Analysis: why team orders should stay
March 26th, 2013
Red Bull’s ‘multi 21′ controversy with Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber in Malaysia has prompted fresh calls to ban team orders in Formula 1, but doing so would simply create more problems than it solves. The manner in which the Red Bull and Mercedes drivers were ordered to hold position at Sepang may be an annoyance to some fans who wanted to see a race to the flag, but a team orders ban would not have improved the situation. Red Bull and Mercedes were motivated to go into a formation pattern because of concerns about tyres, and in the latter case fuel as well.

March 25th, 2013
The Prototype Technology Group team that masterminded BMW’s sportscar successes with the M3 in North America in the 1990s and 2000s is closing its doors. Tom Milner’s Virginia-based PTG squad was appointed by BMW North America to mastermind its entry into the IMSA series with the E36-shape M3 in 1995. The partnership yielded titles in IMSA, the United States Road Racing Club championship, the American Le Mans Series and Grand-Am across 11 seasons and two generations of M3
Williams: Maldonado has learned lessons
March 11th, 2013
Pastor Maldonado was a new man in the final Formula 1 races of 2012 and can put his wild reputation behind him, reckons Williams technical chief Mike Coughlan. Although Maldonado became a grand prix winner with his triumph in Spain last year , he was also involved in a string of incidents during the season, picking up a number of grid penalties for driving misdemeanours.

Massa resurgence ‘won’t shake Alonso’
January 16th, 2013
Ferrari has no concerns that Felipe Massa’s resurgent form in Formula 1 will create tension with Fernando Alonso. The Brazilian driver bounced back from a difficult start to 2012 to end the campaign as one of the highest-scoring drivers, and even outqualified Alonso at a few races.

Lewis Hamilton: 2012 in quotes
December 28th, 2012
Despite finishing only fourth in the Formula 1 drivers’ championship, Lewis Hamilton was one of the biggest stories of the 2012 season. The ‘will he/won’t he’ McLaren contract wrangle filled plenty of news outlets until his Mercedes deal was announced. But aside from all that, Hamilton drove superbly through much of the year and, without points lost to unreliability and early-season pitstop blunders, would surely have been in the title hunt
F1 needs ‘more modern’ management
December 21st, 2012
Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has suggested that the time has come for new younger management to take over the running of Formula 1.
Daly: US more feasible than Europe
December 14th, 2012
Conor Daly says the financial demands of racing in Europe mean he is likely to focus on finding a seat in the United States for next year. The American made his IndyCar debut with Foyt Racing at the Sebring circuit earlier this week as the team evaluates him for a possible seat for 2013
Austin seeks new date for 2013 race
December 6th, 2012
United States Grand Prix organisers want the date of the 2013 event at the Austin circuit changed in order to avoid a clash with an American football match. The Circuit of the Americas race is scheduled for the weekend of November 17 next year following confirmation of the schedule by the FIA World Motor Sport Council yesterday.

November 23rd, 2012
The FIA is committed to providing two DRS zones at as many tracks as possible next year to ensure that rule changes do not result in a reduction in overtaking. The governing body announced at the United States Grand Prix that for next year drivers will only be able to activate DRS in practice and qualifying in the designated overtaking zones used in the race.
Renault mandates new alternator
November 22nd, 2012
Renault has switched all its Formula 1 teams onto its newest specification alternators for this weekend’s Brazilian Grand Prix, following Mark Webber’s failure in the United States . With post-race analysis of Webber’s broken alternator from last weekend showing a repeat of the problem that put Sebastian Vettel out of the European and Italian Grands Prix, Renault believes the safest solution is to make partner teams Red Bull, Lotus, Williams and Caterham all use the latest version
Lotus simulator now up and running
November 22nd, 2012
Lotus’s hopes of making further progress on track next season have been boosted with its new simulator now fully up and running. After months of development, Romain Grosjean was the first of its race drivers to try out the new simulator in Enstone ahead of the United States Grand Prix. The Frenchman said that there was still more calibration work to do before the team could be satisfied it was ready but, by the start of next season, the outfit should be on a good development path with it.
F1 ‘must capitalise’ on Austin impetus
November 21st, 2012
Austin circuit boss Bobby Epstein has urged Formula 1 not to let the impetus of a successful United States Grand Prix go to waste if it wants to make a breakthrough in America. With the sport revelling after a sell-out crowd was treated to a thrilling race at the new Austin track , Epstein is convinced that next year’s event can be even better if the sport makes an effort to build on what has been created
Hamilton chasing ‘perfect farewell’
November 21st, 2012
Lewis Hamilton is determined to try to end his spell at McLaren on a high and has set his sights on winning the season finale in Brazil. The British driver will leave the Woking-based team at the end of the year to join rival Mercedes , putting an end to a relationship that started when he was competing in karting. Hamilton won last weekend’s United States Grand Prix at Austin and admits he wants to finish the 2012 season on top once again on what will be an emotional weekend for him
McLaren ‘squandered title chance’
November 20th, 2012
McLaren boss Martin Whitmarsh believes that Lewis Hamilton would be fighting for the Formula 1 world championship in Brazil this weekend if the team had got the most out of its car this year. A spate of early-season errors and more recent reliability failures derailed Hamilton’s campaign and left him unable to threaten Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso for the title. Whitmarsh thinks the pace of the McLaren in America, where Hamilton hunted down and defeated Vettel , shows the potential the team had this year
Ferrari ‘must focus on itself in finale’
November 20th, 2012
Ferrari’s only focus in Brazil will be on doing the best job it can, without thinking of worst-case scenarios for Sebastian Vettel, says team boss Stefano Domenicali. Red Bull driver Vettel goes into this weekend’s finale with a 13-point advantage over Fernando Alonso after they finished second and third in the United States Grand Prix on Sunday. The Spaniard would be champion if he wins the race and Vettel finishes outside the top four, if he is second and Vettel is outside the top seven, or if Alonso is third and Vettel finishes 10th or lower.
Red Bull vows to attack in Brazil
November 20th, 2012
Red Bull has vowed to attack in the final race of the season even though the world championship is now at stake. Sebastian Vettel’s runner-up position in the United States Grand Prix was enough to clinch Red Bull the constructors’ championship and extend the German’s advantage over Fernando Alonso in the drivers’ standings to 13 points. That gap means Vettel needs to only finish fourth in Brazil to guarantee the championship
