Jorge Lorenzo blamed the poor handling of his Yamaha for his disappointing ride to seventh in Sunday’s MotoGP race at Le Mans. The defending champion ran third early on behind Andrea Dovizioso and race winner Dani Pedrosa but dropped back substantially as the race progressed. The Spaniard, who is now 17 points behind his compatriot Pedrosa’s Honda in the championship, said he was struggling everywhere on the circuit and he would have crashed if he had pushed any harder

Marquez takes second MotoGP pole

Marc Marquez claimed his second MotoGP pole in four starts as he converted his practice pace to the qualifying top spot at Le Mans. Riding his spare Honda after crashing at the chicane late in the pre-qualifying practice session, Marquez put in an 1m33.187s in Q2 to take provisional pole. Jorge Lorenzo trailed that by 0.2 seconds at first, before closing to within 0.030s with his penultimate lap.

Dani Pedrosa hung on at the top of the times in opening MotoGP practice at Le Mans despite a strong late challenge from Jorge Lorenzo. Pedrosa’s Honda had led the way for most of the morning, getting down to rapid flying laps quicker than anyone else and building an early cushion over the field.

Cal Crutchlow has questioned the wisdom of Yamaha’s negotiations with Pol Espargaro that could cost the Briton his Tech 3 ride at the end of 2013. The 27-year-old Briton confirmed he is aware of Yamaha’s plans to sign Espargaro, runner-up to Marc Marquez in last year’s Moto2 championship, to a factory contract. Works riders Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi, and Tech 3 team-mate Bradley Smith, all have contracts with the Japanese manufacturer, but Crutchlow only has a one-year deal

Cal Crutchlow was fastest in the third MotoGP practice session for the Spanish Grand Prix. Crutchlow set the quickest time of the weekend so far – his best lap a 1m38.975s – to become the first driver to dip below the 1m39s mark. His satellite Tech 3 Yamaha, which had experienced a front-brake problem earlier in the session, edged out Dani Pedrosa’s Honda by less than two hundredths of a second.
