and a subscription to iRacing.com in the bargain? Here’s your big chance. “How big” you might ask? Round 3 of the iRacing.com World Tour — aka the iRacing.com Daytona 500 — is so big we’re running it on Thursday, February 23 AND Saturday, February 25. Each day’s online racing action will be split into two classes. Thursday’s Oval Rookie and D License race starts at 7:30 PM EST (00:30 GMT Friday) with the green flag waving on the Oval C – Pro License race at 8:30 PM EST (01:30 GMT Friday). Similarly, Saturday’s racing starts at 5:00 PM EST (23:00 GMT) with the [...]
iRacer Profile: Bill Brown
by David Phillips on July 2nd, 2011
For a self-described “old, broke, washed-up, wanna-be racer,” Bill Brown isn’t doing too badly. The 30-something Floridian holds-down top ten positions in Division One of both the iRacing.com Street Stock and SK Modified Series and, at the time of this writing, stands P15 in the NASCAR iRacing.com Late Model Series, again in Division One. And while he’s not an imminent threat to knock Klaus Kivekäs, Hugo Luis, Greger Huttu and Jesse Nieminen from top spots in the iRacing World Championship Series Road Racing, the Panama City resident did collect a Mazda MX5 win at Lime Rock last season and recently followed that up with a fifth place finish in an NVIDIA Cup race at Okayama International Circuit. All this, as Brown notes in his profile, for less than he used [...]
iRacer Profile – Joshua Laughton
by David Phillips on May 28th, 2011
If you tend to think of the name “Tyler D Hudson” when you read the name “Joshua Laughton” there’s a reason. The twosome battled for the NASCAR iRacing.com Class C Series title in two of the past three seasons. And don’t look now, but Hudson and Laughton are a familiar one-two in the NASCAR Class C 2011 Season 2 standings. A little too familiar for Laughton for, as it was in 2010 Season 3 and 2011 Season 1, Hudson is out front. Fierce as their rivalry may be, however, Laughton counts Hudson as a “great friend.” But what else would you expect from a sim racer who says he was motivated to become an iRacing member by the opportunity to competing with online racing’s top talents in the NASCAR iRacing.com [...]
A Wise Voice for iRacing
by David Phillips on March 10th, 2011
NASCAR Nationwide Series driver Josh Wise is the latest pro racer to tout the benefits of iRacing.com, both for the fun factor and as a serious tool for helping him improve his “game.” The youngest champion in USAC history, Wise caught the eye of another USAC champion – Tony Stewart – who helped him break into stock car racing in ARCA and, later, NASCAR where he drove in the Camping World Truck and Nationwide Series for Michael Waltrip Racing, Fitz Motorsports and Darrell Waltrip Motorsports. The California-native joined JR Motorsports this season and will split time with Danica Patrick in the #7 Chevrolet in Nationwide Series competition. See what Josh has to say about iRacing (and a few other things) here: http://www.jrmracing.com/news/2011/03/09/get-to-know-josh-wise While you’re at it, check-out an impressive JR [...]
